Mrs. Sonakshi Dixit - The Most Kick-Ass Female Lead On TV Ever!
Meet Mrs. Sonakshi Dixit. Everyone knows her as the female lead of the series Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi' or rather as the voice of all modern, independent, confident and smart young girls on TV right now. Introduced initially as the feisty strict nutritionist who was the best' at her work and took immense pride in it, we slowly got to know her as also the best daughter, best sister and cousin that anyone could hope for. Now you might be wondering that this is the case with every female lead on Indian TV so what makes her any special? The fact that along with everyone else that she cares about, she never once forgets to fight "for herself" and that ladies and gentleman is the one single most important trait that sets her apart from every other female lead on TV who believe in not voicing their opinion, readily taking on the martyr role and killing their own ambitions and dreams for the supposed "greater good" of the family.
Right from the very beginning Sonakshi as a character has always managed to challenge the norms and break one too many stereotypes related to female characters on Indian TV. As a nutritionist and most of the times the sole earner of the family she clearly wasn't your typical serial daughter'. And so when she turned bahu' from beti', expectations naturally increased but so did our anxiousness over the possibility of losing our spit-fire Bengalan' to Ishwari's bahurani' in Radha Rani's terms.
But Sonakshi has time and again given us reasons that prove that she is anything but conventional and awesomely unique in way that only she can. Let's take a look at few of them.
When she refused to take crap from Dev and decided to teach him a lesson
Dev was being quite honestly put, an arse' to Sonakshi about Neha and her problem with Ranveer. Refusing to see from another perspective, telling her off and asking her not to interfere as she wouldn't understand his family'. Insinuating that she was still an outsider. So instead of putting up with it and keeping quiet, Sonakshi does exactly what we expected our Dr. Bose' to do, leaving and refusing to go back to a place where her opinions were invalid. And boy did it work like a charm!
When she made Dev realize that as important as place in his heart was, equal space in his room was her right as well.
It's only fair right? She left her own room, her home even, for him. The least he could do was let her have half of his room. It was great to see how she was clear about her right and did not hesitate to ask, in fact demanded for her right to half of his sanctuary. To own, treat and personalize it as she pleased. She also made sure that he had no choice but to agree.
When she decided it was time Dev grew up
No matter how busy a person got, they need to learn how to help themselves. Dev might be an incredibly busy business man but that is no excuse for him to be a baby in the house who needs people to do the smallest most simplest tasks for him. Like finding "his" pajamas in "his own" cupboard. It was refreshing and not really surprising to see that instead of being the usual wife who goes I'm happy to spoil my Pati Parameshwar' by doing all his work for him' Sonakshi decided that as she wasn't going to entertain his tardiness at home and that it was necessary that he learnt to do small things for himself.
When she emphasized how the wife's family were entitled to and deserved to enjoy same treatment as a husband's family.
When Sonakshi realized how Dev had started to refer to Sonakshi's mom as Aunty' she tried but when he refused to understand the enormity of the issue, she put her foot down and threatened to dish out the same treatment towards her mother-in-law.
Even when Ishwari tried to downplay the issue she refused to keep mum and decided to give her saasu maa' a piece of her mind, even pointing out the fact that as she had failed to carry out her responsibility as a mom which was to explain and prep Dev for the change that marriage brought in as her mom had done for her. Challenging the fact that only the daughter-in-law had responsibilities towards her in-laws and firmly believing that it went both ways. If a girl made an effort to accept her husband's family as her own and worked to become a part of it, a guy too had to make the same effort towards his wife's family.
With every passing episode, Mrs. Sonakshi Dixit is giving us more reasons to not only laud her but also get inspired by her way of doing things. Proving to us repeatedly that she definitely isn't your typical TV wale patni/bahu' material as she continuously redefines all the norms and sets new standards for female Leads on TV.
