Ye Zahide tang nazar ne mujhe kaafir jaana

Kaafir ye samajhte hain ki musalman main

The nursery of Indian secularism*, the House of Worship, or the Ibadat Khana built by Akbar has been finally located in Fatehpur Sikri, without any doubt whatsoever. After 450 years, we know where that place actually stood.

{ I am talking of secularism in true sense. Not that secularism which has established its roots in our country in present times in the form of appeasement of certain sections. }

The Ibadat Khana of Akbar has been excavated & found near the palace of Jodha Bai in Fatehpur Sikri. To be precise, it is excavated between palace of Jodha Bai & Jama Masjid in Fatehpur Sikri. Archaeologists have taken help from the description given in contemporary Persian texts of Akbar's era & a contemporary painting drawn 2 years before death of Akbar in 1603 by his painter Nar Singh. That painting was taken to Persia by Nadir Shah in 1739 when he attacked, ransacked and looted Delhi. At present, the painting is in Chester Beaty Library, Dublin, Ireland.

The man behind this discovery is Mr. Karingamannu Kuzhiyil Muhammad, renowned Indian archaeologist, who also served as the Regional Director (North) of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and is currently serving as Project Archaeological Director in Aga Khan Trust for Culture.

The discovery is also important for the reason that it has unsettled some of the "most big names" among the historians of India. Some of these "topmost historians" who had been teaching otherwise about the location of Ibadat Khana took it "personally" & in no time it turned into an ego issue. For those interested in knowing about these historians, read this link : https://www.dailypioneer.com/nation/former-asi-official-cries-foul-over-akbars-ibadat-khana-facts.html

These excavations and attempts to establish the exact location of Ibadat Khana of Akbar were continuing since 1980s !! But lot of politics and ego battles were fought, before a stamp could be given to this discovery. The ones who did not like this new discovery or the change in the old theory about Ibadat Khana, wrote books, tried to prove Mr. KK Muhammed wrong. But they could not nullify the archaeological evidence backed by contemporary painting and descriptions which were strongly in favor of Mr. Muhammed's stand. Learned people, despite all their scholarship, get blinded by ego, refusing to accept anything new which is found on basis of new evidence, if it goes against their point of view. In his autobiography, published in Malayalam, Mr. KK Muhammed has leveled some huge allegations on these established historians, including their attempts to create hindrance in careers of those young researchers who did not toe to their established version of history. This has to change and hounding of folks who attempt to "deviate from the line", has to stop.

Let us come back. Mughal Emperor Akbar, despite any of few of his shortcomings is remembered as someone who talked of tolerance in times of utter intolerance. For the reasons, now known to all of us & need not be repeated here, we all hold him in great regard. It has been almost 4 years now and all of us know much more about him than we had known before 2013.

We all have heard about Ibadat Khana. Many have visited Fatehpur Sikri also. But none knew where this place was ? It was lost. But now archaeologists have excavated and found it. This video made me little emotional. I can not explain in words what i went through in my mind, when i was watching this. I watched and re watched. I have read the proceedings of the religious debates given in a contemporary Mughal chronicle & seen all those paintings too. But it is an entirely differently feeling when you see that place, where these debates took place in reality, 450 years ago.

The editor has made this video so beautifully. There are animations in this video which show how the real Ibadat Khana looked like. Then, there is side by side comparison of original Ibadat Khana with its Mughal painting in one half of the screen & the archaeological remains in the other half. Such was their hard work and dedication, that they have even excavated the three platforms on which the priests used to sit. 2 platforms were used by the priests and on the top platform Akbar used to sit.

This is the painting, Mr. KK Muhammed made use of. I also posted this in some of my blogs. This shows Christian missionaries interacting with Akbar. Azu'l Fazl and his brother Faizi are sitting near Akbar. The scene is from Ibadat Khana.

I would like to pay tributes to the painter Nar Singh also for creating this painting so finely. When you see the video below, try to compare the detailing of actual Ibadat Khana with this painting. :)

This 10 minutes video is also a tribute to Akbar.

Such was Akbar's ways that Muslims thought he was an apostate from Islam, and for the Hindus he was a Muslim. None can describe these thoughts more beautifully than the following lines of Akbar Allahabadi -

Ye Zahide tang nazar ne mujhe kaafir jaana
Kaafir ye samajhte hain ki musalman main

Almost similar argument i also made last year, in my detailed blogs (a 3 part series) on death of Akbar. Here is the link to that IF thread : Rise of Orthodoxy, Jesuit obituary, Reaction of People on Akbar's death Part3 .

{ Though, these days i am writing in Peshwa Bajirao forum. Link1 Link2 }

I found this video appealing to me, as i like doing this kind of comparison, by trying to find similarities between onscreen and real life events. Check out this video. I have said everything from my end. :)

Hi Abhay
Words fall short to describe the excitement and thrill passing thru me at this discovery! It's got to be one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in India in decades.

I have been to FS a few years back and at that time, I wasn't aware that Ibadat Khana doesn't exist anymore. I kept looking for it and finally our guide showed us some ruins at the entrance of Fatehpur as being the tentative Ibadat Khana. He wasn't sure but just to satisfy us, i guess, he pointed it out as the possible site. It was extremely disappointing.

Believe me, like some of the early historians, i too wondered if the monument with the single, centrally placed, carved pillar was the Ibadat Khana. But obviously, it was not.

To me, FS is Akbar and nothing symbolises the core of his identity as a person and as an emperor more than the Ibadat Khana, the place where his spiritual journey started, the place where he stopped being just a devout muslim and started embracing the best of all faiths, the place where he dreamt of Din-i-ilahi and sul-i-kul,... It was here that the man who was responsible for the Chittor massacre changed into the man now renowned the world over as a liberal and tolerant emperor, far ahead of his times.

{Many people say that he was just appeasing the majority community for political reasons, but i ask, did he need to? He could have continued as he was at the start of his rule and ruled over Hindustan with the power of his sword. }

I agree with you about secularism getting tarnished in modern times. But as the video shows, in medieval times too, there was intolerance everywhere, particularly in Europe. It was simply hard for anyone to believe there could be a king who treated all faiths just the same, who celebrated all faiths equally, who had the liberality of mind and heart to accept that every religion has something positive to offer , yet understood that no religion is a complete solution in itself.

Anyone who has an abiding interest in Akbar and his outlook towards faith as it should be practised, would be interested in making a trip to the Ibadat Khana. For Akbar lovers, this place is nothing short of a pilgrimage. {I cannot tell you Abhay, the peace i experienced at Akbar's mausoleum in Sikandra. That kind of calmness can only come from a person who was spiritually aware and had transcended man-made walls among communities. }

I saw the video shared here and it is so beautifully made. The perseverance of Mr Muhammed in excavating the site using contemporary paintings and Persian chronicles is commendable, esp in the face of opposition from established historians. I was zapped that there is so much similarity between the painting by Nar Singh and the actual excavated site. It's uncanny. The painter must be lauded for capturing every detail so finely that it became possible to identify this beautiful monument from a mound of rubble. There is no doubt at all in my mind that this site is indeed the original Ibadat Khana.

I can imagine Akbar sitting on the top platform, with his closest companions, liberal muslims themselves, Fazl and Faizi, and the Chrisitian missionaries just below and the other priests on the lowest platform , debating the essence of each faith. No doubt priests from other religions may have felt that if Akbar was impressed by their arguments, he might convert to their faith. LOL Like the Christian missionaries never gave up trying to convert him, even during his last days.

The almost open-air monument, open to receive the positive vibes from the five elements of nature, was close to the Jodhbai palace and i can imagine Jodhbai watching the proceedings from the latticed windows of her palace. In any case, I wonder where the door shown in the backdrop of Akbar's seat led to! Was it sheer coincidence that Akbar chose a site close to Jodhbai's palace to build a monument to discover himself and his spiritual identity?

I can go on, but i have already said a lot 😆 So stopping here for the moment. Closing on a note of thanks again Abhay for bringing this awesome discovery to light here. 😊

I am delighted to see Abhay and Radhika back on this forum with invigorating posts. Sure miss the old days when I looked forward to interesting historical nuggets to savor whenever I spotted your posts on the forum.
The post by Abhay about the Ibadat khan and the documentary was interesting. The ego clash of historians is unfortunate.

I ignore their idiotic doing and focus on Fatehpur Sikri. There are so many things that fascinate me from there. I have to visit it some day.

I remember a few years back, an archeologist uncovered the place where Akbar's drinking water was kept. This room housed the biggest urn in the world and it was used to store Ganga water since Akbar drank nothing else.

Abhay,

I really can't describe how exciting it is to know of the discovery of the Ibadat Khana!! Though FS looked like a completely preserved city, I always believed there was more to it and I'm glad it was. 😆 It's such an amazing feeling to finally get to see something that has been invisible for 450 years. I really hope historians like Mr.KK continue the good work and bring to our notice any other things we've missed! Now I want to visit FS again just to catch a glimpse of the nursery of true Indian secularism.

And what to say about the video!! Simply wonderful it is. The painting is so strikingly similar to the actual building...kudos to the painter Nar Singh. 👏 In fact the painting played such a great role in the discovery, the place wouldn't have clicked without it!!

About Akbar, so much has been said that I need not say more. This man was ahead of his times then, and I believe he is still much much ahead of our times in his liberal thinking. Living in today's divided India, it was heart-warming to see the video mentioning Akbar's India as a peaceful dwelling for all religions. I just hope we can learn something from that India!!

Thanks a lot for sharing this info with us here, Abhay. It was good to see you on JA Forum after long.

Hi Abhay, 😊

Thank you for sharing this significantly informative video. 👍🏼 👏

Hats off to the persistent efforts of Mr KK Muhammad, history lovers all over the world now get to see the ruins of this beautiful sacred structure.

Abhay, I am totally in tune with your definition of secularism.

I am unable to find words to express my happiness after watching it. The actual 'Ibadat khana' is a silent testimony to religious gatherings hosted by the truly secular Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar, several centuries ago. The resemblance between the painting of the structure with Akbar in discussion with various spiritual leaders in comparison to its ruins now, prove without an iota of doubt that the excavated ruins is indeed that of the Ibadat Khana. I cannot wait to see it.

Do you know if the area is open to the public or if the ASI is still working to unearth more details?

I completely and totally agree with Radhika that Akbar's tomb at Sikandara does pull a visitor towards it, with a lot of positivity. I am a huge admirer of Emperor Akbar. In my opinion it is something beyond its architectural splendor, it is an indescribable sense of pure reverence, hallowedness that one feels, standing next to his tomb. Besides a feeling of deja vu, there is a feeling of tranquility, of harmony.

Excellent information Abhay. I am thrilled after watching this video. Thanks again.
