Most people don't have a clue how to judge a director!

Having been on film sets has enabled me to understand.

95% of the time, they discuss the scene with the MAIN actors and "direct" them on how to perform it.

A film could be brilliant, due to the story/screenplay/characters, and people will say "____ is an AMAZING director".

It can be true that in a terrible film, the director has done a great job, but this won't be noticed by the general public.

For me, the answer is Gauri Shinde. She is MILES ahead of the rest. Zoya is a distant second.

Zoya & Gauri Shinde

I also like Reema Kagti but she has directed only 2 movies Honeymoon Travels & Talaash. Hope she directs more movies.

I also enjoyed Dil Dhadakne Do a lot more than Dear Zindagi. But I rate Gauri's work in DZ well above Zoya's work in DDD, although both are excellent.

For Gauri to get Alia to perform the way she did, that itself is the barometer to which we must judge a director's achievement. Zoya also did a fantastic job in DDD with Priyanka and Shefali.
