If you are looking for vocally strong music and lyrics, the 90s are certainly not it. You have to go further back to the Rafi Saab, Kishore da era to get a more musically pure era. I really don't find the 90s that great when you compare them with those era lyrics and voices honestly.
The thing though is, every era evolves and tastes change. Now the trend is towards more dance and foot tapping music and more mainstream, not clubs. I come from a community where we do not have sangeet as part of our wedding ceremony, but now it is very common to have an evening of dancing as part of the wedding ceremonies even in the US and certainly in India. The songs that are played are the foot tapping, danceable, non vocally strong music.Good music never dies. And certainly beautiful voices are there in every era. There is a place for that in every era be in popular music or classical music. I used to think there will never, ever be voice like SPB. But I have been proven wrong with Hariharan, Karthik and so many new voices both men and women. So there is good music in this era, there are good lyrics, even inspirational. I was so surprised how the lyrics of the Dangal title track helped me overcome fear in a personal situation this year.
