Priyanka Chopra talks about her most prized piece of jewellery

Crossover stardom, it seems, is not just limited to the stars. In just a few years, Nirav Modi's eponymous Indian jewellery brand has seen international success in New York, London and Macau. Seeing how global domination in on their agenda, getting Priyanka Chopra on board to be the face of the jewellery label seems like the obvious choice.

For the brand's latest advertising campaign, Chopra stars in a timely commercial (Valentine's Day's almost here) with Sidharth Malhotra. The video sees Malhotra struggling to pull off the perfect proposal for Chopra, who, coincidentally, has just resolved to stop saying yes"of course, some hilarity and feels ensue.

There's big and then there's Priyanka Chopra's big level of success. In the last couple of years, the actor has not let the ball drop on a single count, both internationally and on the home front. Vogue spoke to the actor on her association with jewellery, an ever-evolving sense of style, and scaling new heights.

You have been representing India on a global scale for a while now, as has the Nirav Modi label. How did the conversation for the campaign come about?
Thank you for the compliment. I'm very happy to be associated with the brand. Nirav and I are share a fierce pride in our heritage and are united by the idea of bringing that heritage to the global forefront.

How would you define India Modern'?
It is all around us"be it the world of business, entertainment, technology, social change. There is a whole new India emerging that's more confident, more in step with the globe. Our demographic is our strength, majority being below the age of 35 who are driven to affect change and are increasingly getting involved in things that will bring about that change. Modern India does not mean that we were ever backward, it just means we are more connected globally than ever before.

Does jewellery hold sentimental value for you? Is there a piece that you treasure?
Yes, it most definitely does. There is something about having a piece handed down generations or owning a piece that was crafted specifically for you.

I have this charm necklace, which is extremely special to me because it belonged to my father, whom I lost to cancer almost four years ago. At the beginning of his health battle (in 2005), my mom bought him this solid-gold chain with a single charm"an emerald (which, as per astrology, can positively affect your health). Over the next eight years, my family collected healing charms from around the world to add to this chain. My dad hated wearing it"probably because of how heavy it became. When we lost him, the chain with all its charms was given to me and I've worn it pretty much every day since then. As someone who's almost never home, the chain makes me feel like I'm connected to my family and my world, wherever I go.

If you could gift your mother a piece of jewellery from Nirav Modi's latest collection, what would it be?
The Embrace' bangles"I love the ingenious mechanism they have. My mom is very eclectic in what she wears and these bangles can be worn with pretty much everything. Not only are they elegant, but they're also a little playful, which is like my mom in many ways.

You recently accessorised the Sally LaPointe ensemble at the People's Choice Awards with jewellery by Nirav Modi. How would you describe the look?
The Sally LaPointe ensemble was a very feminine outfit... very light, which brought a touch of spring to a cold January. I accessorised the dress with the Nirav Modi Jasmine' ear studs and Embrace' rings, which I stacked up, one on top of the other. I love the versatility of these rings and the fact that I could wear them with on the red carpet as easily as I could wear them with my jeans and a simple top. The ear studs are so delicate, lightweight, and fuss-free"I like the design of the asymmetrical petals as they add a sense of unpredictability to the piece.

Speaking of style, how do you think yours has evolved?
Quite dramatically! I think I experiment far more now, than I did before. Over the years, I began to understand what suits me and stopped following fashion trends blindly. That understanding helps me carry what I am wearing with confidence. I have also come to enjoy the process, so prepping and being on the red carpet is so much more fun now.

What are the projects you will be working on in 2017?
There is lots happening this year. Quantico season two is just back from the winter break and shoot for the same is in full swing. Baywatch releases this summer on May 26. Promotions will be across the globe so yes, more travelling. What has also been a very exciting journey is setting up and working on my production house Purple Pebble Pictures. It has been a huge learning curve and so exciting to interact and support the immense talent we have across India. Post the first three regional films, we have three more lined up for release as well as three children's films, which will also release this year. More are in the discussion stage. As for Hindi films, I am currently working through what interests me. More on that soon.
