Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has opened well at the box office despite the clash with Shivaay. The initial is around 35-40% on average which is actually good if you consider its pre Diwali. The film is being led by the high end multiplexes and some of these even managed to take a 50% start. If it was a normal day it would be putting up a strong first number as city youth has come initially but with pre Diwali its hard to tell how much of the evening audience will come out. The anti Pakistan wave across the country does not seem to have affected the film. There was a similar type of issue when the Shahrukh Khan starrer Dilwale released and markets like North, Central and Gujarat under performed very badly. Here North and Gujarat seem fine while Central was anyway not expected to be good for this type of film. Though the weekend and Monday collections will tell more.
>Shivaay has taken a lower opening at around 25% as its business at multiplexes in most parts of the country is lower than Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. The film despite being an action film is hit much more than Ae Dil Hai Mushkil by pre Diwali as the mass markets remain very low till Monday. The Muslim mass centres in places like UP and Gujarat could have opened better as they are less into Diwali festivities but the film has a name like Shivaay which probably takes some of the audience away in these centres. The film will find it tough going until the audience comes back at these mass centres on Monday and then teh film will need the reports to be good enough to get the full benefit of the big holiday period.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil did good business on day one with 13 crore nett apprx despite it being pre Diwali. The opening in the morning was the third best of the year after Sultan and M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story while the first day collections have come in the fifth highest of the year as due to Diwali festivities the normal evening jump in collections was not there. The film has scored very well in Delhi city and East Punjab even though it is pre Diwali with Mumbai city also doing very well. The best collections are in South India with Nizam / Andhra and Mysore doing excellent business and both getting the third highest opening day figures of the year.
The mass markets of UP, Rajasthan, CP Berar, CI and Bihar are lower and in these markets the film is lower than Shivaay though some of the big centres in these markets like Lucknow, Nagpur and Indore have grossed higher than Shivaay. Looking at which areas have performed best on day one it would normally mean a big jump on the second day for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil as high end multiplexes are having best occupancy but that may not happen as it is pre Diwali. The film will clearly out perform Shivaay over the weekend but even though it will put up a healthy weekend total it is still dependent on how high it can go on Monday.
