I haven't watched DJ but know that it is a typical masala action-comedy telugu movie.

Telugu audience is very different.. Telugu audience who may reject even Sultan may still go to watch a movie like DJ(which is not any better than any hindi masala movie). Telugu audience looks for different things - and no one will be able to crack the code of the relationship between Telugu movies and audience. I also enjoy few telugu masala comedies -- it'a a different feeling that I cannot explain :) ..while, I rarely watch Hindi masala movies, and, do not feel same way about hindi masala movies.

What I want to say is, comparing the success of regional movies is pointless, because I feel the relationship between regional movie and the regional audience is different.. For example, I personally love the language or dialogues in comedy telugu movies, and it is the same for all telugu audience, we love comedy, most of the top-most telugu hits are strong in comedy or dialogues.. we love good dialogues.. even if everything in the movie may be OTT.
