Another Poor Year On The Cards - Cumulative Business Down

The year is certain to be another poor one unless Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Shivaay, Befikre, Dangal and the other films become big winners. Business is already down 75 crore from last year from the same point (a week before Diwali). The cumulative nett gross is 1950 crore as against the 2025 crore last year at the same time. This is with a better flow this year and more films getting advantage of tax free but the gain here is probably incorporated into the highest rates in some states as compared to the first half of last year. One real grosser in Sultan and all the other releases struggling to cross even 125 crore nett which is not exactly a huge total total today.

The problem is not that the year again will end with the same cumulative business as last year but its happened three years in a row. The footfalls are looking at a 5% drop as ticket rates have not seen huge gains this year which was also the case last year. The huge problem is that footfalls have dropped 20% since 2013. In that year there were over 34 crore footfalls for Hindi films and this year we will probably just cross 27 crore. It is all about the content being churned out as Hollywood films which are aiming at the same markets have made good inroads in this time since 2013. Only Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan have delivered bigger grossers than The Jungle Book and if we look at non holiday grossers then The Jungle Book is number one beating Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani which is the highest Hindi non holiday grosser.

Wow that's sad. Things are only going to get worse with "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil" flopping. 😭

"The Jungle Book is number one beating Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani which is the highest Hindi non holiday grosser."

Bajirao mastani is the highest grosser with a clash.Khan films included.

Piku is also highest alternate hit..though BOI slyly added Barfi, which had a mainstream hit director, songs and superstars RK and PC😆

It is very important that ticket prices come down so that people are encouraged to go to cinemas to watch a movie and it is not too expensive an affair. The price is forbidding for metros to watch a film which is from the main money comes. Regional cinema ticket prices are much lower. Tamil, Telugu, Malaylam, Bhojpuri cinema are all doing very well.
There is also a huge number of people watching BW films but all of them online. Instead of watching pirated version of films BW should find a way to monetize this at a nominal fee. They will make a lot of money from this.
Also now suddenly I find premieres of movies happening within a month of a movie's release. Pink is already up for telecast next week when its still playing in cinemas in my city. Why would I go to cinemas to watch a movie if I can wait a month and watch it on TV? So either charge a bomb and have the satellite premiere along with the theaterical release or delay the satellite premiere for much later.
And yes we need better content and more stars. The content is becoming better in general but if BW just treats starkids as their talent pool I am afraid BW wont last beyond the end of the Khan era once they slow down due to age and health related issues.

Salman balances well...he does 1 movie in one year and 2 movies the next. If he does too many he will become another Akshay.
