CHAPTER 66

"Is the Prime Minister coming, Sunheri? That you are nervous," Mohini snapped at her daughter who was pacing in the aangan. She quickly shook her head. She didn't want to reveal the surprise which will definitely make her bhabhisa happy. She had texted him hours ago. And asked Maithili bhabhisa to make something special too.

"Mohini, is dinner ready? Bhaisa has to take his medicines," Danveer asked his wife. She glared at him. Their little granddaughter was also waiting which her brother worshiping husband never noticed. He opened his mouth to defend himself but chose not to get into the bad side of her caustic tongue. "Maithili, today you have cooked some many varieties," he turned to his daughter-in-law and remarked. She smiled and took a small portion for her daughter.

The doorbell rang. "I'll get it," Sunheri ran to the door. Mohini tugged her pallu annoyed. Her sixth sense warned her that her daughter was courting trouble albeit unknowingly. "Hello, we wanted to come earlier but he was running late from work," said a soft voice. Paro smiled as she recognized the voice. She rushed forward but felt a hand hold her back. "I'm not planning on sending your guest at the door itself. She can come inside and meet you," Mohini scolded.

Sunheri escorted Aman and his wife inside unenthusiastically. What happened to her dimpled new friend? The couple greeted the elders of the family before turning to Paro. "We thought you will be feeling low because Rudra sir is away and dropped by. I wanted to come earlier but you know how it is,," Aman explained. His wife indicated to the door. He nodded and went out.

He came back with a large bag and handed it to his sister. "You wanted to knit sweaters and booties before the baby is born, didn't you? So we brought a dozen colors and a pattern book too," Deepa told her. Her face bloomed as she felt the soft wool. She longed to make pretty things for her babies. "I'll go keep this in your room," Aman offered.

He kept the bag near the diwan and walked to the windows. He bolted them shut. He took out his torch and checked under the beds and the dark corners of the room. He took out his phone and shot some pictures. Rudra's face appeared on the screen. "Yes sir, I'm at the Ranavat haveli. I just checked your room. Everything seems to be in order," he reported. He listened for the next instruction with a smile. "Yes Sir, I already took the pictures. I will whatsapp them to you shortly," he replied with confidence.

His looked at the portrait on the wall sadly. She was happiest when he was around. No presents, however dear made up for his absence. "How is your mission going?" he enquired. His face broke into a smile. The mission was wrapped up faster than expected. The major would be back within 24 hours. The second stage of their plan would then start. "Yes sir, the guards have been doubled... Sure sir," he ended the call and rejoined the others.

"So Rudra has commissioned you for the Mission Paro too has he," Dilsher asked him. Aman looked guilty. Mission Paro, the one he knew of wasn't about pampering the woman they all loved but about fishing out the new villain who was after her. He sat down and recollected the last time her life was at risk, this was a million times worse. She was just a witness, someone who would help put away a traitor. He smiled to himself. She was never just a witness. She became his sister the second he knew her name. Maybe he was a sentimental idiot but a indescribable affection was what he always felt for her.

Deepa tried to keep the conversation going but it was getting harder. She hardly knew these people and the matriarch kept glaring. It was as if she had to be silent and let the men talk. She wasn't even sure if she could join them at the table. She just followed Aman who had turned into a statue. She gently pinched him under the table. He flinched.

"Is the curry too spicy, Amansa?" Mohini asked. He shook his head and gave his wife a grateful smile. He had to get his head back in the game. He turned to Paro, "So if Rudra sir isn't back by tomorrow, what are your plans?" She replied that she was supposed to be studying all day but will spend sometime with the knitting book they had got her. Aman was relieved. As long as she stayed in the fortress there wouldn't be anything to worry about.

An hour later, Aman and his wife departed after strict instructions to the guards. For the next 24 hours strangers were unwelcome at the haveli. Dilsher asked Paro to him a cup of tea before calling it a night. Mohini complained to her husband how ill-mannered, city girls were and if Shatabdi was the same when she visited Sumer's associates. Danveer quietly guided her away before she finds fault with all her daughters-in-law.

Samrat saw the morose look on his sister's face. "I thought you will be happy, your surprise worked very well. Paro seemed thrilled," he observed. Maithili carrying Shanti out, stopped in her tracks. She knew how the young girl had a crush on Rudra's second in command. She had assumed that she was over it. Had her old feelings resurfaced?

"Aman bhaisa was Rudra bhaisa's surprise. I invited someone else," Sunheri confessed. Her brother was puzzled. But before he could ask the next question, she rushed to her room. She checked her phone. Was there a missed call? A text? She noticed that the signal strength was week. Maybe he had tried to call for directions. She tiptoed to the terrace.

She remembered him from the party. How he smiled so charmingly at everyone. How sweet he was to the little girl who crashed into him. How he blushed when someone praised him. How polite he was to Parvati bhabhisa. He was unlike anyone she ever knew. She dialed his number. The person you are calling is either switched off or not reachable. She frowned. What happened to him? She looked up to the heavens and prayed that he was okay.

Meanwhile downstairs, Paro was having signal trouble too. Rudra wasn't reachable. She didn't know what to do. Sleep was never easy to come. But the sensible woman in her knew a mother to be needed adequate rest along with good food. "It's just you and me my little one," she told her flat belly. She put back all the toys on the floor in the bag that Shanti had bought. "I'm doing this for you, because you are too little. But you must learn to be responsible and neat. Your Bapusa is a BSD major. He will expect you to be organized," she instructed.

She went to the bed and spread the covers. "Once you have finished your chores. I will sing you a lullaby. Heli maari..." she paused remembering a tortured face. That song was forbidden. The peace it gave her wasn't equal to the pain it caused him, her Rudra. "So what if you can't grow up listening to the songs your father and I grew up listening to. There are there songs in the world too," she reasoned.

Nanha munna rahi hu, desh ka sipahi hu

Bolo mere sang, jai hind, jai hind

Jai hind, jai hind, jai hind

She stopped. "I don't know what comes next. But I promise as soon as my exams are over I will learn the full song. I'm sure you will like it," she decided.

Her glance fell on the bedside where her old doll was placed. She thought for a minute. Then went to the cupboard where Rudra's old toys were kept. She took out an old army truck one that Bapusa said was Rudra's favorite toy before his world turned upside down. He hated any reminder of his childhood but it was time to see things again through his son's eyes. He needed new memories with old things. Who knew maybe he might sing her favorite lullaby to their son someday.

The next day morning Maithili knocked on Sunheri's door before gently opening it. "Baisa, it's time to get up," she exclaimed cheerily. She saw the phone on the bed and picked it up. She noticed that the charge was 1% and plugged it in the charger. "Baisa, get up. You will be late for college," she said. Sunheri's hands fluttered across the sheets. She woke up with a start. "Where is my phone?" she looked about frantically.

Maithili pointed out to the table where it was charging. Her sister-in-law jumped out of bed and rushed to check it. Dimples is now available to take your call said the first message. She wanted to call back. But bhabhisa was looking suspiciously. "I will finish the tea bhabhisa. You should start on breakfast before Maasa scolds," she suggested. But the other woman just started to fold the blanket casually. The newly appointed cook had come early. So she had time to catch up with her favorite sister-in-law. Sunheri was pleased but she needed her space too. "I wanted to eat that chutney you make. I was dreaming of it last night," she lied. Her bhabhisa cupped her face and told her that the chutney will be waiting for her downstairs.

As soon she left, Sunheri locked the door. She didn't want any more interruptions. She found his number and paused. Would it look odd if she called out of the blue? Good morning, she typed and hit send. Within a minute her phone beeped with the reply. She smiled as messages flew back and forth until she was summoned downstairs.

As she packed lunch for het, Paro noticed her sister-in-law's lost expression. "What's going on Sunheri? Are you worried about something?" she asked concerned. Sunheri looked about making sure no one was about. "Bhabhisa, yesterday at the market I ran into your tutor. He offered to come home last night. But your brother and his wife came instead," she admitted. Paro patted her head. It was okay that one surprise got replaced by the other. She was happy with the care and concern showered on her.

"I messaged him in the morning. He replied that he was very sick and had to cancel. He is all alone bhabhisa. He doesn't have anyone," Sunheri explained her distress. Paro felt terrible. Even at her worst moments someone was always with her. "When you come back from college we can go see him if you want," she suggested. Sunheri hugged her. Atleast he would have someone to check up on him. She typed one last message before getting ready.

A few hours later, Paro approached Mohini, "Kakisa, I was wondering if I could go out today." Her aunt looked at her intently, "Why have you decided to run off to Jaipur since Rudra is away because your brother reminded you of your maayka?" She shook her head. She had an errand near Sunheri's college and would be back together.

Mohini wasn't a fool. She could tell when the other person was being secretive. But when the other person was Rudra's wife, she couldn't question. Her nephew had made it crystal clear long ago. She could guide, advise but never order. That was a right nobody possessed. "How are you planning on going?" she asked. Paro replied that her usual driver Natwar Lal would drive her. "Call him?" she instructed.

The roly poly constable appeared within minutes. She handed over the keys to Samrat car, "Be careful and drive slowly." He tool the key with a nod. He knew that the smallest injury to Parvati madam's person would be severely dealt with. He guided her carefully to the vehicle.

Paro was surprised that she could leave so easily. She hoped nobody would get on trouble on her account. "Kakasa, can we stop by the market first?" she asked. The constable's eyes went wide. He couldn't allow a pregnant woman to wander in a busy market. He had to avoid her eyes lest he caves in. He heard her sigh as they crossed the market square. He pulled over to the side and stopped. "Would it be okay if you stay in the car when I make the purchase?" he asked.

Paro smiled. She didn't mind at all. She knew they were under strict orders. But she needed some fruits to visit her sick teacher. She handed him some money and watched him go away. It was never her intention to put him in a spot. Her husband was slipping back to Jallad mode. She had noticed that the number of constables around her had increased. There were new cameras in the common areas of the haveli. She hoped he would relax when he got back. All she wanted was to enjoy this phase of her life without any hassle.

Natwar Lal returned to the car with two full bags. "I bought some Marie biscuits too just in case," he said. He then drove to the college. Sunheri who was waiting at the gate waved to them. "Good thing, you brought something. Maasa says we should never call on someone empty handed," she reminded as she climbed in. The constable waited for her to give directions. She just passed the phone which had the address text. Discreetly, he forwarded the text to Officer Aman before driving off just in case.

They arrived shortly at their destination. A small two floored house with no windows. "What an odd house?" Paro commented as she got out of the car. Sunheri hopped out and took the bags out. She rang the doorbell. Nobody opened. She tried again impatiently. This time it opened slowly by a tired young man.

Shantanu let them in with a week smile. "Sunheri informed that you were ill," Paro started. He just led them to a sofa and replied that it was just the flu. Sunheri looked about and saw the messy kitchen corner and asked if he had eaten anything. "I made some tea. Would you like some?" he offered. The two women shook their head.

He switched on the fan, "I was feeling cold. But it will be stuffy for you both in this heat." Paro looked about the house and noticed a small lamp near the bed. He quickly pulled a curtain which separated his room from general view. "It's not very clean," he apologised. Paro dismissed it. He was sick and so he should focus on getting better.

An awkward silence passed. Sunheri had been sure this was a good idea when she started but her bhabhisa looked too uncomfortable. For Paro the absence of windows was making her queasy. "Even one window is not there?" she inquired. He shook his head. The building was formerly used as a warehouse. The owner converted it into a residence by just replacing the steel shutters with wooden doors. But the rent was cheap so he didn't complain.

In fact this was perfect under the circumstances, he thought to himself. This building would be the spot where he could hold Parvati Ranavat captive without anyone being the wiser. Sunheri had taken the bait innocently. All he had to do was get her out now. He didn't need witnesses.

"We should go and let you rest," Paro said getting up when an alarm rang loudly from behind the curtain. Sunheri jumped startled by the sudden noise. "That's just means its time to take my medicine," he said walking to a table. He poured himself a glass of water and took out a strip. He sighed, "It's empty. The pharmacist said he would send over more. I guess he forgot." Paro felt bad she offered to get it for him before they leave. He shook his head. It was available only at particular shop 2 kms away. "Bhabhisa, you stay here. I will go with Natwarsa and be back before you know it," Sunheri suggested.

Minutes later, Paro sat down after sending her sister-in-law off with her driver. It had taken some convincing for him to leave her alone. But in the end he conceded that Rudra would want his sister to be taken care off too. Her hand moved to her rudraksh as she wondered when he would return.

Suddenly a handkerchief came from nowhere. She tried to scream but the cloth muffled all sounds. She took a deep breathe and tried to push it away. Instead of feeling stronger she felt everything going out of focus. It became very hazy and then dark.

Aman's visit to Paro was nice. It cheered up Paro also helped him to accomplish Rudra's task.
Sunehri is smitten by shantanu's innocent face and believes him. She even takes Paro to his house and then leaves her alone with him. Atleast one good thing is that the driver forwarded the address to Aman. Hopefully they will get to Paro before she gets hurt.

I felt bad too. But was getting tired of keeping Shantanu around and had to go through with this 😳.
Aman is the thoughtful officer and Rudra the rash one 😆 from the beginning right?
Sorry about the delay. Updating now.
I noticed that too Bhavya 😊
