Tch... that's unfair!!!

yes, this monopoly should be brought down. There should be equal and fixed screenings of all movies. If the movie is so well liked, it will run for longer days!

they are even able to manage monopoly during holiday release when everyone want to release their movie because its easy money. equal share and competition will be healthy for bollywood.

See, All the big superstars like the Khans get a wide release for their movies because they have that crowd pulling ability. Distributors have a trust in them, that even if the movie is bad, the opening weekend collections which mostly depends on the star power of the actor will be sufficient for the recovery.
Khans movies get maximum number of screens because they bring maximum profit to the distributors. It's purely business.

This is something which the smaller stars don't have. A Shahid Kapoor movie can't open on record breaking numbers even after releasing on 4000+ screens, because he doesn't has that stardom or box office pull.

Though Number of screens are sometimes increased after a movie grows on WOM, but still star power matters alot in today's times.

No one is stopping a B-List actor to release his movie on a holiday. Everyone wants a holiday release for their movies, but the reason all the A-Listers end up getting a solo-holiday release is because:

1. The movie of the B-Lister will not get enough screens because of the clash. Distributors will give more number of screens to the superstar's movie because he'll bring more profit to them.

2. Clashes are never good for a movie even on a holiday because it divides the audience. So it's always better for one movie to shift it's release date and most of the time it's the weaker film which has to move. Even SRK had to move Raees from Eid because Salman's movie was bigger than his. So it's not only the case with B-Listers.

9tanki - As far as I know, JJ producers didn't want to release the movie in lots of screens, it was their strategy to do a limited release as it isn't a Single Screen audience movie.
If it is a clash of big stars, politics come into play.

it's purely taken on what's good for business

Yes I hinted that in my last line
Popularity / buzz of the actor / actress is taken into account too
For example a Shahid Kapoor film may not get as many screens as a Varun Dhawan film
PS I just gave an example

Avataar screens will be reduced and will go to Kartik's film but seems like Dhurandhar will keep atleast 50% screens even in its 4th weekend...
