I think we know what happens when a movie is not promoted well even with a big star like SRK in it. Promotions should happen but not to the extent of creating controversies.But all matters only for 1st weekend and then it is WOM.
But if it not promoted at all then hardly people will go even on 1st 3 days.
Trailer also matters like in case of BV where it was heavily promoted but still nobody went to watch it.
