@sabyata watch South Indian movies in Malayalam or Tamil of late 80s, 90s, you will really see strong female characters. Even the Hindi shows of 90s had strong female characters. By strength I dont mean the obsessive perception of strength of a character like Maya, but really strong women who takes decisions.
Indira of Panchagni has no remorse for killing. She murders and walk to jail because a marriage or love cannot force her to turn her eye towards the injustice happening in front of her.
Ganga of perumazakalam signs petition of mercy for the man who killed her husband, unmindful of the social ostatraceization because she thinks that is the right step.
Priyamvada of Kasturiman runs a home with her income, studying, fighting her good for nothing brother in law and it is the fight that she makes, make Sajan fall for her and his wait for her to come after the jail also stems from that selfless love. He knew why she had to murder.
Samsaram oru Minsaram Lakshmi tells she can no longer be part of joint family in the climax and decides to stay seperate. It is one of the most applauded movie winning National Award for Best Popular Film
Shymala of Chinthavisthaya Shymala who asks her husband to get lost when he comes back to her after going for some ashram leaving her and 2 kids. Again movie won National Award for Social Issues
Saira Bhanu of Bombay who asserts her identity as a Muslim when her husband tries to hide it telling her name as Bhanu
Yes they wives, mothers, sisters but they were women above all with independence
How much I remember Phir Wohi Talash a show of 90s where the leading lady Padma unties her mangalsutra, gives to her husband and go back to her lover telling she cannot live with her husband. And her husband he allows her. No acid thrown or any rubbish like that.
This door mat female character and alpha male thing started in hindi shows with Ekta Kapoor Kyunki Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi. This mahanta ki moorats are shown. Even Indian mythology doesnt give any doormat Miss Goody leading ladies. Sita refuses to go to Ayodhya back after her banishment. She questions the society and Ram before going back to earth. Panchali dares the entire Kurusabha with the question on dharma. No one could stop her when she takes help from Krishna. She doesnt sit and cry my husband decided it so I am abiding by it. I will be a slave. She asserts her power as queen. Rukmini runs away from the mandap with Krishna. Savithri fools Lord of death and gets Satyavan back. Durga kills mahishasura. And that battle is one of deception where the Goddess come as a beautiful bride and offers to marry Mahisashura if he can defeat her. And our shows give garbage leading ladies. It is a pity the Land of Rani Lakshmi Bai and Indira Gandhi shows their women so pathetic in TV shows.
Saanjh has not seen the fire and doesnt know what it means to be roasted in it. Maya has seen it, unfortunately in her effort to deal with it she is burning herself. At this point Saanjh and Maya cannot be compared. That is my moot point. When Saanjh faces the fire how she behaves is what we need to see. Only that behaviour will set her apart from Maya.
At this point I see her wanting to move on, not yet moved on. She has her feelings, but since in front of the world she has to be good that is what her parents have taught her she is doing certain things. Her sincerity is not 100%.
Now if someone ask me because Maya burned everyone should burn. Need not be. But if you have to make judgement on Maya you have to burn. You have to travel her path or understand her path completely before jumping to conclusions. I am not telling anyone who travels Maya's path will take her choices. But that is what you have to show. Under similar circumstance your choice is different. Till then Maya is bad, Saanjh is good is like comparing chalk and cheese.
