Maya is quite a smarty pants but she's no match to Amy's astute brain. Amy will eat her alive. 😆 She actually staged murder, abduction & rape all by herself whereas Maya needed Samay. Amy is extremely charming giving no idea, whatsoever, to anyone what her little brain thinks of. Maya is much more emotional and totally foolish at times.

No.
Amy DID NOT have the perfect parents.
Her mother had several miscarried or still born babies. All named "hope" as far as I can recall.
The mother was so twisted she used to celebrate each and every dead kid's birthday with Amy telling how perfect they were, all while reprimanding Amy for her imperfections.
To her parent's she was just business. A way to make money.

Imagine the social pressure on Amy to live up to the "amazingness"?

Amy wasn't even affluent.
She worked as a writer who made quizzes for a magazine. She was laid off weeks after Nick. They had money problems.
Her parents too lost their business during recession. Hence she had to give up her trust fund for them.
She gave up all the remaining money she had to Nick to open the bar.
She might have been born with a silver spoon but her life wasn't perfect either.

Please get your facts cleared before speaking
Warm welcome.

Coming to Maya and Amy, They are way way way different.

The only few similarities is that Maya too has a sick guy trying to woo her with extreme stuff, like Amy had Desi.
Maya's childhood and till she met Arjun, were really really really awful, but that doesn't make Amy's life any good. They both had suffered, though on different levels.
Amy wasn't as insecure as Maya either. Maybe that's because Maya had to deal with way more shit than her.
Maya "loves" Arjun but Amy hates Nick and wants him to be slave to her. They both are controlling, yea.
Amy suffers not from psychopathy but from Borderline personality disorder and narcissim.
Whereas, we see Maya, who is suffering from psychosis, becuase of her delusions regarding Arjun (I feel she's healing and recovering from that because of her now being aware of Arjun's feelings towards her), Obsessive compulsive disorder, Major depressive disorder, psycho motor agitation, and plenty more.

People calling them a psychopath are very very very wrong on so many levels.

Ps: It's Amy "Dunne", not "Dune"

Interesting. I've not read GG but the childhood pressure being put on Amy viz., living up to the "amazingness" of the Amy from the books sounds like bollocks to me. Amy was a well-read Harvard grad if I'm not wrong. It's the NORM in every Asian/S.Asian household. Parents expect such high levels of competency and put abnormal amounts of pressure on the kids to perform well. Heard of Tiger Mom Amy Chua and tiger parenting? Most kids slip into depression in the long run but nobody goes on to wreak havoc like Amy does to Nick. She could have simply divorced the guy if he was cheating on her, what was the need to plan such an elaborate set up to trap him forever? Nah, she just behaved like an over-entitled brat suffering from an extreme case of narcissistic personality disorder rather than anything else in the movie.

I believe Amy is a psychopath. She definitely does not suffers from Borderline personality disorder. A person with BPD suffers from extreme mood swings and often has a track record of impulsive decisions. Their actions also have no consistency in them. Amy on the other hand, was cold, calculative and cunning. She was charming but lacked conscience. She was all the things which generally a person with BPD isn't.

I think someone who has more knowledge of these things will be able to throw more light on it. But as per my knowledge, Amy definitely isn't suffering from BPD

True.
She majored in psychology. Guess that must be out of her interest. there were a lot of things that might have drawn her to that, for example her ways of righting the wrongs. And it's not just about education. Amazing Amy was amazing in all ways, which a normal human can only try to be. And those books were immensely popular. A household name.
But remember the "best friend trying impersonate and replace Amy"? How Amy framed her and all?
That made me wonder about her living upto her amazingnss. She wanted to be perfect but she wasn't. And hence she eliminated the only person who knew she wasn't
I don't support her actions in any way but Nick was an awful guy too, Amy and him, both are f**ked. Amy's way more but Nick is a dickhead too.

And she does suffer from NPD. It's evident. She ain't normal. But certain things make a person mentally ill. Be it chemical, physical, social, physiological or whatever. So there might be a reason why Amy's like that. The way she was raised paved her way to narcissism. in most cases it is initiated by bad parenting. And Amy's parents were shit.

Amy has BPD along with Narcissism. That makes things a little different. Every case of a person suffering from an ailment is kind of different as the responses to the chemical imbalances are different. Imbalance of Serotonin and Dopamine can cause anxiety and depression as well as schizophrenia and other schizotypal disorders. Same way bilirubin formed by breakdown of RBC's may not cause Jaundice but cause Liver problems. Histamine can cause severe rhinitis as well as acidity.
She was impulsive too. Deciding to not kill herself like she had planned to, making friends when she was supposed to be dead and killing Desi despite knowing Nick "better than he knows himself"

Amy was called a mind f**king sociopath in the book. While I am no expert on psychology and stuff, I think she was definitely more of a socio/psychopath than a sufferer of personality disorder. She had one persona throughout her life - that of dominance- unless she pretended to be a cool girl. She clearly told she was pretending. Does an MPD patient can detect that?

I agree with Caput. Her parents had high expectations from her. They wanted her to pursue chello, tennis etc. They plagiarized her childhood through the amazing amy books but I really don't think that compelled her to be a menacing sociopath. They were passive aggressive but not at all cruel. Moreover she wanted her and Nick to be like her mom and dad. They were apparently a perfect 10/10 couple in her eyes. She was dangerous right from the childhood. She framed her high school bestie Hilary Handa for stalking & attacking and made sure she was on restraining order.

Oh btw, her mother celebrated all the 6 Hopes' birthdays but she never contended that they were perfect. It was Amy's perception. Amy thought they were perfect.

I never said she has MPD or multiple personality disorder.
Besides, if one acknowledges they ain't normal, that only means they are self aware.
Even a patient of MDD knows he's depressed after or in some case prior to diagnosis. And we must not forget Amy was a psychologist.
She was called a sociopath. By whom? Nick.
She's the one who's majored in psychology, not him. She's way more knowledge than him. He's just another guy. He actually knows nothing about her. So he called her a mind f**king sociopath because he thinks it is degratory.

I agree with the caput too.

Her parents may not be as bad as i think they are, but to her, they were awful. And I'm only seeing it from one side.
And that side makes it look like they too had a role in Amy's illness.
I'm not justifying her or saying that is not her fault.
I'm just trying to understand her.
Because the circumstances, no matter how much one denies it, frame the future too.
We are captivated by the situations thrown at us. It's undeniable.
Ps: sociopathy and psychopathy are personality disorders too.
