I guess that's why they are thinking, that hey, since we have these fun/party songs, why not just promote the movie with that?! and not worry about showcasing the serious script and the story line in the trailer. And it works to a certain extent, at least for the opening profit when the audience first goes to see it, but then the biggest factor jumps in which is WOM, and if you don't have that in your favor then even the movies with greatest superstars fall through. I think that's why all this hype and songs are not that useful to indicate the movie's success in today's time because once you have a negative WOM, you are done for! It wasn't like that in the 2000's so much as it is today.

+1
And this movie invited negative WOM by catering to wrong audience. Negative WOM started pouring immediately after FDFS.. even fickle fans canceled their plan to watch the evening shows after seeing negative WOM.

Who was the audience they were catering to? And who should they have catered to?
I am confused by the poor opening day of the film.

100% agree with the bolded sentence! It's unfortunate how silly marketing mistakes like this end up becoming such big blunders! These people need some marketing 101 classes where they need to learn to never fool the audience, show upfront what their product is all about so their it will reach the right customers/audience, otherwise the product is bound to fail when it is directed towards the wrong audience.

The whole party songs and the tone of the trailer is light, extremely light it seems for the movie seems to have been serious! so, I guess the tone needed a turn a bit darker and the marketing needed to take off from there, unless the script is entirely stupid anyways! You can just tell how wrong the marketing was if people came to watch for the kala chasma song and left disappointed with the movie because it wasn't the romantic comedy they expected according to the songs.

I think opening being average to poor is okay, if the word of mouth picks up and it's a positive word of mouth, then the movie is set to go, but then for that you need a good script and good actors to carry it.

Trailer songs and promos catered to - Those buddhe/tharkis who wanted to watch Kala Chashma in the middle of the movie, not at the end (A k a single screen audience) And the wedding movie lovers (Those who watch HSKD, DDLJ 20 times in theaters)

This was a typical Excel movie.. should have only catered to the audience who like Excel movies or K&S type movies by making a different type of trailer... spotlighting the trailer and promos more than the lively/fun songs.

Morning/noon show occupancy dull bhi hota toh itni damage nahi hota.. jitna cheated audience aur Black Heart Ajay ke reviewers ke negative WOM se hua. Movie single screen audience ke liye nahin banaya gaya toh single screens mein release kyun kiya? Which one looks better? 1200 theaters with 70-80% occupancy? Or 2400 theaters with empty single screens?

Content-wise, this movie had the potential to make 6-8 crore... just like K&S. And it did make 6.5 or 7 ..forgot the actual number. As I said before, some people (fickle audience who follow herd) canceled their plan to catch the evening shows because of negative WOM.
WOM follow this pattern... first few shows WOM positive toh rest will be positive... first few shows WOM negative toh rest negative. As Billa always says... In a thread on BW forum.. all members start saying the same thing what the first 3-4 comments on the thread said.

So they should have sold it like say Talaash. But the issue was the cost. Should have controlled it by shooting in India.
In any case K&S had good writing and performances. But BBD lacked it and it might have still gone the same way even with the right marketing.

Off Topic:
I think Salman has been promoting his (last few)movies wisely...

- He mostly spends his promotion budget on moistening Anupama type senior reviewers eyes. (Can you imagine.. some of the reviewers praised even PRDP!)

- Songs are always on TV, so everyone knows his movie is coming.

- Goes only to the high TRP shows on TV.

- Creates any controversy (not related to his movies) before release so that he doesn't need to go to shitty YT/FB type interview shows.. like Faridoon/Malini etc. He can give them excuse that he's avoiding interviews because of the controversy.. sometimes he sends his heroine/director/music composer/singers instead. These shitty shows are like double edged sword... gaye toh sab bolenge ke desperately promote kar raha hai har jagah... nahi gaye toh negative publicity jhel ne padenge site owners ke taraf se (Anyone remembers Faridoon's rant before and after Bang Bang release?)

***

Deepu also promotes herself during her movie release very wisely... Keeps on inviting VIPs and special people on special screenings throughout the week... After the movie release, no one expects praising tweets from a Simi Garewal or a Khushwant Singh on Wednesday, Thu, Fri or Sat... But when you see a Simi Garewal praising Deepu after 5-6 days after the release.. you feel abhi tak praise kar rahe hai log! Acting zaroor dhaasu kiye honge/Movie mein dum hai, Boss!

I also feel last few movies help or go against a film. Like Rustom got average reviews but public ignored them completely and went to see the movie of the star of films like Airlift, Special 26 etc. Likewise BB has helped Salman a lot. Like a non fan like me is interested in Tubelight. If he had continued to do movies like Kick I wouldn't be interested. Sid and Katrina's last few movies were unimpressive. Sid had K&S but it benefitted Fawad. Katrina's last film which she benefitted from was ETT. Other movies like Dhoom3, JTHJ, BB didn't benefit her much.
