Have you spotted these Harry Potter and Tintin references in Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif's Jagga Jasoos?
Jagga Jasoos is finally out and it is getting some very extreme reactions from the audience. While some of the viewers have loved the scope and Ranbir's performance in the movie, there are others who are not impressed with the musical genre of the movie. There were people in the theatre who were getting annoyed as to why Ranbir keeps on singing in every second scene, despite that's the only way he can communicate in the movie because his character has a stammering issue. The movie has got only around 20 per cent occupancy from Friday morning shows, and this could look like one of Ranbir and Katrina's biggest disasters at the box office." data-reactid="25">Jagga Jasoos is finally out and it is getting some very extreme reactions from the audience. But let's not discuss the box office performance of a movie here. Instead, let's talk about how Anurag Basu has again used enough Hollywood references to make his next movie. As you know, the director has never shied away from seeking inspiration from Hollywood films. His debut movie, Kucch Toh Hai, was a rip-off of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Then Saaya that came next was a remake of The Mothman Prophecies. Murder, as you know, was lifted off from Unfaithful. While he has done original movies that got him a lot of appreciation like Life in a Metro, Gangster and Barfi!, there are still Hollywood references in them. Like how Sharman Joshi's entire track in Life in A Metro was lifted off from Jack Lemmon's classic An Apartment. Or Barfi! has references from various Charlie Chaplin movies to The Notebook to Gene Kelly's Singing In The Rain. Now in Jagga Jasoos, too, you can pick up enough Hollywood references, especially if you are a Tintin and Harry Potter fans.
The Adventures of Tintin
The trailer has already given us the Tintin feel, especially with how Jagga Jasoos had styled his hair that makes him look somewhat like Tintin. Plus, there are enough cross-country chases in Jagga Jasoos that hark back to the Tintin comics as well as the Steven Spielberg animated movie. There is also a character in Jagga Jasoos (not revealing for spoilers) who acts like Captain Haddock from Tintin, a drunk, irresponsible but kind-hearted man. The only thing that's missing is the dog.
Harry Potter
What the trailer never told us is that Anurag Basu has also taken enough references from Harry Potter movies. Like Ranbir Kapoor's character, as a child, is seen staying under the staircase of his orphanage, like how Harry Potter used to stay in the broom closet under the stairs of the Dursleys in the first movie. His spectacles are also similar to what Potter wears. Moreover, he even rides his cycle like Potter rides his broom.
Young Sherlock Holmes
Jagga fancies himself as a detective in the movie, even though he is just a teen, which reminded me of this underrated '80s movie that centres around a teenage Sherlock Holmes. Katrina's character, meanwhile, looked like a combination of the young Watson and Holmes' love interest Elizabeth Ward in the same movie.
The Hateful Eight
No, don't worry! Jagga Jasoos is nowhere nearly as dark and violent as this Quentin Tarantino movie. But Jagga Jasoos' use of chapters, including numbers, is something we can take inference from The Hateful Eight.
Have you seen Jagga Jasoos? Do you think we have missed any more Hollywood references?
