Chapter 8
Kirti's car
"Main kya karun, Naira ko sach bataun, Haan mujhe usse batana chaiye. Magar mujhe lagta hai ke Karthik iss liye chup hai kyun ke shayad uss aurat ne Naira ya uski family ko threaten kiya hai. Shayad mein uss parivaar ko khatre mein dal dun, Karthik ka Dil toot jayega agar woh bach gaya aur usse pata chala ke unlogo ko koyi taqleef huyi. Guilt se mar jayega woh.", Kirti spoke to herself
"Lekin kaise chup rahun, mere bhai ko phasi ya umar qaid ho aur mein chup rahe jao kaise", a part of herself questioned her
"Toh kya unn logon ki zindagi mein khatra lao jinn se karthik behadh pyaar karta hai. Woh log Jo kuch jante bhi nahi, woh log jin ki beti ki wajhe se mera bhai dil se hasne lagga, uss Naira ki family, woh Naira Jo mere bhai se itna pyaar karti hai, itna trust karti hai, ke karthik ke kahne par bhi usse yakeen nahi ke Karthik uski maa ki accident ka zimedar ho sakta hai.", another part in her argued back.
"Kaise janne dun apne bhai ko, woh bhai Jo meri jaan hai, Jo mere liye bache jaisa hai, jiss ne humesha mujhe protect kiya", she spoke to herself again as a flashback ran through her head.

Kirti had fallen in love with a guy, he seemed loving, caring and a great person to be with. She was dating him for a year before anyone in either of their houses got to know. After he proposed her for marriage, she had talked to Manish about it and since the boy's family was from a well to do and respected family in town, they decided to go forward with the alliance. They met with the boy's family and they seemed like a decent bunch of people. Karthik had only come for the wedding and left the same day as the rituals ended. He had been really happy seeing his sister smile but he had felt something wrong, something unsettling during the wedding and he had told the same to Kirti but she brushed off his concerns. Thinking that the last marriage in their family had been swarna and Manish's and after what happened with that, he was somewhere scared except a new member, so she let it go.
Life was beautiful after marriage, just like she had imagined. Her in-laws treated her like their own daughter, they never differentiated between her and their son, they always motivated her to work, since Kirti had been a topper in the university of architecture she attended, they didn't want her talent to go to waste. Even her husband pushed her to do the same, she felt extremely happy to have such a family. Two and a half years passed by and Kirti found she was carrying her first child and was a couple of weeks into the pregnancy, like any woman who was about to go through the phase, she was extremely happy and content but at the same time a small fear engulfed her heart, that whether she would be a good mother, would she able to fulfil all responsibilities which came in with this new relation. But her in laws and husband put her fears to rest, assuring her that they would always be there for her, she had wanted to give the news to Karthik but her husband had stopped her reminding her that Karthik was in his final year and his final exams were only four months away and he should concentrate on that and on hearing the news he might get super excited and not concentrate on his studies.
"And plus am sure we want to see his face when we give him the news, tum uske chere ki kushi miss karna chati ho.", her husband asked her.
Thinking that he was right she gave her agreement and never told Karthik a word about it.
Months had passed by, Keerti was in her fourth month and the fifth month would start in a week and half. Karthik's exams were over and he would be

She sat on the bed caressing her stomach thinking about Karthik's reaction hearing the news whether he would be happy, that finally someone younger to him was coming, giggling to herself as she remembered Karthik always complaining to be the youngest in the family (chacha chachi have no children in this story) on more than one occasion. Or would he be upset that she had hid the good news from him for so long. Her husband entered into the room calling out her name to get her attention.
"Chalna hai, doctor ke pass", the man asked
"tum bhul gaye Veer, meri doctor out of town gayi hai, tum hi ne toh mujh se kaha tha ke unho ne call karke batiya", reminded Keerti
"Hum kissi aur doctor ke pass janna rahe hai, main yeh nahi cahta ke tum apna koyi bhi checkup miss karo", Veer said, caressing her hair making keerthi smile.
They went to the doctors, even her mother in law had come this time, though she had never come previously.
Her name was called and the three entered the doctor's cabin. They then entered the ultra sound room, keerthi was lead by the doctor to a bed in the room that was separated in the corner from the remaining room by a partition. Keerti slowly began to feel uncomfortable the tests were taking too long, she got up from the bed and was about to push the partition on the side and get out, but she stopped as she heard the conversation.
"Doctor kya hua", Veer asked
"Apko pata hai yeh illegal hai", the doctor told him.
"Issliye toh apko itni badi rakam di", Veer replied.
"Aap batiye toh zarra humari bahu ka beta hone wala hai ya beti, mujhe toh lagta hai ke beta hi hoga, mera pota, Waise bhi ladki kiss ko chaiye, bojh hi toh hoti hai hai woh", Keerthi's MIL said
"Haan maa, beta hi ho, Jo business agge le ja sakke", Veer spoke
"Lekin apki wife ko ladki hone wali hai", the doctor informed.
"Bacha girado, waise bhi hum ladki ka karenge kya, humein bacha girra hi dena chaiye, kyun maa", Veer asked his mother, Keerti who was listening to all behind the partition, gasped in shock as each dialogue unveiled the true face of her new family.
"Lekin apki wife ki jaan ko khatra ho sakta hai", the doctor told them.
"Toh humein usse kya, humein toh bas apna waris chaiye or aggar yeh mar bhi gayi toh mein apne bete ki dusri shaadi kar lungi, agar iss kaam me aur paise chaiye woh bhi tumhe mil jayenge", Veer's mother replied to the doctor.
Keerti felt all the energy drain out of her body as the words of her husband and his mother kept revolving around her head. She collapsed onto the bed, closed her eyes and let hot tears stream out, opened them after a while, hoping that she would be back home and this was all a bad dream but alas she was where she was. She left a vibration under her hand and saw her phone ringing, a smile came on her lips as she read the name "Karthik" on screen
"Karthik", she said in a tear filled voice.
"Kya hua Di", Karthik panicked hearing her tone.
"Mere bache ko woh", Keerthi managed to speak difficulty
"Bacha, Di aap pregnant hai", Karthik said ecstatically.
"Woh dono", Keerthi said stammering in fearful tone choking on her words
"Kya hua Di, aap kush nahi hai aap ko toh bache bahut pasand hai", asked Karthik
"Tum bas jaldi se wapas ajao, mujhe tumhari zarrorat hai", Keerti said breaking into tears.
"Di mein India mein hi hun apko surprise dena chata tha bas apke ghar 15 minutes mein phaunch jaunga,"replied Karthik
"Tum XYZ clinic phaunch sakte ho mein wohi hoon, lekin andar mat anna", Keerthi asked.
"Magar aap aise itni darri huyi kyun hai", asked Karthik
"Tum sahi the bhai, woh log acche nahi hai, woh mere bache ki jaan lena chate hai kyun ke woh ladki hai.", Keerthi finally managed to say makin Karthik's anger reach its highest level.
"I will be there as soon as I can", Karthik said seething with anger and cut the phone, he asked the taxi driver if he knew where the clinic was, luckily enough it was just around the corner and it would take only a minute or two to reach.
"Keerthi", Veer called out pushing the partition aside.
"Tum ro rahi thi", questioned Veer looking at her tear stained face.
"Thodi emotional hogi thi, baby ko dekh kar", keerthi fumbled with her words as she spoke.
"Keerti tumhare sign in papers par chaiye", Veer said handing her some papers
"Abortion consent", she read aloud
"I know tumhe bahut bura lag raha hoga, lekin iss baby ko janam dene se tumhari jaan ko khatra ho sakta hai,you know how much I love you, please in par sign kardo I can't loose you, aur tumhe pata hai doctor ne yeh bhi kaha ke baby ke handicap honne ke chance hai, kyun humare bache ko aisi zindagi de, kiss liye main ne sign kar diye, tum bhi kar lo", Veer begged crying crocodile tears .
"Lekin main ne toh doctor ke mun se uska ulta sunna, ke iss bache ko girrane se meri jaan ko khatra hai. Aur meri bachi ladki hai handicapped nahi", replied Keerthi pushing him away from her.
"Toh tum ne sab sun liya, good ab mujhe yeh patni vrata patti ki acting nahi karni hogi, chup chap sign kar lo, mein iss ladki ka bojh nahi uthana jata ", Said Veer gripping her hand
"Tum se kaun khe raha hai kuch karne ko, main toh khud jati hun tumhara saiya meri beti se dur rahe", Keerthi said pulling her hand out of his grip and walked out of the room colliding with the doctor
"Apko sharam nahi atti yeh sab karte hue, doctor ho kar aap aise logon ka saath deti hai", keerthi said disgusted
"Aap inhe rokiye warna woh yeh baath spread ne karde, warna mujhe apni job se haath dhona padega aur apki reputation bhi khatm ho jayegi", the doctor warned.
"Keerthi rukko," Veer said as he ran behind her trying to get her to stop, finally catching up to her at the edge of a staircase and blocking her path.
"Veer mujhe janne do", Keerthi said angrily
"Biwi ho tum meri kaise janne dun", Veer smirked holding her from the waist
"Lekin tum itna zor de rahi ho toh chod hi deta hun", said Veer getting his hands of her but before he did he walked closer to edge of the first stair, so when he losseend his grip she tripped of the flight of stairs and landed on her stomach screaming in pain, Veer walked down passing his wife who was screaming in pain only to collide into his wife's brother, who had come this way hearing the screams.
Karthik caught Veer by the collar and flunged him towards the side, he couldn't care about Veer right now Keerthi was more important, a ran a few stairs up to his sister and put her bleeding reason his lap.
"I am here di, I won't let anything happen to you or my angel", Karthik said lifting Keerti into his arms and taking her to the doctor, soon the operation started, Karthik called the cops and got Veer, his mother and the doctor arrested, and also to get Veer's father arrested. Karthik waited at the hospital, hoping for some good news but all was lost when the doctor informed him that they weren't able to save the baby, though Keerthi was perfectly okay. Karthik broke down not able to understand how would he tell the truth to his sister.
He walked into her room as she just opened her eyes.
"Karthik", she said with a smile as she looked at him, her hands went to her stomach automatically which had been a habit for her these past months, her eyes widened in shock as she couldn't feel her bump, she took her eyes off her brother and focused them on her belly. "Meri bachi", she asked looking at Karthik, who burst into tears at the thought of having failed to protect his sister's kid.
"Meri bachi mujhe chod kar chali gayi, ab woh wapas nahi ayegi ne", Asked keerthi as tears streamed down her cheeks.
"Lekin apka ek Bacha ab bhi apke ankhon ke samne hai, main ke janne ke baad app hi meri maa bani, hum dono tab bhi the ek dusre ke liye aur aaj bhi hai", he said holding her hand.
It had taken time but with such a loving and caring brother, who supported her, took care of her every need, she was able to move on within a year.

She had managed to endure the pain of loosing her baby girl, maybe because she had only known her for months, but Karthik, she had known since she was four and he was in their mother's womb, she had been a mother to since the age of 12, she couldn't bear a thing happening to him, she would tell Naira the truth even if it were to hurt the Singhania's, she knew she was being selfish but it was Karthik's life at stake.
She called up Naira and told her what Karthik told her at jail and how she feels that Swarna definitely has a hand in all this and her family's life is probably at stake and that is why Karthik is taking up the blame. Explaining to her the lengths at which Swarna can go to get what she wants.
