Hey Sonali, nice topic.......

One thing, to teach or learn history; films, documentary, serials are the best options rather than books. (Books are best for those who go research in History).

Ok I think ,whether to make a film or serial, depends on the story u have choosed. How much relevant data is available? Proofs available? How big the story of particular person or era is?

Like say for example Mahabharat or Ramayan: We have lots and lots of material for it. Also each character has a long story. Its not possible to make a film on topic Mahabharat, bcoz u cannot show every detail available. So going for a serial is the best option. Also Shivaji's story is so vast, I hope someone starts a serial on him instead of film.

For stories like Bhagat Singh: Story is not that big, so serial will hardly have 100 episodes. So film is the best choice here. Also Mughale Aazam, Akbar.

For Prithvi Raj: Serial is the best option becoz there r many small stories which cannot be covered in 3 hrs film and it won't give that effect which serial ll give. Also Sequel option is fine. Like harry potter series (PRC and Khajana Khoj, PRC and yatra, PRC and Swayamvar). And In Sagars DKVY-PRC they added masala for only one reason- to extent the role of lead actors. Otherwise they were going acc to history.

nice topic
i think i agree with pallo that history can be shown through any medium. whether u make a serial or documentary, many points may not be true. many times in documentaries, everything covered is true but certain points may just be the views of many historians. so i feel making a historical serial is perfectly fine..the length does not really matter that much to me 😃

exactly...there are lots of things in PRC which are fictional...the whole of koteshwar yatra...the whole "nandini" thing..sanyo getting in danger continuously and prithvi saving her...prithvi finding medicine for suraj...and the list goes on!

for a historical serial, having so much fictional material is dangerous..and also very contradictory towards the purpose of a historical serial. as viewers, we are inclined to believe whatever is shown onscreen is true, simply because of the label of it being a HISTORICAL serial into which 10 years have research has been done.

i mean think about it..a historical serial that has things MADE UP by the maker...doesnt make too much sesne to me..

and since serials are generally expected to last quite long...i dun think serials are a good medium

in fact through a movie, a film maker cud cover all the main aspects of prithviraj's life with great detail...the tales that have passed from generation to generation..they could bring them to life by depicting them in a colourfully in a movie..with songs and all..that would be wow...and being a movie, it wud receive more importance than a serial..

also, a trilogy is another option. if one single movie is not enough, film makers could make three: 1.) prithviraj's birth to gurukul 2.) prithviraj's teens 3.) adulthood to death rather than making a whole serial and making up most of the things in it

nice topic sonali...
as a viewer i have a lot of interest in history. You cannot show every detail in 3 hour movie. You can make movie on Gandhiji,Jfk...and many more but you cant make movie on PRC,vikramaditya, mahabharat. As far as the serial is concer normally they follow the history perfect xample is tipu sultan, mahabharat, chanakya but in PRC they added masala because of the lead actor.I think serial is the better option for the stories of great kings of India

True Sonali. I mean it confused me I can imagine how much it would have confused people who have never read Prithviraj Chauhan's history in their text books. For instances NRI brought up outside India.

True! A good example is the movies on Gandhi. While the movie Gandhi covered Gandhiji's whole life it seemed insufficient. Whereas the movie Gandhi My Father concentrated on Gandhiji's relationship with his eldest son Harilal. It was an objective movie and didnt take sides. Now thats what I call is a ideal historical film.
