"Should I smile that you are my friend or cry ...because that's all we'll ever be"
Past
"Maaan," A young Geet shouted jumping throwing her arms around her best friend who was just back from work. "Geet, calm down", He said stumbling back. "So this time you are back for good right", She asked. "Ah..for a short while", He told. Geet pouted, "That is not fair, you don't have time for your friend. And you promised the last time, you would spend time with me"."I'm sorry Geet but you do remember what my dream was right". "I do, but I really feel lonely without you. I don't know what you are doing, are you eating properly, getting enough sleep or do you miss me like I do", She said. "I do miss you Geet", He spoke with utmost sincerity. "Will we be together in the future Maan", She asked with uncertainty. "I will always be by your side Geet", He promised taking her hand in his. His father was a brave Knight of the Kingdom and Maan was proud of him. Maan's world came shattering down when he lost his father in a war. He became silent and disappeared and now when she saw him was as her General.
Geet reminisced about her past and her happy days with him,"You promised Maan". She could not get why he was not the same now. "Did he really forget their time together ",She thought sadly.
Their love for one another though unsaid was always there. She met him today and it was like he seemed so distant. She decided to talk to him again. On the other hand Maan was happy to see her again "I'm really sorry Geet, I know you are sad but we both have our duties to fulfill". He knew shes hurt and hes too but he also remembered the promise he made to his deceased father that he will never betray the King and that was the reason he could not go back to calling her Geet, but decided to be formal with her as a General should be with the future Queen of this country. He had come to know that many people desired her mysterious powers. He had witnessed it himself when she used to visit him in their childhood.He would do anything and everything in his power to protect her.
"General Maan, you have been summoned by the King", An attendant informed him. "I will be there right away", He said. He made his way to the King's chambers, "Sire, what can I do for you". "Maan, I want to tell you about something. As you know Geet has magical powers for which many people are after her and our kingdom is under attack continuously, but now I got a new information that a wizard is after her powers, please I want you to be with her like a shadow", The King pleaded. "Sire, your wish is my command, I will never leave the Princess' side for even a second",Maan bowed down accepting the orders.
Maan, though did not show but now he was worried about his friend. When he lost his father, he resolved that he would not lose anyone anymore and that is why he went through the tough training to become a General and leave his dream of becoming a renowned scholar, just to protect her, her smile, she was all he had left with. He knew there are many people who want to capture her for the powers she holds. He knew she is powerful but what if ...no, he will not let any harm come to her, he resolved.
Present
The Professor accompanied Geet to his personal study room allotted by the University for his research, "Miss Handa, this is my record room for my works". Geet was awed by the huge room and the number of documents arranged there chronologically. "Professor, if you don't mind can I have a look around", She asked. "Sure make yourself comfortable", He said. Geet picked up a document and came to know about how detailed his work is. The minute details of every excavation was there. He has been to many places and this will be the best for her work too. "Professor, you have a fine collection. I did not know you have researched on such difficult topics too", She said. "Thank you, Miss Handa, I'm glad you liked my work", Maan smiled. "Geet will do, Miss Handa make me sound old", She smiled. "Alright then, Geet you can call me Maan too", He smiled."And lets be friends from now on, what say," She forwarded her hand. "Accepted", He smiled.
"Great, we will be the best team", She grinned. "I heard about your adventures from Sir", Maan said. "Oh they are nothing", She said. "No, I honestly feel you have done a really commendable work in this field at such a young age, your documentaries are really good", He applauded her. "Thank you", She smiled. "So what made you interested in this particular mystery", He asked.
"I don't know, it is just like I really find these stories around them intriguing", She said. "Same here, I just feel...there is something missing behind these stories", Maan said. "Isn't it intriguing, they haven't found any of the remains of the Princess or her General...it is like they disappeared in thin air", She said. "Interesting observation Geet but we will think about it later, I just have a lecture now and then we can head out for lunch," He said. "Yes sure, I am famished", She smiled. The Professor went for the lecture but Geet insisted to accompany him to see his way of teaching to which he agreed. Geet watched how patiently he explained his students all the details and could see every student was attentive in his class. They asked him several questions and he answered patiently. They went out for lunch.
"So what would you like to have", He asked. "Anything will do", She said. They placed their orders and after sometime the food arrived. "Your teaching skills are excellent", Geet said starting the conversation. "Thank you, I just want my students to grasp everything in the simplest manner", He said humbly. "No, I really mean it, I have worked with many other Professors who do have the vast knowledge but would not have good teaching skills, half of the students would doze off in their class", Geet said. "Archeology, is not a very great subject for many people, it is somewhat boring, so I can understand, but I want my students to enjoy it like I do", He said. "It will be really great working with you, may be we will be able to unravel the mystery behind the strange stories of the Princess and her General, as many people gave up on this mystery after getting nothing for years but I really hope we get something", She smiled. "I really hope we do", He smiled.
