WASHINGTON -- The White House today stopped accepting signatures for a petition that sought to designate Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism, saying it has been archived as it did not meet the "signature requirements".

The announcement by the White House comes days after the petition gained a record half-a-million signatures, five times the number needed to get a response from the Obama Administration.

"Closed petition", said the petition page.

"This petition has been archived because it did not meet the signature requirements. It can no longer be signed," the White House explained.

No further explanation has been given by the White House on closing the petition for signature.

what a poor piece of journalism !!!

by scrap what they meant- it has been archived, and signatures are being investigated to make sure no mass signature machines were used and each signature is genuine.

it has received the highest number of signatures ever received for any petition and is a record.

it is based on a bill that is being brought out by congressmen to formally designate Pakistan a State sponsor of Terrorism

the petition and bill except for being on the same topic , has no other relation

the petition however requires the highest chair in the country to simply comment on it
A petition has no legal after effects

it is just a measure to understand the raging topics that concerns American Citizens, a populist tool, and very very crucial before elections !!!

"Congressman Ted Poe and Dana Rohrabacher introduced a bill in the US House of Representative, seeking to designate Pakistan as a State Sponsor of Terrorism.

It met the threshold of 100,000 signatures in less than a week. With various groups both inside and outside the US actively campaigning on the social media for people to support the petition, the signature count increased at a fast pace, sometimes more than 100,000 signatures in less than 24 hours.

In the process, it became the first-ever petition to cross half a million mark. A day after it was closed for signature, the final count as of now stands at 665,769 signatures. "

Another arTicle BLOOMBERG

Another possibility could be that the petition was flooded with signatures. And since the petition had already reached the mandatory threshold of 100,000 to earn a response from the Obama administration, a decision could have been taken to archive it and stop accepting any new signature.

The White House is expected to have an official response to the petition within stipulated 60 days.

Meanwhile, the White House is still looking for signatures that did not meet the criteria for the petition which was created on September 21 by someone who identified himself with the initials R G, after Congressman Ted Poe and Dana Rohrabacher introduced a bill in the U.S. House of Representative, seeking to designate Pakistan as a State Sponsor of Terrorism.

It met the threshold of 1,00,000 signatures in less than a week. With various groups both inside and outside the U.S. actively campaigning on the social media for people to support the petition, recording more than 1,00,000 petitioners signing the document in less than 24 hours at times.

It became the first-ever petition to cross half a million mark. A day after it was closed for signature, the final count as of now stands at 6,65,769 signatures.

While there is no official ranking of popular petitions, the one seeking "charges against the 47 U.S. Senators in violation of the Logan Act in attempting to undermine a nuclear agreement" in April 2015 appears to be the second most popular petition with 3,20,000 signatures.

According to a website - WHpetitions.info - that keeps track of unanswered petitions, 323 White House petitions have met their signature thresholds so far.

The White House has responded to 318 of them (98 percent) with an average response time of 117 days. Average waiting time so far for five unanswered petitions is 36 days. This does not include the latest petition.

Baloch-Americans have also launched their own petition on "Free Balochistan from Pakistan's illegal occupation".

Mrs.Khan, even if Indian, has been visiting Dawn.com too much it seems. It's a record breaking petition which has reached its threshold in such a short time that they just want to check for the legitimacy of the signatures. I'm sure 100,000 out of the 660,000 will certainly be legit. It's certainly not 'Scrapped'.

That said, petitions won't decide who goes on the US's terrorism list so it's a futile exercise IMO.

NEW DELHI: In a damning indictment of Islamabad, protesting residents of Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) said their lives have been made a living hell by the presence of terrorist training camps thriving in the area, ANI reported.

Comments made by residents of Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Chinari, Mirpur, Gilgit, Diamer and Neelum Valley, in PoK - who protested there today - have given the lie to Islamabad's pronouncements denying the existence of such camps and the Pakistani state's support for them.

"Banned organisations, terror camps are provided food and ration here, we condemn it," a local leader in Muzaffarabad, PoK, told ANI. Another local, from the Gilgit area, said that "if management doesn't end Taliban's terror camps and 'no-go' areas in Diamer, Gilgit, Baseen and others, then we'll take action."

Last week, India conducted surgical strikes on seven terrorist launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC) in PoK. Commandos killed at least 38 terrorists there. Pakistan has continued to deny any surgical strikes took place.

PoK residents also said "terrorism needs to be eliminated (as) giving shelter to terrorists won't solve the issue.

@Willy and Guesswho: Thanks for clarifying. I was told that based on this petition USA will declare Pakistan a terrorist state and the article made it seem that White House stopped it.
The article is infact from an Indian site:

Counter petition seeking state sponsor of terrorism' tag on India submitted to White house

The current tensions between India and Pakistan have reached the White House cyberspace, with two petitions being filed against both the countries and seeking response from the Obama Administration.

The White House has stopped accepting signatures for one of the petitions that sought to designate Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism', days after it gained a record half a million signatures which is five times the number needed to get a response from the Obama Administration.

Another petition claiming that India is "involved in spreading terrorism in its adjoining countries" has been submitted on the White House website.

The petition, filed against Pakistan, has been archived as it did not meet the "signature requirements", the White House said on Monday.

"Closed petition," said the petition page.

"This petition has been archived because it did not meet the signature requirements. It can no longer be signed," the White House said.

No further explanation has been given by the White House on closing the petition for signature.

Normally, it is open for a month for the people to sign.

However, it looks like that some of the signatures might not have met the terms of participation for these petitions.

As a result, it is very well possible that some of these signatures could be removed if there is evidence of fraud.

But the White House is expected to have an official response to the petition within the 60 days' deadline.

The petition was created on September 21 by a person who identified himself by initials RG and the petition needed 1,00,000 signatures in 30 days to get a response from the White House.

The benchmark was reached in less than a week, and in less than two weeks, the petition crossed half a million signatures.

The petition comes after Congressman Ted Poe, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Terrorism, along with Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, introduced H R 6069, the Pakistan State Sponsor of Terrorism Designation Act in the House of Representatives.

Pakistani-Americans are now campaigning for a signature campaign to support the anti-India petition on the White House website.

"India is involved in spreading terrorism and in bloody proxy wars against its adjoining countries, particularly Islamic Republic of Pakistan," the petition alleged.

The petition, which was created in September by an individual who identified himself with initials SS, has received nearly 64,000 signatures. It needs another 36,000 signatures to become eligible for getting a response from the Obama Administration.

Karachi, Oct. 6: Pakistan's army chief, General Raheel Sharif on Thursday urged the world community to condemn the "distortion of facts" by India regarding Kashmir and the Line of Control (LoC).

Addressing a passing out parade of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) cadets, General Sharif said, "We have recently witnessed an unfortunate display of utter desperation playing out inside occupied Kashmir and along the Line of Control through a litany of falsehood and distortion of facts by India."

"We expect the international community to condemn Indian insinuations and fabrications about a nation that has made unparalleled contributions to the global fight against terrorism," I totally agree with this statement,
