when it has extra marital affairs and murder??

Let me be honest her. I have watched only first part/half of the movie. So I don't know what happens in the end.

But that extra marital affair and murder at the beginning didn't seem to be kiddish.

It's being considered as Kid's movie because adults (including audience and critics) failed to understand it 😆 . Plus, it would be a good excuse to cover up its failure.

The Jungle Book is kids' movie and yet everyone went to watch it.

Cause Basu said so. He said that when he came out of Barfi he found out his daughter did not like it much. So he set out to do his version of a kids movie. It plays tribute to a lot of Satyajit Ray kids movies AFAIK, a series called Gopi Gyne something something as per what I read on the board. I have no clue about what that is.
As for dark themes. Hansel and Gretel a "fairy" tale bakes children in the oven. Modern tales for kids like Harry Potter have dark themes.

Even the infamous Wizard of Oz which I compare JJ to 😛 has two witches being killed, separation from home. Point, children's tales always have sad themes. JJ is no different. But it is a bright, colorful, kid friendly movie too.

Its a movie for older kids, young adults to be precise.

Its a detective story slash fantasy adventure told in a musical style

Detective stories will have murders of course, and also intrigue and dark secrets. Nothing shocking abt that.
Regular Hindi movies which kids watch have much worse adult themes and adult songs/dances
This is a clean, beautiful film which is very suitable for older kids and adults
The kids in my theater were enjoying the movie, especially the parts with animals and hectic chases

The film is mainly Shruti telling the story to the kids
The animation graphics and the CGI made animals appealed to the kids
The adventures and the mystery was also for the kids
But yes the film was not solely for the kids

Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne was a kids book written by Satyajit Ray's grandfather Upendra Kishore Roychowdhury.
Ray made a famous movie version of the story in 1969, it was a black and white film, a musical where the 2 main characters Goopy and Bagha sing to impress kings and janta alike and they also have musical conversations
GGBB was followed by 2 other sequels with the same 2 friends as protagonists
Hirak Rajar Deshey (in the land of the Diamond King) and Goopy Bagha Phirey Elo (the Return of Goopy Bagha)

Movie link: very old print with patchy subtitles

JJ is inspired from this movie in many ways, the musical genre, the name Shundi taken from a kingdom's name in the movie, and the last scene of chocolates dropping from the sky is taken from end part of GGBB where pots of rasgullas fall from the sky and the hungry soldiers of the evil king jump on the rasgullas

Ues there were, if I am right, 3 murders in first half.
Also the way Mala miss and that wife were arguing "mera hi pati mila tha tujhe" and all that was definitely for kids.

You may say teenagers' but definitely not appropriate for kids. I would not want my kids to watch anything related to extra marital affair no matter how casul things have become.

The extra-marital stuff will go right over kids' heads. Murder is common plot point in many children's books and movies. As long as they are not gory or graphic, it's fine.
