Discussion Of The Week: Song..

Hello everyone!!

this is our 1st discussion of the week.. and this week the disussion is going to be about Movie Songs..!

there is atleast 5 songs in one movie, but why are these songs so important for a movie? can a movie be successful without songs?

and what are your fav. songs now and from the past? why do you like it.. because of the lyrics, choreography, or because of the singers?

First to answer your second part Sri -
The song "vellai pookkal ulagam engum
malarattum" (Kannathil muthamittal)
- my all time favourite - this song has
everything in it - lyrics, music, singer,
situation - u name it!!! When u listen to
this song, u can actually feel peace
descending all around and over you .
Another song which is a winner -
"Katrin Mozhi" from Mozhi. Basically
melodies have an immortal life.

With regard to "why songs in movies?" -
there was a time when part of the story
went in fast forward mode by a song -
cutting on the length of a movie but still
held the continuity. One good example is
from Balachander's movie "Avargal" -
"Ippadi oor thalattu paadava, athil appdaiye
yen kathaiyai kooravaa?" - Sujatha narrates
her married life to her ex lover. It was
much better than showing those flash back
scenes!!! At some point,having songs and filming
them abroad became a fad - rather a box office
incentive - the songs had no meaning or use
other than adding to the commercial value -
At present the movie fans have seen them all and
have lost interest - they are able to identify
the locations these days, thanks to the constant
exposures! Barring a few exceptions, songs do
not have any importance in movies - other than
feeding a large section of people who depend on
them as their livelihood!!

Why songs in the movies??
In the olden days, men used to go out for smoke or coffee whenever there was a song in the theater. Slowly, the trend changed with good picturisation and some movies ran only for the songs, inspite of the crappy story. Nowadays, some songs are picturised in a way that one cannot sit and watch with the whole family. The lyrics are no consolation either.
Rojakka and meli's choices are very good. Good songs like vellaip pookkal and melodies like munbe vaa etc DO exist.

Today, my choice is maargazhi thingal allavaa from sangamam.
Yday margazhi month started. I miss the bhajans and kolams and going to temple early in the mornings breathing fresh air ....and ofcourse soodaana pongal. 😛
Though this song from sangamam is not just thiruppaavai, the pallavi part is from aandaal's thiruppaavai. A.R.Rahman's music, voices of S.Janaki and Unni Krishnan and picturisation and importance of this climax song make this a notable gem.

Mots of the songs from the beginning of AR.Rahmans carrier is very
melodious and peaceful to hear like Roja, Bombay, rangeela, minsara
kanavu, 2x kannokondain, uyire esp that poonkaatrile song is very good to
hear, duet, puthiya mugam etc...... 😃

Rahman still ahsn't lost his magical touch. His songs are and will always be wonderful, I have a lot of faith in this man's music. True, his latest Sivaji and ATM hasn't had any 'AR' song as such, but even his dappankoothu songs are different. And you acn't really expect Vijay or Rajnikanth to sing 'Kaathal Rojave' or 'Ennavale adi ennavale' or 'uyire', right? 😆But for last years SOK, which belonged to the romantic genre, he composed some beautiful songs which are atill chart toppers -Munbe Vaa and New York Nagaram are superb songs.Even the Kummiyadi song was different, which if composed by some other MDs, would ahve been something with a lot of screaming and shouting

but my list it endless

the point is it cheers me up
