Re: Ranbir...no doubt, Ranbir played a huge part in making a a very difficult character understandable but if Ranbir alone can salvage all difficult characters, why were Tamasha and BV such disasters? An actor, no matter how good doesn't exist in a vaccum and cannot alone make sense out of utter nonsense.

I never said this was a perfect script but in my opinion, KJo handled a lot of the tricky, complex subject matter with sensitivity...I could see an evolution from the mess he made from KANK which included stupidities like the Sexy Sam track.

I'm not saying that Karan deserves credit only for taking up something complex...I'm saying Ayan's work can't be compared to his because the level of complexity isn't the same just yet...apples and oranges.

I think somewhere you have to keep in mind that Karan is a far more experienced director..in that getting certain technicalities right to movie making can not be forgiven from a director with his experience and stature. The ending of this movie alone (the cancer track) is enough for me to believe that this guy put zero effort into writing (if there's any at all) this film. If you're going to brag about taking up such a complex topic of unrequited love then at least have a solid narrative on paper...whatever he had on paper was really nothing extraordinary to convert into a movie in the first place. That to me speaks volumes about a lot of things. Karan relied on a lot of OTHER factors to highlight his movie BUT the script.

I've not seen BV ...but in my opinion, Ranbir was awesome in Tamasha. Ved was very complex and somewhat all over the place also..but, that performance was nothing short of commendable to say the least. The film overall was lame (not sure if it even was disastrous at BO like BV? think it was declared average?), but you can't take anything away from Ranbir's performance IMO..and even in Tamasha the script was weak for me.

Coming back to why I felt Ranbir overshines the script and director in ADHM is because Ranbir disclosed that Karan never had a script when he came to Anushka and him for ADHM. He just had a briefing of the theme (once again something Karan should really work on..pen your narration down on paper before you rope in competent actors..not fair to them especially since all of them give in because it's Karan). Karan even disclosed that the way Ranbir would portray Ayan is he'd ask him to provide him with one word when it came to portraying a scene..and that one word itself would be enough for Ranbir to pull off a scene. To me, it seems as if Karan's way too up in the air kind with his own direction and writing. 😆. I honestly feel there were major improvisations done by the leads...which makes me question what exactly did Karan have for them apart from this "complex theme" we all talk about (including him). So the way I see it, I do feel the leads brought out the best in the story..not the other way around.

The direction has zero flow..editing could have been better as well. Even something as basic as song placements were wrong. He had cutiepie and channa meraya back to back..made no sense whatsoever. Once again I feel you can't just easily forgive Karan for getting some of the basics wrong..which goes back to my point of his body of work/experience vs Ayan's.

Looks & beauty lies in the of the beholder but He acted the best in YJHD? definitely NOT. But I respect your opinion 😛

^^ But then acting is subjective IMO. Good acting and bad acting aside, it all boils down to connect and how well you sell your character to the target audience. And I thought Adi did a great job in that regard in YJHD. Avi was by far my favourite character in the film. You know those moments where he feels betrayed by Bunny's callousness yet tries his best to be happy for his friend- those were probably some of the best bits in the film. Oh well, I guess we can agree to disagree 😆

@bold: But didn't Anurag Basu have the same approach for Barfi? That the entire film was improvised as they went along? So how come he isn't being vilified for that approach while KJo is for stating that he started with the germ of an idea and the film developed organically as a collaboration b/w him and Ranbir?

It's fine if you disliked the film so much that you want to write off KJo entirely but I don't agree with the arguments you are presenting. I didn't see anything so technically flawed with the film...it was a fast paced narrative, with a lot going on in the story, the frames...I didn't see any flaws in the direction...not sure where that is coming from given how beautifully shot many of the frames were...example:

And this shot is a vintage KJo/Yash Chopra kind of shot...with the expressions beautifully captured

Your argument seems to be that the actors blissfully acted their way through the movie and KJo ke hone, na hone se unhein koi farak nahin padta😆...if there was no KJo to capture their expressions properly, what good would any of that great acting do? It's a team effort.

Improvisations are great but they don't take away from the fact that the director is still the captain of the ship at the end of the day and if he's not steering correctly, the whole thing will fall apart.

No one denies that Karan can be very pretentious and pseudo about a lot of things...but the one thing he knows how to present are emotions...he's gone overboard at times...had some hits and misses but ADHM is a significant shift from his generally melodramatic and loudly presented emotions of the past...now it may or may not work for some people, but I didn't really see any indication of him having lost all hold on his craft. If anything, I could see a solid evolution which I found commendable.

Please ! I actually love YJHD. After WUS, the second movie of Ranbir which I watched more than 10 times at least The song, the progress in the story, and of course Deepika as Naina and Kalki's characters - were all too good. ARK the eyecandy was there too 😆.
ADHM, if I get the story first, then I can judge the movie 😳
