New Delhi: Vidya Balan-starrer Begum Jaan that releases this week is a remake of director Srijit Mukherji's own Bengali film Rajkahini (2015). Over the years, Bengal has provided much fodder for Hindi cinema. Here are 10 popular Bollywood flicks that were remakes of Bengali films.

1.Balika Badhu (1976): The Shakti Samanta film was based on a Bengali novel and remade from a Bengali film, both by the same name as the Hindi movie, revolving around a child couple who gradually fall in love. The romantic comedy starred Sachin and Rajni Sharma in lead roles.

2.Chupke Chupke (1975): Hrishikesh Mukherjee's classic comedy was a remake of Bengali film Chhadmabeshi. The film, starring Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan and Sharmila Tagore, netted Rs1 crore at the box office.

3.Kora Kagaz (1974): Director Anil Ganguly's drama starring Jaya Bhaduri in the lead role was a remake of the 1963 Bengali film Saat Pake Bandha, featuring Suchitra Sen. The Hindi film grossed a little over Rs1 lakh at the box office.

4.Bawarchi (1972): Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee's film, starring Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Bhaduri, was inspired by Bengali film Galpa Holeo Satyi (1966) by Tapan Sinha. It was later remade in Tamil as Samayalkaaran and twice in Kannada"first as Sakala Kala Vallabha starring Shashikumar and then as #73, Shaanthi Nivaasa with Sudeep.

5.Amar Prem (1971): The Shakti Samanta-directed film about a little boy ill-treated by his stepmother who is befriended by a neighbourhood prostitute was a remake of Bengali film Nishi Padma (1970). The Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore-starrer made Rs1.8 crore at the box office.

6.Mere Apne (1971): Gulzar's directorial debut was a remake of National Award-winning Bengali film Apanjan (1968). The Meena Kumari-starrer, which released a few months after the actor's death, earned Rs75 lakh in box office collections.

7.Khamoshi (1969): Director Asit Sen's black-and-white drama about a nurse who falls in love with her patient was remade from his own Bengali film Deep Jwele Jaai (1959). The film featuring Rajesh Khanna and Waheeda Rehman made Rs1.28 crore at the box office.

8.Majhli Didi (1967): The Hrishikesh Mukherjee-directed film was a remake of Bengali movie Mejdidi (1950). Based on a Bengali language story, the film starring Meena Kumari and Dharmendra was India's official entry to the Academy Awards that year.

9.Mamta (1966): Director Asit Sen's film featuring Suchitra Sen in a double role was a remake of his own National Award-winning Bengali film Uttar Falguni (1963), also starring Sen. The film dealing with middle class fears and conflict grossed Rs1.20 crore in box office collections.

10.Kabuliwala (1961): The film based on a Rabindranath Tagore story was earlier made as a Bengali film by the same name directed by Tapan Sinha. Featuring Balraj Sahni and Usha Kiran in lead roles, the film grossed Rs80 lakh in box office collections.

ALL such GREAT FILMS! Those were the golden days, when Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Shakti Samanta, Asit Sen, Gulzar, Tapan Sinha were making such good films, with social and emotional content and brilliant comedies/satires as well.
Great writers and best directors made these classics.

Uttam Kumar was brilliant in the originals Nishi Padma and Chhadmabeshi, so was Robi Ghosh in Golpo Holeyo Shotti.
Rajesh Khanna tried his best to emulate Uttam and succeeded to some extent though he couldnt avoid his usual mannerisms, it was said he watched Nishi Padma dozens of times to get inspired by UK's acting.

Original Balika Badhu had a teenaged Moushumi as the child bride, she was so cute in it.

Both Khamoshi and its original Deep Jele Jai had some beautiful songs, music by Hemanta and best songs sung by him and Lata.

Suchitra Sen and Soumitra were amazing in Saat Pakey Bandha...Jaya and Vijay Anand could not match their level of acting in Kora Kagaz.

Devdas has been made many many times over the years.

The very first Devdas was a silent movie made in 1928 by Naresh Mitra

The first speaking Devdas was Pramathesh Barua in 1935. his wife Jamuna Barua played Paro

Next Bimal Roy made Devdas in 1955 with Dilip Kumar as Devdas, alongwith Suchitra Sen as Paro and Vyajayanthimala as Chandramukhi

Devdas was made 2 more times in Bengali with Soumitra Chatterjee and Prasenjit in the titular role respectively in 1979 and 2002

And of course SLB's Devdas with SRK, Ash and Madhuri in 2002

There have also been Telegu, Assamese, Urdu and Bangladeshi film versions of this famous novel by Saratchandra Chatterjee.

Heard great thing about Bimal Roy's Devdas(1955)

Was it faithful to the book, atleast managed to capture the essence unlike the epic captured on celluloid by SLB?

I think work of Bengali authors has been made into movies, more than any other Indian language
except maybe some Hindi stories like Munshi Premchand's...

I know 'Rajniganda' ( very cute movie) was based on a Marathi short story

Rajnigandha was a cute movie with lovely songs.
Chhoti Si Baat with same cast of Amol Palekar and Vidya Sinha was a hilarious movie by Basu Chatterjee, its a gem!
I love Premchand's short stories, my favorite in school days. But which of his stories have been made into films? Im not aware of too many film versions of his stories.

Yes, Bengali authors like Saratchandra, Bankimchandra, Tagore, their novels have been made into films multiple times in many languages.

Bimal Roy's Devdas captured the ego and eccentricity of title character better I think.
SLB as usual concentrated more on set decor, costumes, lavish sets, chandeliers etc
But I think SRK managed to nail the egoistic eccentric characterization quite well.

Devdas was also made in 1936 with K.L. Saigal. Paro was Jamuna Barua and Chadramukhi was Rajkumari. The songs of this movie are amazing and it is very period appropriate. I think the best Devdas from Bollywood with 0 histrionics.

Oh yes, I forgot abt Saigal's Devdas, I had watched it a long time ago
Jamuna Barua was really not very good looking as Paro 😆
I liked Saigal as an actor

Watch K.N.Saigal's Devdas if you get a chance. It was considered to be best Devdas from Bollywood. This one captured essence of book.

Suchitra Sen was easily the best thing about Bimal Roy's movie. Couldn't stand the other two. You might like it though.

Gulshan Nanda's work was also used a lot. Olden Bollywood used works of Urdu writers.

She played Paro in all 3 language version. I am still not sure why Devdas drank after getting rid of that Paro. 😆
