Hola Peeps!
Am mostly a silent member... Happened to find about the show about a week or two back and since then have watched most of the episodes, not necessarily in their telecasted order though. :)
Anyway, long story short - the posts on the forum had me thinking if Shravan and Suman were actually behaving out of actor, afterall? ... My reason to post today is to not talk about whether Suman and Shravan are degrading themselves or are the creatives taking away the essence of this story... Rather I want to understand what you interpreted of the following scenes(these are just randomly ordered, not necessarily in chronological order) specially with the way current track is progressing. I know I might be asking your opinion on things you've possibly written reams and reams about.. But would still want to hear what you think of these questions:
  • Shravan's first scene in his bedroom where he says he does not remember sumo: but right after that we see the guy noticing the odd book and remembering sumo's behavior just before he left for london. He has not seen her in 10years, has not spoken a word.. Yet feels and is aware of that girl's presence even in a crowd of 100... Did you think Shravan was not aware of Sumo's presence in the room? Did he not say that intentionally to hurt her.. to make her feel his pain when she would disregard their friendship in public?
  • Shravan's memories of events from his past life specially his parent's separation: Every kid holds his parents in highest regard. I doubt any of us would tolerate the fact that someone is disrespecting or badmouthing our parents, nomatter even the slightest amount of truth to the conent. Shravan was only a teen when his parent separated. An age when every hurt is pronounced, every joy is double and every incident is marked in our memory. He remembers clearly his father and mother arguing. He remembers incidents when his father was a hands-on parent and his mom was an absentee one. The reasons, we understand as audience but to a kid, what has been a constant is his father. Was Nirmala not selfish to leave Shravan? No matter how difficult it was to stay with Ramnath but didnt she have any responsibility towards shravan and owe her son even the briefest/tiniest possible explanation. I get Ramnath blocked her attempts, threatened her but still the fact remains that she abandoned her son and that gave Ramnath opportunity to feed lies to his son. He had his own insecurities and fear. He didnt want his son to leave him and go with a mother who he thought and she actually did move in with a successful mentor/boss. So I dont blame Ramnath or Shravan.. The kid got abandoned in teenage in india, a place where its taboo.. Imagine a teenager's hurt/pain/angst for being left behind...isnt it natural in such a case to put blind trust in your parent, your only support system? So dont you feel that its right for shravan to go ahead with this marriage just to keep his father's word to his teacher/mentor, inspite of his reasons to steer clear of suman and her mess?
  • Shravan's words to sumo even on the day she came to talk to him after nanu's idea of getting them married: ofcourse he used rude words..he was mean, condescending and downright cheap. But one thing we got to remember is the kind of hurt/rejection he has faced all his life and why he is says what he says. He has a whole lot of baggage...He had fighting parents, he had a friend who would not acknowledge him in public.. Would even humiliate him.. Then he had his mother leave and he "saw" her with a rich man and Sumo continued in her teenage rash/uncaring behavior... He has faced rejection time and time again from sumo in his teenage life.. So much so that he left the country.. He comes back, tries avoiding her, situations put them together and she follows him... Implores him to trust her time and again... When he starts doing that..she again breaks it by bringing Nirmala...(even if by mistake, but Sumo WAS wrong in deciding for shravan).. she does apologise and shravan softens... By now the teenage love is back and possibly doubled in intensity.. And for whatever reasons, sumo again starts her rash/uncaring/blow-hot-blow-cold behavior... That is again a rejection for shravan... call it bad luck for these two or whatever that shravan's unfounded jealousy for sumo-adi relationship becomes a reality.. The boy had dropped enough hints to sumo.. Yes, sumo was bound by her promise to ramnath and later to her nanu.. But that is not known to him... He saw his girl getting "almost" married... And yet she didnt show any remorse for the pain that shravan was feeling.. Dont you think Suman should have been humane enough to spare Shravan of such heartache specially when she knew of his love and why he had called her to that cafe that day? Yes, ramnath asked for a promise but didnt her friendship deserve any importance/respect for her to try and lessen shravan's hurt? He sees rejection, he sees hurt and pain each time he associates with sumo... And she went on to marry a practical stranger and for whatever shravan knows she accepted monetary help from adi in form of pct while rejecting him...so why should shravan want to invite pain to his life... Dont you think he might feel that this girl's first choice was aditya.. She didnt come to me herself or out of love... Her family *thinks* we're in love but she denies it... And she has given me enough heartbreak for this lifetime.. So why should I soften towards her or marry her?... Not like she loves me or I can trust her, coz she gives me hope and then makes me hopeless.. So why go through that pain again. He only verbalizes the interpretation of the picture that sumo and ramnath have painted infront of her... Just coz she didnt marry doesnt mean she chose shravan over aditya.. Aditya luckily happened to misbehave with her before wedding or else she would have been married to that douchebag...in distress she ran to him but dont you think for shravan he is still feels only rejection by sumo? Its like if you are explicitly rejected by a partner and then later that partner wants to marry you or be in a relationship with you, you wont want to be with them coz you dont want to be their second choice or you somehow cannot trust this person's ulterior motives.
  • Shravan's drinking scenes: each time he drinks we get a glimpse of the amount of hurt he carries... he speaks his heart then... He feels his dream of a life with sumo is no more his dream... His only anchor is his father.. And he feels his father has been manipulated... So even though he feels he is putting himself up for a bigger heartbreak and bigger sacrifice by marrying suman who didnt choose him in the first place, he agrees to it... He says he can never trust any woman.. And it is kind of true from his view point.. Women in his life have not really cared for his pain/hurt.. Have never kept him as their prime.. All along he has been used and thrown... So dont you think his drunken outbursts are still true to the character? What has sumo done so far since the cafe incident to make him change his view on women?
  • Suman's optimism about this marriage: suman's dream has been to have shravan as life partner. Of all her reasons to say yes, the reason that she trully loves shravan has been the prime-most. After having lost all hopes of being with shravan, things have magically aligned for her to get her the love of her life - shravan. The only person who she truly thinks is hers and the person with whom she might have thought of an ideal life with. Its almost like when we get whatever has been our biggest wish, even though we get it partially, we do become happy.. In our euphoria we forget to see the hurdles or not-so-perfectness of the situation... We try to make do the best with whatever is available... Dont you feel Sumo is in that phase as well...? Shravan has been mad at her in past too... But in past she had succeeded in bringing him back so dont you think thats her reason for her hope/hapiness? Also, so far, Shravan has been rude to her many times and his reasons have been very apparent to her...even this time..she knows it was her fault that shravan was having a hertbreak during the aditya phase and that he misunderstood the whole pct fiasco with aditya.. She is hopeful she'll be able to clear up these "little" issues( she terms it little but for shravan they are Mt. Everest sized issues) and hence happy.
  • Sumo's decision to sacrifice for preeti and then nanu and now mami : she always sacrifices shravan and his happiness for her people... Not sure how and why but her decisions have always had big impacts on shravan's life... in all her niceness, she has always kept shravan as the last one in her priority list...she has always been a bit selfish to keep her people above shravan, for whatever reasons... So wasnt it wrong on sumo's part to decide for both of them all by herself all this while? She made a decision that shravan should meet nirmala, she made a decision that distance from shravan would be good for shravan and she made the decision that marrying aditya will not hurt shravan...was she not wrong?
  • Shravan's non-realization of his fault in adi-sumo fallout: the guy has been operating on jealousy, heartache, alcohol and hatred since almost a month... He is like this freight train hurtling down the hill having lost its control on breaks...why would he stop to think? Things have happened without a day's respite... Not like there has been any cooling off in between to gather thought, introspect etc etc... People blinded by jealousy, heartache and hatred seldom stop to think or introspect until again at peace...so not sure why people exepect shravan to even remember what he has done with aditya.. Ofcourse he will repent... But they say the greater the fall, the bigger the remorse... And Sumo has always been his anchor, he has been rudderless for quite sometime to even figure where he was heading, maybe the wedding will bring that anchor back... I doubt anyone has talked much about the aditya incident as such. Do you think shravan in is dispair, hopelessness, dejection and hatred has even had a time to think? Also, what would be the trigger to his realization?

Well written. Puts a lot of things in perspective.

I guess sometimes we react badly to a scene because we see both side of the picture but the characters are only aware of part if the same information.

Shravan has been wronged by Sumo multiple times, per shravan. Some have been intentional some unintentional.
Sumo wanted to be secret friends with shravan in her teenage life whereas teenage shravan adored her, loved her and cared for her. She ignored, insulted and belittled him in public, although all that she did as a teenager and she regrets it as an adult.
Shravan left for london after being hurt by 2 people that he cared for the most - nirmala and Sumo. He comes back but has not forgotten about sumo's insult. He avenges that by belittling her in a school reunion party infront of all those same friends. Situations keep throwing them together, and they both regret their actions, apologise and patch up as adults and become close friends again..sumo again hurts Shravan by trying to patch shravan with nirmala. Although she has good in tentions but for shravan it was a break of trust, again. They have a bunch of fights where shravan too hurts sumo. They again patch up and shravan by now knows his teenage love is for real..it was not an infatuation. Ramnath, however, hates suman for having tried to patch up shravan and nirmala. He knows shravan loves suman but he thinks sumo is like nirmala and would hurt shravan the way nirmala hurt him. He blackmails sumo to keep away from shravan or preeti's marriage is at stake. She does that and hurts shravan immensely. Amidst all this, aditya makes like difficult for both of them and causes more misunderstandings and shravan thinks sumo disses shravan but takes that same help from aditya... Thus repeating her childhood behavior where she gave everyone importance over him in school... Situations go bad further when sumo and adi's marriage is announced... Shravan thinks sumo has cheated him for he thinks his love has been very obvious...it has been obvious but sumo is bound by promises to ramnath and her nanu... She goes and "almost" gets married to aditya inspite of shravan's heartbreak and pain... Aditya misbehaves right beforethe rituals and beaten black n blue by shravan... Sumo is thankful to shravan but does not know shravan's false instigations caused aditya's nastiness to come to fore.. Shravan does not know reasons for sumo's change of behavior is Ramnath's doing and in part her nanu's fault.. He pours his heart infront of Ramnath but Ramnath does to tell him about sumo's promise..instead he instigates him... Shravan feels sumo is marrying him for her family... And also that she has so far not cared for his feelings, she chose aditya over him and rejected him repeatedly, hence he feels he is setting himself up for more heartbreak from sumo and thats why he is doing all this for his father. Basically he does not trust her to love him back if he tells her he loves her.

I have reached a point with Shravan where his misogyny is too caustic for me to be able to empathize with his state. I mean, I get all his motivations and Namik has been acing it with him, so we are constantly aware of the deep pits of hell Shravan is truly in, but... the relentlessly disgusting dialogues, man. I can't figure if they are really, truly needed. Do we really need to hear such awful words? I feel that Shravan's deep sense of betrayal and his spiraling are points that the narrative has made with the effect of a sledgehammer and it just. won't. stop. His '4 types of women' speech would have been enough, but it just keeps getting worse and worse, and it's getting a point where the weight of the ugly words are burying the character too deep under, for me.

So, I'll talk about the character I can still see, with her warts and all. It might seem like Sumo constantly puts the other people in her life over Shravan, but I see it as her putting the people she is indebted to over herself. Shravan is her dream, he is her happiness, and every time the choice is between one of her creditors and Shravan, she chooses the former, because it won't be paying off debt if she chooses her happiness over theirs, right? Choosing Shravan means choosing herself, and she owes it to Preeti, to Mami, to Nanu, never to choose herself . Obviously, in this romanticism, she fails to look at Shravan as well...an actual person. Even after his actions, and his words, and the constant glimpses he allows her of the true state of his heart, of the deep sense of insecurity he lives with, she views and judges him from a decade old lens (this is true for Shravan too, btw). The bright side of this is none of his ugly words or actions ever stick, because Sumo knows her Shravan, and as soon as he so much as shows her a glimpse of her chashmish superman, all of the anger and the grievances just disperse off. Like Suman said, wo mayne nahi rakhte. But the down side of it has accumulated in to the mess that we have in our hands right now. Her Shravan, the Shravan of the yore, just gave all of him to Suman unconditionally (He still does, of course. But not in a way Suman understands). She loves him, he is her world as much as she is his, and she knows the real him, but she just rejects the darkness that has made house in him in the past decade. Doesn't understand it, refuses to acknowledge it. As a result, the expectations are always sky high. So while she distanced herself from him, he was supposed to just get her, put together bits and pieces even though she was leaving behind no clues from him, because duh, that's her Shravan. Her Shravan obviously got drowned in the feelings of rejection and betrayal, and she still has no idea how to judge or even view who he has become now.

Honestly, I am very excited to see where the creatives take it with the marriage, because it would mean that they would have no respite from each other to step back and fall in their usual patterns, they won't get the time and space fictionalize each other as per their convenience like they constantly do, but but but...ugh, the ugly words. I can't watch Shravan spewing more vicious bs about Suman, and I really, really don't have it in me to see him attempting to toe Suman in line with his image of an ideal woman', it would just be a wee bit too vile to digest.

Appleblossom... Sooo beautifully put together... Sumo takes shravan for granted and wants him to get her reasons..without making it obvious and apparent..
Shravan's acidic words for women in general...
I get he uses words n behaves like one BIG MCP... But you got to see from his lenses... When did even a single woman think of his interest, put him over and above themselves..never... Yes he uses the harsh words only to sumo... But thats coz she gave him that impression all along... Her actions have been reject shravan, be curt to shravan, blast shravan ... And to add to that nirmala has added fuel to that fire between shravan and suman... Nirmala was supported by sumo at one point of time... That same nirmala who left him and then expected shravan to back off from sumo's life for her other son's happiness... That lady selfishly "asks" shravan to do things as if she has a right over him... Shravan consciously or subconsciously only offloads on suman all his grievances and frustrations... And in a way suman is reason why he gets all that hurt...so think of it from the persoective of a person who has lived all his life( the years he has clear and conscious memory of) with all the hurt, rejection and misery... Why would he not continue to believe it.. He hasnt been proved wrong even once after that "4 types of women" comment... Nirmala did her atyachaar asking fr aditya's happiness, suman said he is not "important" enough in her life to make marriage decisions based on his thoughts... So why wont he spit acidic words.. I know I dont like belittling of women, trophy wife comments, or gold digger comments... But his mother and sumo have given him just that impression all along... And as they say actions speak louder than word... Why couldnt he sumo cleared shravan's misunderstanding of adi-sumo pct deal...that was not related to ramnath's promise.. Why couldnt sumo tell him about nanu's promise for marriage with adi, that was not something that would have outed ramnath... It was truth, a plain caught-in-circumstance situation... Atleast it would have assuaged "some" of shravan's heartache..
We give too much leeway to sumo just coz she is a woman, a girl and in india women are not generally respected so we do all in our capacity to up the woman's stature n character as much as we can, since she is "one" of us... But sumo has immensely wronged shravan from where I see it... And each time a person is hurt, they look at history...and history shows sumo following a pattern.. Keeping everyone over and above shravan... Shravan hates that nature of suman...

Also, shravan sees sumo as his equal... He cant go rant that to chachi... That would be badtameezi... Talking that way to elders ... Plus he doesnt "want" to say or show his hurt to nirmala for he thinks she did all that Consciously...

lildreams Sumo and Shravan both have their faults, and they both have been wronged by each other at various points in their lives, and just like Shravan's misdemeanor won't justify Suman's lack of understanding or empathy towards him, Suman's actions don't justify his words or his actions. While I am a bit too tired of Shravan's misogyny to be able to see him clearly, I view it as a defense mechanism. The two women who meant the most to him failed him, so he blames it on the gender to rationalize the rejection. His mother left him because women are awful, Sumo betrayed him because that's what women do, viewing their actions in isolation would make his hurt too real to even deal with, he is barely managing anyway. It's a survival tactic, basically. But while I respect your view, I really don't agree with you saying that Shravan is justify to his point of view because no woman in his life has proved him wrong, I really don't think the onus is on any woman to make him change his views. He is a well-educated adult who has chosen to generalize his life experiences and stereotype 50% of the world's population, it is not anyone's responsibility to prove his ignorance wrong. It is a lesson that he will come to him when the many truths of his life are revealed to him. I am just scared the CV's are taking it a slight bit too far before we reach that glorious point in the story.
