Karan Johar, in biography, The Unsuitable Boy is being lauded for coming out of the closet but he sure has received flak for the same. It comes as a shock but famous names from the LGBTQ community have slammed the filmmaker for a particular stance of his, which includes him fearing the repercussions of confessing he is gay. KJo, while promoting his memoir, stated how despite being the poster boy of homosexuality in India, he never openly confessed the fact over fear of being jailed. Johar said that he feared he'll be jailed. This has sparked an outrage in the LGBTQ community, who have criticised the Dharma head honcho for his baseless fears. They believe that Karan's statement is misinformed and will further instill more fear in people to come out of their closet.
Famous LGBT activist, Pallav Patankar told a leading tabloid, "If an uneducated person in a remote Indian village comes and tells me that they are scared of coming out, I'd take it, but this coming from somebody with a stature as big as Karan's, I feel let down. He should be coming out as an empowered and powerful individual and actually make a difference for those helpless people living in villages. People who were earlier considering coming out will now sit and think twice, worried that an FIR might be involved - but this is baseless. You won't be arrested for coming out." Harish Iyer, known LGBT activist has also spoken up by stating, "Though his closet is made of transparent glass, I defend Karan's right to not spell the three words out. Karan Johar doesn't owe a coming out to anybody. We have no right to assume it is easy for him if we have not walked in his shoes. But yes, no one can be arrested for being gay. His fears are baseless, and just as anyone who is scared would need a friend to counsel, Karan needs one too." Humsafar trust, that actively supports and helps people of the LGBT community was also let down by Johar's words. They sent out a statement saying, "To come out is Karan's personal choice but he shouldn't misinform. His present statement encourages homophobia and gay bashing to bully the LGBTQ community in private and public spaces." While they've all found KJo's confession not accurate, it is believed that the repercussions of Section 377 is what may have caused him to say it. Serious action is taken against homosexual intercourse. However, the section doesn't criminalise a person's sexual orientation. Pallav has even held out his hand in support for the filmmaker by saying that the community will have his back if he ever falls in any trouble. "We have taken enough pangas for the community. Even if he ends up landing in jail, we'll come out in support, go to jail along with him and stand by him, even if he doesn't want to come out and support the community.
