- PCL does not consider the symptoms which have only appeared in say, last one year because it is not supposed to be used for that. Grading is long term.
- Items should not be rated solely on the basis of individual's present state. The present state may be atypical of his/her usual functioning because of extreme situational factors, an exacerbation of acute psychopathology (e.g depression or psychosis ).
- PCL is not a yes/no checklist. It follows a scoring system. Scores are given on a scale of 0-2. 2 when the most of the features of a particular trait match. 1 when some features match but there are many exceptions as well and 0 when person does not have that trait in general or exhibits behaviour opposite to that trait.
- PCL-R test traditional cutoff is 30 out of 40. i.e >=30 psychopathic while <=29 non-psychopathic. Psychopathy is extreme case of ASPD that is why such high cutoffs.
- It is important to follow long term traits not impulsive reactions and utterances by people under extreme provocation when scoring. Psychopaths display these traits frequently without provocation. So it is important to put things in perspective. Some questions to ask if you want check empathy: does she care about her Mom? Is there stability in her relationship with her Mom? Whether she pushed Jhanvi or not off the building is something we don't know. But if we are to ignore this, we should infer she has a reasonably stable relationship with her Mom. She jumped into the lake to save her mother. She wants to stay with her mom, doesn't want to let her go. She cared about her. She has had emotional conversations with her Mom on numerous occasions. She has cried on seeing her Mom being tortured. Apart from this, she loves Arjun more than her life (whether you call it love or not is a different matter), this is impossible for a psychopath. A psychopath doesn't usually display sincere emotions. Quoting from official PCL-SV "Lack of remorse: Highs scores are given to those who appear to have no conscience whatsoever. Note that it is normal for people to feel justified on having hurt someone on a few occasions". Notice the extreme language used here for grading.
- Perspective on irresponsibility: "Quoting from official PCL-SV"Irresponsible: Consistently put others at risk. Unreliable as spouse. lack of commitment to relationships.Job performance inadequate. Untrustworthy of money, have been in trouble for paying late bills, loans etc.You see the signs of irresponsibility are long term not short term behaviour. And none applies to Maya except for instances of sometimes putting others to risk but on other fronts like job performance, lack of commitment etc she is totally opposite. She either receives a 0 or atmost (being harsh again) a 1 on this front.
- A thread posted checks 16 traits for Maya on PCL-R. Being totally harsh, I grant a 2 for Maya on those fronts. That results in a score of 32/40, only 2 above cutoff. This score is when a deliberate attempt to search for instances of such behaviour is made and grant her a 2 on those.
