TSMSPJ episode 8: 11.4.17~ My Impressions~ The sphinx ..
In Egyptian mythology the sphinx is see as a composite creature with a lions body and the head of a man, or an animal..the Greek mythology portrays the sphinx as a winged creature who posed riddles. Those who failed to answer were strangled by the creature. Oedipus answered correctly and it killed itself. Generally a sphinx is someone regarded as mysterious or inscrutable. After watching the final part of yesterday's episode which flows into today's episode. Uma perplexed me immensely and I couldn't help myself recalling the man who performed the Surya obeisance. The staid, upright man who supported and witnessed the matrimonial rites of couples in Kerala. The Ayervedic medicine man bestowing healing ,unfortunately limited to male patients only. To me Uma follows the scriptures, and treats it as a beacon of light that guides his life. In previous episodes I find him balanced in mind ,body and soul. Great role model for his younger brother Shiv. Uma appears to me one who treats others with decorum. But in this episode his set face and frozen eyes makes me wonder.. Is he as he seems to be? Uma baffles me..
Seeing Ved the uniformed policeman drooling politely over Payal, freeing her chunni a symbol of her honor off a nail! certainly gets Uma's back up.There is history with this girl. She is his missing brother's wife. It's a matter of honor, and family respect which Uma refuses to put on the line before the public eye. He makes his presence known and escorts the girl to her parents home with a stiff proposition to bring forward the home coming of his brother Aditya's wife Payal.Uma encounters resistance from Payal's father that his daughter was married to his brother when they were children, and since no word from his brother has been heard since the last four years.. the marriage is annulled as of now. Payal's father is strong enough to stand up for his daughter by releasing her from this meaningless bond. He appeals to Uma's sense of identification in a similar scenario how would he react if his sister was in Payal's place? Uma is god-fearing and can understand predicament of taking his sister in law without any knowledge of her husband his Aditya. Truly Uma has no leg to stand. We see the complications of marriages solemnized in childhood. Things can change and usually the female ends up being victims of such practices. Although I feel, Uma treated Payal as a member of his household and he meant well in shielding her honor from wagging tongues when he sees her with Ved. The penny drops with Uma..the bottom line is Payal's parents will use their prerogative, he exits from their house.
Girls in hostels have homes to go to when the academic years end. Kanak too has a home in Pushkar, but does she have a family? Yes she has a family complete with brothers, uncle, aunt and cousin.Sealed with the sober presence of grandparents, showing a continuity of her family. Yet there is a vacuum in life. Her parents Suraj and Sandiya are not alive. But then, Kanak lives and so do her parents in the hearts of her family. For Kanak though, there is only one person whose heart she strives to conquer its..her bhabo, forbidding, distant , cold,on the outside no two ways about it. All can see the girl is not someone close to Bhabo's heart.. why naught knows? She is a bit of a riddle. Kanak hates darkness , she craves for light, the light of her Bhabo's love! so deprived she has been for years! Mind you what she cannot, get Kanak dreams about! Bhabo taking her shopping for her trousseau !even shows her how to wear a sari! As a child she clings to Bhabo fast asleep frightened .Its amusing to see how the granny tries to ward off the granddaughters clinginess! Either Kanak is obdurately positive and loves imagining today Bhabo will soften towards.Or its Bhabo on the other hand who loves to trample down the girl's eagerness of winning her attention. Hopes are dashed when Kanak is seen to hear Bhabo, command, Vansh to drop her at the avenue its Kanak's in laws that will help her shop!
Kanak loves and pays homage from afar.. uses her brothers to express her love to Bhabo in a roundabout way. The healing cup of tea made by Kanak for Bhabo to relieve her cold, served by her brother Vansh is poignant scene. Whether the proud Bhabo admits or not? but some strange healing makes way to her heart. The addition of pepper to tea by Kanak ,possibly churned up old memories. When Vansh tells her such cures can be found on Google search.. behind the spectacles her tired eyes light up with hope and her search slips out of her lips.. can google find Suraj and Sandhiya for her too? when Vansh gets blessed for making the special cold cure tea.. Kanak's heart swells with satisfaction as she looks hidden from a vantage point..
Meenakshi firebrand daughter in law.. sharp tongued ..boss of the other side of the partitioned house. But like a foster mother she is to Kanak . She actively tutors the girl to oppose Bhabo for pushing her into a forced marriage. Not because she disrespects her mother in law's unreasonable ways, but because Meenakshi loves Kanak like her own child. She actually wants to shield Kanak from heartbreak as Bhabo is unlikely to ever warm to her. She alerts her, Bhabo never took to her mother sandhya too in the beginning. But sandhya strove to become Bhabo's, daughter rather than daughter in law. But Kanak too is stubborn ..she too is her mother's daughter! Meenakshi recalls, but sandhya succeeded in winning Bhabo's love because she was backed by a husband like Suraj.. who was her strength.. Meenakshi looks searchingly at Kanak and says she fails to see any source of potency or light! some sun beams in her life..
Faraway in deep concentration and firm discipline before his brother Shiv and the sun god.. Uma offers his Surya worship..
