Bollywood life article The Tannishtha Chatterjee incident has once
again put the spotlight on the prejudice of dark
skin in the country. The actress who went on
Comedy Nights Bachao Tazaa for a roast' was
subjected to a number of jokes that made fun of
her skin tone. Humiliated, the lady vented her
feelings on a social platform and has been talking
on debates since then. Tannishtha is a well-
known actress on the festival circuit.
BollywoodLife did a quick recce and found out
that Erica Fernandes was presently the only
leading lady on TV who is a dusky beauty. The
former Miss India contestant plays Sonakshi Bose
in the hugely loved show, Kuch Rang Pyar Ke
Aise Bhi. Erica is extremely pretty with her height,
sharp features and natural grace. When
BollywoodLife asked her about her opinion in the
Tannishtha Chatterjee matter, she said, "Honestly,
I was never discriminated against because of my
skin tone. I have been working in the glamour
industry for a long time and have never faced any
humiliation for my skin tone. I would not be a
part of it if I found it racist."
However, the lady agrees
that there is a certain amount of prejudice. "I feel
people should stop looking at skin tone and
appreciate people the way God has made them.
Yes, I have also heard about my colour in hushed
tones but our fans who love Dev and Sona are
least bothered about what my complexion is.
Their love proves that such thinking is archaic
and stupid," she says.
Talking about comedy shows, Erica says, "I have
noticed that comedy shows across the world tend
to insult people. It happens in India but also in
the West. I feel makers should understand that
you can make people laugh even without insulting
someone. Humour goes beyond taking inspiration
from prejudices. It is not in good taste. And if
people are poking fun at others, they should start
off by making fun of themselves."

So, is the onus with writers or comedians?
"Frankly, I am too new to the industry to
comment on it. Yes, it is not right to insult
people. The team should be on the same page.
And awareness is a must," she signs off.
