I've been following Ishqbaaaz, and by extension Dil Boley Oberoi, from the very start, mostly because I absolutely loved Omkara as a character. That being said, I should also admit that I'd been a Kunal jaisingh fan since his TBP days. I initially watched the show because he was playing one of the leads and then I fell in love with the quiet, poetic charm city that was Omkara. Omkara Singh Oberoi was interesting as a character, because he was not the quintessential macho hero that Indian Television usually produces. Omkara was an artistic soul, talking philosophy and living tranquility. Omkara loved his peace, he recited deep poetry. The long locks were definitely not something we saw everyday. He was, in a way no male lead had ever dared to be, utterly careless and indifferent about his clothes. T-shirts a size too big, pants hanging loose around the waist, Omkara was different, and THAT, was his charm. Omkara was the 'soul' and the very definition of a soul is that it is on the inside. It looks for beauty beyond what is visible, it is not enamored by pulchritudinous shells.
What Dil Boley Oberoi did though, was to completely rip this persona off Omkara, only to turn him into another Shivaay Singh Oberoi. Yes, the plight his beloved mother suffered hurt him. Yes, it probably took away the little innocence he had managed to preserve amidst all that he had gone through. Yes, it was probably the one thing that pushed him over the edge. But that wouldn't, shouldn't change the very core of who he is. Shivaay and Omkara are two different personalities, and incidents, even ones as traumatizing as these, cannot negate the innate sensitivity that Omkara has been repeatedly shown to possess. He is NOT Shivaay, he is his own person and that means that portraying him as a ruthless, insensitive businessman is basically slaughtering the very essence of his personality. His mother's pain can harden him, but it cannot, should not, turn him into something even he himself cannot identify with. Omkara has always viewed the world in blacks and whites, he has always been judgemental, so him making an opinion about Gauri is not a big deal. What is a big deal, however, is that he destroyed her entire shop in a fit of anger only because she did not go his way. Omkara is the person who stops to check if the person is okay when he sees some random stranger crying somewhere. He is the kind of person who fights with his brother when he sees that a suicide at his family's party is being covered up. He is the same person who urges Shivaay to be nice to Anika, nags him to Apologize to her for being rude. Omkara is not the one to destroy people's shops, he's not someone who looks at people like they are dirt on his shoes. Omkara is definitely not the guy who literally throws a woman on the ground and demeans her at every chance he gets (well, unless the woman is Svetlana, in which case all the bets are off).
Don't get me wrong,I love Shivaay as much as I love Omkara, but what I hate is that the creative team feels that they have to turn Om into Shivaay 2.0 for his story to pick up. Omkara Singh Oberoi is loved BECAUSE he is so very different from Shivaay, turning him into something he is not isn't the way to go. ShivKara work because they're opposites, one Yin to the other's Yang. An insensitive Om isn't Om at all, and if the CV's decide to go through with this, I for one am not sure if I want to watch Omkara being butchered.
