Akira Review Rating: Sonakshi Sinha starrer Akira movie releases on 2nd September 2016. She is back with another main lead Bollywood film this week. It's interesting to see her in new look and she looks rugged as she handles 4 policemen to prove her innocence. Let's catch up Akira movie review.

There are two Bollywood movies releasing this week. One is Akira while the second one is Island City. AR Murugaddos has directed, produced, and co-written the action drama titled Akira. It is the official remake of a Tamil movie Mouna Guru (2011). Being a female-centric flick, Sonakshi Sinha is cast in the lead role while Konkona Sen Sharma, Anurag Kashyap, Teena Singh, and Amit Sadh are in supporting roles. Akshay Kumar, Atul Kulkarni, and Rani Laxmi have their cameos in it. Vishal-Shekhar have given its music while it has been produced under the banner of Fox Star Studios.

Movie Review: The script is more or less similar to the original film from which it has been adapted. However, Murugadoss has tried to make things innovative and bring some uniqueness in it. The film revolves around Sonakshi Sinha who has gone from Bubbly girl to Angry young woman. It's good to see her in a new avatar. However, the film seems to be predictable as most the storyline is the same of the original Tamil movie. So, she hasn't really very much unique. Thus, it becomes an ordinary play for those who have already watched the film or knows about it. It gives too many loo breaks to the audience. However, if you are a fan of Sonakshi, you would love to watch her trying action scenes. On the whole, the story is predictable.

Akira Review- Star performance: The film revolves around Sonkashi, the most of the time. It appreas that the rest of the actors are just for formality. However, some of them have done an excellent job in that short span of screen appearance. Sonakshi steals the show. She has given one of her best on-screen performances. Though she has performed action for the first time, it appeared that she has done it before and looked like an expereinced action hero in the movie. She was impressive with her tight kicks and sharp action sequences. She makes the film worth watching. Other supporting actors have done a good job with their characters. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has done some cool actions making his role a decent one. Akira Review Rating Akira Review Rating Direction, Music and Other elements The direction is fine but it could have been better. The credit goes to the original script. The director could had put more efforts and introduced changes to make it unique and different in terms of direction and filmmaking. The movie has good fine music. Some of the songs are the chartbusters. There was a lot of room for improvement in departments like photography, action, screenplay, and action. On the whole, the film's technicality and other filmmaking elements are good. However, we had expected a lot more from ace director AR Murugadoss. Akira Rating 3/5.

Akira reviewed: Sonakshi slays
Sinha is the one breaking bones, but Anurag Kashyap forms the spine of this Bollywood thriller

Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Senior Reporter
15:34 September 1, 2016

Film: Akira

Director: A R Murugadoss

Cast: Sonakshi Sinha, Anurag Kashyap and Konkona Sen Sharma

Stars: 3.5 out of 5

Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has found an apt way to silence all those who thought that she was prone to acting in varying shades of damsel-in-distress roles. She slays it as Akira, the fierce college student from a dysfunctional modern family, who reluctantly takes on a gang of corrupt police officers in Mumbai.

Akira, directed by A R Murugadoss, is a violent showcase of police brutality and the depths to which dishonest men in uniform will plummet to in order to fill their coffers.

Director-actor Anurag Kashyap, who plays a high-ranking police officer, is pure evil genius. The coke-snorting rogue officer almost yanks the glory from Sinha's adventurous foray into a role of substance.

The scene in which he ruthlessly snuffs out the life of his shady girlfriend is pure gold.

He's unapologetic about his misdeeds and that makes him riveting to watch. Perhaps, producer-director Karan Johar, who tried to act in Bombay Velvet, should take notes.

Sinha is another revelation in Akira. She manages to make us forget Sinha, the star, and gives us a raw, searing portrayal of a woman with zero tolerance for violence against women.

The downside is that Murugadoss employs the usual crutch of over-explaining the Good Samaritan in her.

The scenes that underline her feisty spirit are shamelessly contrived. We are told she's humane because she's kind towards disabled children. Come on, isn't that the oldest spiel in the Bollywood book, to show a woman as a virtuous spirit? (Remember Muragadoss' Ghajini, in which Aamir Khan's character fell in love with Asin because she helped blind children cross the road?). Such scenes designed to manipulate the viewers are unnecessary.

While the first half is thrilling and moves at a fast pace, the second half spirals down a rocky path. The turns are sinister and makes you wonder whether cops can truly get away with multiple murders in Mumbai. You may have to suspend belief to take in some of the haphazard twists in the second half. But it isn't all bad. It's invigorating to see a woman take charge and do what Bollywood heroes have been doing for decades. There's a bit of chest-thumping, but Murugadoss doesn't let it run wild.

Konkona Sen Sharma, who plays a heavily pregnant police officer who is above corruption, doesn't falter. This thriller is a good example of actors doing their job, instead of letting stars and their familiar routines dominate. Despite a few hitches and ridiculous twists, Akira makes for an engaging watch. Some may also have an issue with the way the film tackles mental health, but if you see the big picture the viewers aren't scarred by the film.

Both Sinha and Kashyap keep the film's momentum going with their arresting screen presence.

Director: A R Murugadoss Cast: Sonakshi Sinha, Anurag Kashyap, Konkana Sen, Shatrughan Sinha, Amit Sadh and few others.

PLOT: The story initially, revolves around the life of a hot-head Kumari Akira Sharma (Sonakshi Sinha), who always find it difficult to adjust herself with the society. Owing to her over-aggressive nature, her mother and brother convince her to pursue her higher studies away from her hometown, Jodhpur.
That's how Akira Sharma lands up in Mumbai. For her, controlling anger is next to impossible; and even there, she picks a fight with her hostelmates and ends up in major trouble.
Meanwhile, there is one more character in the film, around the whom the plot of the story revolves. It's the corrupt Police Officer played by Anurag Kashyap, who witnesses an accident along with his Sub-Inspector.
When he is about to take the victim to a nearby hospital, he comes across a huge stash of cash.

Out of greed, rather than helping the victim, he kills him on the spot and flee to Mumbai with the money! Now, how Akira gets stuck in this crime plot and what she does to prove herself innocent, forms the crux of the story!

PERFORMANCES: Let's take a moment to appreciate Sonakshi Sinha's guts to this film. And let us tell you that throughout the film, the lady has shown full confidence in her acting as she knows, she is doing an amazing job! We totally loved the badass avatar of Sonakshi in the film. What amused us the most, is how she excels in different emotional frames like a pro! No need to say that her high-octane action sequences are the major highlights of the film and she sizzles in those frames!
On the other hand, Anurag Kashyap is quite impressive in the film as well and is showing just the kind of menace that is expected from a villain. Konkana Sen, who appears more in the second half of the film, has done justice to her serious character and it's always a delight to see her on-screen!

TECHNICALITIES: While we loved seeing Sonakshi Sinha kicking some serious butts, we can't take away the fact that some scenes were just too exaggerated! There were a few sequences in the film, where we felt that action sequences should have been shot from a woman's perspective.

A R Murugadoss is one talented director and overall he has done a good job in re-launching Sonakshi in a rebellious avatar! However, the plot of the film fails to command our interest at a stretch.

Amidst the shabbily cut scenes, the overdone actions and violence, we feel that the editing team too, lacked crispiness or they didn't do their homework properly! Apart from Anurag Kashyap, songs of the film also play the villain of the film! No matter how serious the storyline is, audience wants a refreshment and here, the songs take a backseat.

VERDICT: No matter whether you are a Sonakshi Sinha fan or not, we suggest you to watch Akira, only and only for her career best performance! More power to you, Sona!

Akira opened to a poor response with collections around the 15% range in the morning shows. The promo of the film had been launched around two months back and nothing else to back the film up since then so it becomes impossible for just a theatrical to hold the film up for two months unless its a superb theatrical and even then you need back up of good songs. Despite being an action film. Akira becomes totally dependent on word of mouth and that is not easy as the growth for an action film tends to be lower than a love story or social film.

The opening of the film is very similar to Sarabjit released a few months back. This film has slightly better occupancy rates generally in the morning but Sarabjit was better in North which means they sort of cancel each other out. Sarabjit had Aishwarya Rai as the face of the film while here it is Sonakshi Sinha. Another comparable film is NH 10 which was actually better in the morning shows but Akira has a wider release than that film.

There were a few other Hindi releases but they are all films that hardly stand a chance. Yea Toh Two Much Ho Gaya released which features Arbaaz Khan and Jimmy Sheirgill. There was also Dark Chocolate which is comeback of Mahima Choudhary who started with the Subhash Ghai directed Shahrukh Khan starrer Pardes. Then there is also Island City, Sunshine Music Tours and Travels and Unformung - The Transformation. The collections of the all the films are practically nothing and looking at the names of the films it is expected. The titles of the films are just ridiculous.
