Chapter-1 Maayi ni Maayi
Maayi ni maayi munder pe teri,
Bol raha hai Kaaga,
Jogan ho gayi teri dulaari,
Mann jogi sang laaga...
"Ring-Ring..." Sonakshi's phone was ringing. After many years she was getting dressed in a Salwaar Kameez, when her phone began ringing.
"Dev" the screen flashing on her phone said. Leaving her dangling
earring in her one ear, without putting a stopper to it, Sonakshi picked the call, putting it on the other ear.
"Haan Dev, bolo..." Sonakshi's nervous voice was heard. What amused Dev was something he didn't say, instead laughed in his own peculiar manner.
"Dev, did I crack a joke?", Sonakshi wasn't amused.
"No, you didn't crack a joke, Sonakshi. But, this is funny. I mean, you are getting so nervous as if this is the first time you are getting married and people are coming to see you for the first time for an arranged marriage. For Heaven's sake, it's just maa, Maamaji, Elena and the kids... Even Maamiji is not coming. What are you nervous about? They won't eat you up." Dev laughed.
"Dev, tum nahi samjhoge..." Sonakshi shook her head negatively.
"Mujhe lagta hai, we should stop using this phrase. There's nothing between us that if we try and we won't understand. So, I am trying, you tell me, what is wrong." Dev explained.
"Dev, I am not nervous because of your maa, I am worried because of my baba..." she parted the information. What she heard next was a roar of laughter.
"Dev, tum phir hansne lage?" she felt annoyed.
"Sonakshi, it's just the turn of events that I am laughing at. Earlier it used to be my mother that seemed the topic of worry, and now it's the other way around that it is your baba... Another reason I couldn't help laughing is that you have started to agree with me about my opinions about your baba." Dev laughed again amusedly.
"Shut up! Dev, he is going to be your father-in-law again. At least now show him some respect." Though Sonakshi admonished Dev, but she slowly was getting amused along with Dev. What made her smile fully was when she heard him humming next- "Suno sasurji, ab zidd chodo, maan lo meri baat... Dulhan toh jaayegi dulhe raja ke saath..." and he bursted into laughter, joined by Sonakshi,
who giggled along.
"Dev, hum kitne mean hain na... Mere hi baba ka mazaak udaa rahe hain... Very bad!" Sonakshi laughed.
"Ab aise hi wo saara time gussa hote rahenge toh hum aur kya sochein? Ye nahi ke khushi khushi wo tumhara Kanyadan karein. Par nahi, Mr. Bose thehre tumhare baba, zidd karna unki favourite hobby hai." Dev told.
"Abitna bhi rude hone ki zaroorat nahi hai, okay, Mr. Aubhodro? Sonakshi admonished.
"Achha tohphir bataao, main kya karoon jisse tumhari nervousness door ho jaaye?" he asked earnestly.
"Pehle ye bataao, tumne call kyu kiya?" Sonakshi asked.
"Tumse baat karne ke liye." He told romantically.
Chand ki tarah chamak rahi thi,
Uss jogi ki kaaya,
Mere dwaare aakar usne pyaar ka alak jagaaya,
Apne tann pe bhasm ramaa ke,
Saari rain wo jaaga,
Jogan ho gayi teri dulaari,
Mann jogi sang laaga...
Sonakshi could still distinctly remember the night of Dev's engagement with Nisha. She couldn't see him getting engaged for life with anyone else, but feared her own union with him, thus couldn't say a yes after facing a tragic separation 8 years ago...Walking out of his engagement that instant was her reflexive action as she walked down the streets of the late-night road to her home... Her mind was so much clouded with Jealousy, insecurity of losing Dev, and unexpressed love for him; she didn't even think of calling her car or cab to her home, but walking on empty roads, getting drenched in rain.
She came to her senses when she realized a familiar touch on her arm, that held her, and was turned around.
"Tum sagaai se aise akele kyu chali aayi?" it was Dev was drenched himself walking behind her.
"Dev, tum... Tumyahan kyu aaye? Tumhari engagement hai. Nisha tumhara wait kar rahi hogi." Sonakshi's red eyes urged him to return to his world, making sure that her tears mixed well with the raindrops.
"Maine tumse kaha tha na Sonakshi, tum mera pal pal saath dogi mere aakhri phere tak. Agar tumne apna promise toda toh main ye sagaai tod dunga!" His hold on her arms were pulling her back.
"Chodho mujhe!" Sonakshi was struggling to get out of his hold.
"Tum wapas kyu aa gayi?" Dev was pulling at her.
"CHODHO MUJHE!!! Nahin dekh sakti main tumhe kisi aur ka hote hue!" she yelled at the top of her lungs.
Dev wanted to smile at his victory, but he wanted to listen to her, fully!
"Nahi dekh sakti main kisi aur ke naam ke saath Mrs. Dev Dixit ka tag lagaate hue. Tum idhar udhar ki ladkiyon se fling karte phirte they, Shruti types; it never worried me... Because I knew, it's not up to you to get serious with anyone after me... Par tum toh sagaai karne chale they... Meri sautan laane chale they Dev!" Sonakshi hit his chest.
"Sautan? We aren't in a wedlock anymore Sonakshi." Dev had a little smile.
"So, does that change the fact that you love me, and I cannot move on from the fact that I could never love any other man after you?" she had a fresh lot of tears mixing with the rain water.
"So, is that so? You still love me?" Dev asked.
"No, I don't love you! Because you are an idiot... I said the same thing na? That I couldn't love any other man after you. It means you were my one and only. Iska aur kya matlab hota hai?" she felt annoyed.
"Pehle kyu nahi bola?" Dev demanded.
"Because I can't come with you Dev. I cannot again become the DixitBahu. I cannot handle all of that anymore. I feel scared." She told.
He was walking her towards the bus stop bench that could put them under a shade- "Did maa visit you this morning?" Dev made Sonakshi sit on the bench, while he sat on his hunches before her. He was referring to Ishwari's visit the morning where she asked her to think about coming back as the daughter in law of the house, as Dev's wife, on her own terms and conditions, on her own will and on her own happiness... All they wanted her to think of her feelings and acknowledge them if they existed, which they knew, they did.
"Dev, tumhe pata hai, auntyji isi tarah humari pichli shaadi se pehle bhi aayi thi... mujhse bheek maang rahi thi tumhari khushiyon ki, she was ready to do anything for your happiness... Did you see where we landed the last time?" Sonakshi had asked.
"I know Sonakshi, but, time changes... I am the same Dev who loves you immensely, you are the same Sona who loves me even more. Our love is the same, but we have matured, we have seen the world and relationships, we have tried learning from our mistakes. So- has maa... Trust me Sonakshi, I never told her to build good terms with you, like I asked her the last time... Iss baar na to maine maa ko force kiya aur na tumhe... Jo hua, sab ek natural process mein hua. Kya hum apne pehle pyaar ko second chance nahi de sakte? Iss baar toh humare paas Suhana bhi hai, jo har pal bas ek hi wish maangti hai ki uski family ek ho jaaye, uske mummy papa ek ho jaayein... Kya hum apne pyaar ko dubara start nahi kar sakte?" Dev asked her.
"Dev, hum agar Suhana ke liye wapas lautenge, toh na chaahke bhi
humein soha ke liye ek dusre ke saath rehna hi padega, no matter what." Sonakshi told.
"Sonakshi, na Suhana humari majboori hai, aur na humara pyaarmajboori hai... Dono humari mazbooti hain, humari taaqat, our strength. Suhana is our strongest bond to bind together, but the reason of our togetherness is love... Aur main tumse bohot bohot zyada pyaar karta hoon Sonakshi..." he told.
"But love is just not enough Dev. We need more... Love, trust,
understanding equality in family, acknowledgement...Bohot kuch..." Sonakshi wiped fresh tears from her cheeks.
"I won't promise words, I promise deeds Sonakshi. Maintumse kahunga nahi, karke dikhaaunga... Aur ye mera promise hai. Can you put forth a leap of faith? Kyuki iss baar agar main tumse separate hua, toh main marr jaaunga Sonakshi, and I want to live, with you, all my life. You think, you decide. Whenever and whatever your decision will be, I will respect that, I promise, and there's no hurry to answer." He stood up from his hunches. He turned about and said- "Chalo tumhe tumhare ghar chodh doon." He began moving.
"Dev..." Sonakshi held his wrist... He turned about to look at her. "Mera jawaab suney bina chale jaaoge?" she smiled finally with a twinkle- "Let's give our first love a second chance." She had said.
He couldn't help but break into a huge smile and take her into an instant hug that rattled every fiber into their beings... He didn't ask if she was sure, there wasn't any place for doubt anymore...
"Let's go and tell our families." He kept hugging as he proposed the idea.
"Aise? Bheege hue?" Sonakshi asked.
"Ab aur intezaar nahi hota... Mere ghar par koi toh kapde honge
tumhare. Chalo..." he pulled her wrist with him.
"Aur tumhari engagement?"she asked.
"Ab engagement rakhi hai toh karni toh padegi na?" Dev told cutely.
"Abhi bhi? Mere hote hue bhi Dev?" Sonakshi was hurting.
"Tumse nahi aur kisse engagement karunga, Miss. Bose?" he wriggled his eyebrows... She couldn't help but smile...

"Hello... Sonakshi? Kahan kho gayi? I said maine tumse baat karne ke liye call kiya hai..." Dev pulled Sonakshi out of her pleasant memories.
Sonakshi could hear the call bell of her house- "Dev, I think tumhari family aa gayi hai yahan... Hum raat mein baat karte hain... Bachhe abhi aa jaayenge bhaagte hue mere paas... Hum baat nahi kar paayenge anyway." She explained.
"Okay, Miss. Bose... As you say... Let me know kya baatein hui aap sab ki..." he told.
"Sure!" She assured. She walked down her room, where both the kids ran towards her to hug her.
Mannat maangi thi tuney,
Ek roz main jaaun bihaayi,
Uss jogi ke sang meri,
Tu ab karde kudh maayi,
Inn haathon mein laga de mehendi,
Baandh shagun ka dhaaga,
Jogan ho gayi teri dulaari,
Mann jogi sang laaga...
"Sagaai toh aap logo ne kar li jaise marzi hui, na mujhse consult kiya, na poocha... But main ye shaadi sirf ek hi condition pe hone dunga, ki saare functions aur rasmein, humare Bengali traditions ke hisaab se hi honge..." Bijoy Bose spoke haughtily as soon as the Dixits sat on the sofa with them.
"Bhaisahab humein koi..." Ishwari was about to complete, when Sonakshi interrupted.
"Ek minute, aunty ji, baba... Ek minute... Shaadi meri aur Dev ki hai, decide hum karenge... Hum dono ko hi koi behes nahi chahiye, ki isne ye nahi kiya, aur usne wo nahi kiya... Decision na aapka aur na aapka..." Sonakshi addressed the Dixits and the Boses. "Decision sirf mera, aur Dev ka hai.. Aur humara decision ye hai ki ab shaadi North Indian tareeqe se hogi... "
Bijoy looked affronted, as if he wanted to tell his daughter "Et tu Brute..." He quietly folded his arms in silent anger.
Sonakshi sat next to her baba and explained - "Baba, Jaise main aapki ek hi beti hoon, waise hi Dev bhi toh ek hi bete hain maa ke. Unka bhi toh mann hoga na, ki wo apne bete ki shaadi apne reeti-riwaaj se karwaayein? Last time har cheez aapki marzi se hua tha... iss baar unki marzi se kar lete hain? Please?" Sonakshi pleaded...
"Theek hai... jaisa tum chaaho..." Bijoy gave his consent quietly...
"Phir tayy raha Bijoy Da, iss baar aap humare reeti-riwaaj se dekhiye... Main waada karta hoon, aapko koi pareshaani nahi hogi..." Mamaji spoke earnestly, joining his palms...
Bijoy finally smiled by the other man's politeness, while his family joined him...
Ishwari gave out a relieved breath... Thanking the Almighty that Radha Rani and Vicky had to go to her mother's place at an emergency... And this really tricky meeting went well... It's her son's wedding with the most beloved girl she could find for him...
