Friends, This is my new thread. Iam trying to reproduce Mudrarakshasa in this thread.

Purpose
Enough is enough. .I was wanting to see Mudrarakshasa gripping plot in this serial, but alas I was cheated... They have reduced great king to molester and shrewd diplomat to grunting Mother inlaw. ALL of my friends including myself cannot just spend time by discussing useless tracks which has no meaning... More than that Chandra becoming Nandini's DAsi,freaks me out...So lets start

I AM dedicating this to My Sanskrit teacher, who was very kind to share all possible information available in this Classic.

PRELUDE

MUDRARAKSHASA

The Mudrarakshasa translates as The Signet of the Minister ie Amatya Rakshasas

It is a historical play in Sanskrit by Vishakhadatta that narrates the ascent of the king Chandragupta Maurya (r. c.324 - c.297 BCE) . It is written by this playwright after 1000 years of Chandragupt reign.

Characters involved
Before proceeding to others Let me say something about

Amatya Rakshasas

Amatya means minister and Rakshasas is His Name.

As we all know, he is prime minister of Dhananand. HE WAS MORE LOYAL TO King. IN FACT After Dhananand was defeated,Amatya could not tolerate Chandragupta Maurya as king of Magadh. He tried to Assassinate him in all possible ways.He gave tough fight to Chanakya. BOTH of them had to think ahead of each other . SInce Chanakya had advantge of Being King minister while Amatya was hiding in forest ,naturally he got defeated. But He was not executed ,Chanakya made him Prime minister of Chandragupt to strengthen Akand Bharat Nirman
Next part ,I will start The NARRATIVE OF THE EPIC

The name of Chanakya has become almost synonymous with a Machiavellian .He is known for ruthless style of leadership. These epithets are, to a large extent is justified.

Visakhadatta's play Mudra Rakshasa reveals another side of Chanakya shows him as a much more complex character with excellent leadership skills. Mudra Rakshasa, after we read , we come out with a feeling of admiration for Chanakya for his wit.No doubt this ugly brahmin of Dravida was a kingmaker. LOOKS often dont reflect one's brain. This man was definitely tricky and ruthless..

Mudra Rakshasa is a story of an intricate plot developed and played to perfection by Chanakya. He was a teacher in Takshashila University, had seen the Greeks invading and conquering North Western India. HE went to gather support from Nand of Magadh, who turned him down after insulting him calling him ugly .Enraged Chanakya took an pledge to eradicate Nand vansh from earth . Chanakya found Chandrsekar alias Chandragupt ,who happens to be son of Nand and Dasi Moora capable of helping him in this task. HE gave education and trained him for 7 long years.

Chanakya, with the aid of his remarkable protege Chandragupta, raised an army and defeated Nanda of Magadh. This led to founding of a vast and glorious empire which unified most of India and gave it the rules of state governance.
The play starts soon after this conquest and the installation of Chandragupta as the king and Chanakya as the prime minister.

The plot devised by Chanakya was, surprisingly, to bring to the court ,AmatyaRakshasa, the able and loyal prime minister in the Nanda , so that he could be made the prime minister to Chandragupta. Chanakya recognised the excellent qualities and abilities of Amatya and his sense of loyalty. Hence Chanakya wanted Rakshasa not only to come over as the prime minister but also do so willingly. To achieve this, he weaved a complex plot involving The signet ring of Rakshasa.

Avantika,

Your post comes in an appropriate time. it is mere coincidence that last week only I saw a program in Epic channel on Mudrarakshasa. It centered around the story and role of Jeeva Sidhhi- one of the leading disciples and, subsequently, a spy of Chanakya. Jeeva Sidhhi was employed by Chanakya to spy on Amatya Rakshasa and how he foiled all his plans to execute Chandragupt by informing Chanakya beforehand.

Considering the construct of the program and the narrators being professors and researchers from University of Bombay, I found the piece authentic, well-crafted and spared from the absurd liberties taken by the creative teams of daily soaps, including CN.

They made some astonishing points which are as following:

1. Chandragupt was illegitimate child of Dhananand from a daasi called Moora. This is one version I have never heard or read before. The chanakya-dhanananda clash and Chanakya discovering and training Chandragupta stands same.
It left me wondering if history is, especially the ones without pictorial records, really open to numerous interpretations.

2. Chanakya never wanted to eliminate Amatya Rakshasa. Rather he was aware of Amatya's political and administrative acumen hence tried his best to include him in Chandragupt's team. Chanakya has realised he will not be always to successful to thwart every fatal attempt from Amatya hence tried to convince and reconcile, which eventually he succeeded in.

Just felt like sharing these points with you.

Very nice thread, Avantika. I remember reading Mudrarasksha a decade ago in translation in my dad's personal library. I literally loved and adored it at that time. I am going to love reading this again. Keep up the good work.

Thanks guys for encouragement. ..
From next post I am going to start play...

Except for my writing style, nothing I am going to change. ...Like characters, story and plots everything will be intact...No question of deviation...Except for places,I will say some info regarding characters fir better understanding. ...
This play has 8 acts. The role of our Chandragupta is very minimal. WE Will see battle of wits between Chanakya and Rakshasas. ...Rakshasas is not a man,who will accept defeat easily .Between we will have Malyaketu son OF PArvartak .. RAJA TOO.. This malay is lot different from our comedy ketu..He does not eat Ladoo or mingle with ladies mandali..!!!!! Some serious antagonist. ...And Our Chandrasekhar (a) Chandragupt is only side character...Dont be surprised By name Chandrasekhar. . (Its the birth name of our King, later changed into Chandragupt...I dont have any historical evidence for this, but read in a book which associates folk tales of Mauryan. Days. ..MAy be true or falsr..but its beyond the scope of this play)...

Avant - Fab thread - This is brilliant stuff - I am so looking forward. 😃

But What ?!!!!!!!! CGM is the son of Dhananand and Mura ( Daasi) ? Which means he married his sister ?

This is very strange and unheard of.

CGM was definitely son of a Daasi or some worker in the palace but I thought his dad's identity is unknown. Please elaborate on this more yaar, whoever knows it.

This theory makes CGM a part of Nand's tribe . I somehow think it is far fetched.

😆 Ketu Vs Malay(Original). Bring it on.

Why do not our serial makers believe in a strong antagonist yaar ? The stronger and brainy the villains are the better the story will turn out to be. Wish an out out evil Malay was pitted against CG in CN.

But currently it is not even a joke that he is sitting there and touching Malati in different places . 😆
