Just some observations and thoughts
Since the past decade i have been noticing that in most interviews when a film industry celeb is asked about his favourite movie he/she watched recently or his favourite show on Tv, the answers are always about some critically acclaimed hollywood movie or some popular Tv shows like two and half men, homeland etc etc
Especially saif ali khan, emraan hashmi leads that brigade who say we dont watch hindi movies or hindi TV.
Not just saif but almost 80% bollywood actors and actresses name hollywood films as their favourite last watched movie or US TV shows as their favourite ones.
Even the small time actors of 90's who came from hindi heartland like bihar and UP who were not exposed to HBO and AXN during their times also brag about loving hollywood films. 😆
This mania is prevalent now in TV celebs too. Recently a self glorified, vanity filled TV actor whose interviews were doing the round on various websites about his show had something similar. So whenever the discussion went to fav Tv shows or films. the answer was always in hollywood and US tv industry programmes. I mean why this show off and sham?
MY TAKE:
Even we all cinema lovers from India do know that Yes Hollywood and world cinema are something superb to view, to cherish, and feel paisa vasool .Their Vfx, state of art technolgy is more advanced than us. We love watching their romedies too. We appreciate that there is no fuss about intimate scenes in west. Even in indian mass communication and other film schools the students of film studies are not shown Indian films at first instance but a great movie like Bicycle thief, wild strawberries, battleship potempkin. So in nutshell if not all , most of the Hollywood and world cinema is great, Agreed we watch them.
But an Indian average cinema lover also grows up on amitabh bachhan , SRK, AAmir movies.
Whenever a discussion of movies happens among friends about their movie outings or about bollywood gossips, or fav films, DDLJ, Hum aapke hain Kaun , sholay , lagaan, 3 idiots, Black etc etc are mentioned.
Mind it... its a very significant population. Even i watch hollywood... but when it comes to preference somehow love for bollywood overcomes everything. For a section of most Indian fans DDLJ or Kuch Kuch hota Hai is more favourite than Titanic.
Why is it that most of the average indian audience would stick to be huge fan of bollywood stars and go gaga around bollywood films. Even ZEE cinema showing jaani dushman and Sony Max showing sooryavansham are always talking point for indian cinema lovers. That shows how in indian cinegoer dna , our industry is deeply rooted.
And whereas the stars we adore behave as if indian films are the last thing to watch on planet.
Why cant actors in the fraternity praise movies like - Hum aapke hain kaun, Kal ho naa Ho , etc etc ? when asked about their list of fav ones. I dont think the Indian film and Tv stars are made up some different blood cells. There are some common ethos. where have they gone missing?
Most irritating as i told the arrogant tv celebs dont pay heed to Indian shows...but watch homeland and master chef australia and can name a dozens of US TV shows. Sometimes to play safe they name old fashioned DD era shows. i mean why this hypocrisy? Is it a shame to say Yes i watched Amanat , Koshish ek aasha , kyunki saas bhi, left right left?
Actually earlier it used to be just film celebs but now the TV tantrum kings have joined the bandwagaon. Dangal was a great movie and also featured sakshi tanwar but in Tv celeb interviews no one has praise for it but rather they praise some korean stuff.
MY SUGGESTION to those celebs
Dont be too flashy about your western choices. You never know when the indian audiences start taking your likes seriously and dump watching your new shows/films and switch to hollywood content or US TV permanently. Keep worshipping US TV, homeland and masterchef australia while your own show will also be overlooked following your footsteps;
If you want your work to be valued start appreciating and valuing the work of your own industry . In interviews dont just name random hollywood or US TV shows as favs for name sake. By Saying that Sultan, Dangal or bahubali 2 was your last watched movie wont hang you in shame. Let the viewers also know that you too follow Bollywood and Indian TV industry.
