A DAY IN THE LIFE OF PUNIT SONI
The Soni's Residence. An elegant triple storeyed contemporary bungalow set in a quiet locality away from the city traffic. A crystal white Honda sedan rests in the porch while the plush green lawn basks in the early morning sun.
The kitchen of the Soni's is up and making noise already. Intermittent blasts from the pressure cooker and the beautiful smell of parathas fill the house.
Ayesha Soni is at the stove, cooking. Though gorgeous with her mane of copper red hair, her eyes are deprived of sleep. She yawns and flips the paratha.
Out in the living room, we hear Mrs. Hiral Soni yelling. She is Raj's and Punit's mother and is in her late sixties. She limps as she walks, all thanks to advanced arthritis.
Hiral - Punit! (no response) Punit!
Finally, a moan floats down from upstairs. "Mmm."
Hiral - Aren't you up yet? It's past 8.30 already!
"Coming", comes another strangled moan.
Mr. Shyam Soni, Punit's father, a short, bald, stocky man in his early seventies sips on a cup of tea and reads the newspaper.
Shyam - Hiral. How many times do I have to tell you? It's not your job to wake him up. Stop treating him like a baby. He's 28 for God's sake and it's his duty to be responsible. If not, he'll learn in due course.
Hiral - But it's 8.30.
Shyam - So what?
Hiral - He'll be late for breakfast.
Shyam - Let him be. That's his problem.
Hiral - The food will get cold.
Shyam - Do one thing. Go upstairs, keep him on your lap and feed him.
Ouch! Shyam's suggestions hurt!
If Hiral had a choice, she would have taken the stairs. But she can't. Not with her knees!
Ayesha hears their conversation and smothers a smirk. She continues to cook.
Hiral is very worried. Thankfully, her elder son, Raj comes down. He prefers loose casuals at home - a t-shirt and a pair of shorts.
Hiral - Oh thank God you came! Is Punit up? Any idea?
Raj reaches downstairs and heads to the kitchen.
Raj - No idea.
Hiral - Can you just check on him? If he's awake?
Raj - Don't worry Ma. I'm sure he's upstairs in one piece.
Like father. Like son. Big fans of sarcasm.
Raj - (walks into the kitchen) Ayesha. Tea.
Ayesha - Coming.
Hiral continues her attempts to wake Punit.
Hiral - Punit! Punit!
Shyam - Hiral. I swear. Call him one more time and I'll throw both of you out.
Hiral gets nervous. Shyam's temper is something she could never handle. Actually no one can.
Hiral - Then this boy will spend the entire day working out. And by the time he eats breakfast it's always noon.
Shyam - Let him do whatever he wants! Work out. Dance. Itch his bums. That's his bloody problem. Just stop running after him. It's high time that he grows up.
Raj walks in from the kitchen with a cup of tea.
Raj - Mom. Stop babying him. Really. He needs to learn some responsibility. This guy walked out of his job six months ago and ever since, he's been sitting at home doing nothing. What is this fellow doing about his future? Is he even serious about it? I'll be honest, I don't see him doing anything other than whiling away his time on Facebook and WhatsApp. The only thing he's really interested in is bodybuilding.
CHLAP-CHLAP-CHLAP-CHLAP-CHLAP-CHLAP-CHLAP.
Punit Soni descends the stairs noisily, his chappals slapping loudly against the floor as he does. He's dressed in a t-shirt and a pair of half pants. His hair is all messed up and his eyes all groggy.
Shyam gets irritated.
Shyam - Punit. Stop it! Stop making that noise!
Hiral is relieved to see him.
Hiral - Oh thank God. You're finally up. Don't you want to eat? What do you think the time is?
Punit - First I'll work out Ma. Then a shower. Then breakfast.
Hiral - Life isn't just work out Punit.
Punit shuts her up with a big hug and a couple of loud smooches all over her face and hair.
Hiral - Okay. Enough now. Stop it. I'll fall.
Punit - (keeps smooching) No you won't.
Shyam - Punit! Let her go!
Punit - (protests) Papa.
Shyam - I said let her go!
Punit obeys with a smirk.
Raj looks on and smirks as well. Punit's tactics always tickles his funny bone.
Shyam - Just don't touch anyone. Because when you do, it always hurts.
Punit - But Papa.
Shyam - No buts! Your hands are like stone! And how many times do I have to tell you? Don't make that disgusting noise with your slippers ever again. Have you ever heard anyone else in this house making so much of noise when coming down the stairs?
Punit - Sorry Papa.
Shyam - What sorry'? Do that one more time and I'll throw your slippers out. And why do you rush down the stairs? Do you want to have a bad fall?
Punit - I won't.
Shyam - Actually you should fall down and break a couple of bones. That should set you straight.
Punit - Don't say like that.
Shyam - And why not?
It's Shyam's turn to get Punit's shut-up' hug. He wraps his arms around his father and smooches him loudly all over his bald head.
Smooch! Smack! Smerp!
Shyam - Stop! Enough! I told you it hurts! Let go!
Punit - Muah! Muah! Muah! I love you!
What can Shyam do? He can't help it but laugh at his son's craziness.
Shyam - Fine! Enough now. Let go.
Raj is Punit's next target. He reaches out and almost hugs him. But Raj discourages his kid brother with a sharp pinch to his stomach.
Punit quickly backs off with a painful hiss.
Punit - Ouch! Shit. That hurt.
Raj - (smirks) You had better mind your own business. Like really quick. Or are you going to stand nude before the mirror and talk to your reflection again?
Punit knows what's coming. When Raj begins to pull his leg, it will never end. So he does what is wise. Clear the premises.
He rushes up the stairs with the same CHLAP-CHLAP-CHLAP-CHLAP.
Shyam - Stop it!!! This is your last warning!
THREE HOURS LATER
Punit stands before a full mirror with a barbell and admires himself in action. The black sleeveless vest that he's wearing, sticks to his athletic body that is drenched in sweat. He grits his teeth and groans as he slowly lifts the barbell to his chest for the hundredth time. His entire body shudders with the effort. He is ripped from top to bottom. His muscles are red and hot and glistens with sweat.
After his last set, he drops the bell to the floor and takes a deep breath.
Raj's angry voice rings from downstairs.
Raj - Punit! Stop breaking the house.
Punit - (mutters) Buzz off.
His eyes are on his reflection. He shifts his pose from one side to the other and admires his big bulging muscles.
Punit - (seductively) Oh yeah. Sexy. (whistles)
Pulls out his wet vest and throws it aside. He flexes his washboard abs and smirks.
Punit - Yeah. (whistles again)
Hiral yells from downstairs.
Hiral - Punit! Where are you?
Punit - (eyes still on his reflection) Coming.
Hiral - Hurry up! It's going to be noon. You still haven't had your breakfast!
Punit - Coming. (shifts pose) Need to thicken my wrists. Those veins need to be seen.
Hiral - Punit!!!
Punit - (irritated) Told you that I'm coming!!!
He looks at his reflection for one last time and winks. Finally, he wraps up his work out, picks up his vest and heads to the bathroom for a shower.
AN HOUR LATER
Punit is still not down.
He can be heard laughing and happily singing in the bathroom while showering.
Punit - A-la-la-la-la-long. A-la-la-la-la-long-long-li-long-long-long.
Past noon, Punit finally gets done with his breakfast.
Hiral - Beta. Can you go over to the grocers? We're out of essentials.
Punit - Sure Ma.
So he heads to the supermarket nearby. Once in, he picks up a basket and checks the list. A girl clad in a short, sexy skirt walks past and makes his head turn, checking out her long, beautiful legs.
He purses his lips and heads to the "Cereals" section. The aisle is empty except for one. A young woman. It's difficult to make out how old she really is, but Punit guesses her to be in her mid-twenties.
He eyes her from head to toe and smirks a bit. She is attractive. Very much! Especially her long, silky hair. Her big brown eyes. Pink, pouty lips. Perfect hips. Cute, compact and delicate frame. He can't make out whether the black kurta and jeans that she was wearing made her sexy or the other way around.
Her clothes aren't revealing. They are decent and yet something about her makes her so incredibly charming.
He looks away and tries to concentrate on his shopping. But his mouth waters. And he finds himself staring at her again. He gulps down the flood in his mouth and mindlessly browses through the boxes of cereal.
Punit - (whispers. Rolls his eyes) Whew. Man. So. Hot.
Next, the woman's voice startles him.
The woman - Hi. What was that again?
Punit freezes. Did she just hear what I said?
