How was Student of the Year so successful

A few days ago I asked the same question about Ishq Vishk, now I am asking about this pathetic film. I decided to watch Student of the year as it was quite similar to Ishq Vishk as in you know launching new actors with a college love story. After watching this I realized that Ishq Vishk was actually a very good college film when compared to this. Student of the year had nothing good, horrible story line , bad acting by the leads barring Varun here and there, and a ridiculous and fake portrayals of Indian Colleges. How in the world was this so successful even the music was subpar barring Ishq Wala Love

SOTY was not successful, it was not a clean hit. Neither poeple remember it fondly. Rather it has a bad rap for being a shit movie. But yeah it is popular, but in negative way. Oh Ishq Vicks, whatever was blah. Anything with Shahid and Amrita(correction Shahid and Amrita together) is blah. Boring.

Marketing. It was excessive and ubiquitous marketing IMO

A Semi Hit film isn't considered unsuccessful but rather successful. Yeah indeed not a clean hit.
But still did enough to be known and successful flick

I think one reason it became successful was KJO. He's like a celebrity. I know people who saw the film just because KJO directed it.
