We have seen many medicore films in Bollywood lately, same ole stuff: A Flying Jatt, Mohenjo Daro, Happy New Year, Bombay Velvet.

Hrithik got paid an enermous amount of money and so did Ranbir Kapoor for Bombay Velvet. Both are limited actors - Ranbir cannot do action films. People often say he's an all-rounded actor, but I don't believe that. He sleep walks through his roles and they are rarely interesting characters. Hrithik plays larger than life characters and can barely play an ordinary man. These actors are paid staggering amount of money but they barely bring in the revenue with their money. I really hope Bollywood directors start making small indie films and we see a change from it. and women get paid more. Maybe script writers should get paid more than Ranbir and Hrithik.

Good post! Agree with everything! Except don't think women getting paid more is going to happen anytime soon...

Why do actors get paid exorbitant amount of money anyway...

Thanks. I still can't believe Ranbir was paid more than Deepika for shit like Tamasha. SRK's career was failing, and if it weren't for Deepika, he would've vanished by now.

Nepotism brings mediocre starkids like Sonam and make them stars when in real life no one cares for them.

While established star command a premium so also followed by few new aka decade old actors of bollywood for their connection which eat away lot of budget. more than anything we have mediocre family business actors aka nepotism just happy with few successful movies relied heavily by exploiting social media and promotion. Bollywood is loosing in competitiveness and slowly its not offering something unique and best movies.

But then Sonam or other untalented starkids haven't given gigantic apocalyptic disasters...its the so-called talented starkids who have destroyed the studios.

The solution is not in just doing away with nepotism but in rationalising investment, production costs and actor fees too. Also directors need to be reined in too who use foreign locales unjustifiably like the Tokyo segment in Tamasha which had no relevance in taking the plot forward or the likes of Rohit Shetty and Farah Khan who just blow up money on gaudy movies. Even SLB is no better despite his aesthetics.

In that aspect I think YRF and Salman's home productions are a step ahead because they mostly shoot in domestic locations without mounting expensive sets, except for the Dhoom series and the Chopra directorials. KJo also seems to be on a learning curve but the Ayan superhero film has full potential to sink his PH. Phantom has also returned to its indie roots...so there is hope that some of these production houses will buck the trend.

Well you have a point. Its the 'talented' starkids who have sunk PHs like Ranbir, HR. I guess the problem is when a starkid has talent then its like the biggest thing on earth.
As for Ayan superhero film...lets see if that really starts off. 😉

100% agree with this
Not to detract from the discussion, but I just saw yesterday on Vogue India's instagram that Aalia "Eff" (Pooja Bedi's daughter) is being featured on the site; I go over to her instagram and see that she will be on the cover of Femina India. This is something that the average model/actor works hard to achieve and this child who has done nothing as of yet is being handed these things on a platter.
Also saw on her page that she was at NYU for a year studying filmmaking and transferred this year to NYFA into a one-year acting course, probably to rush her debut. And I won't even mention her godawful put-on American accent that she somehow acquired after living there for a year.

And it's not just her. Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Imran Khan, Shahid Kapoor are given chance after chance after chance to prove their worth. They may even be great actors (IMO Shahid Kapoor and ABJr are), but at the end of the day without box office pull, hiring them is not financially viable. With their hit/flop ratio, it can only be their connections that keep bringing them offers. Heck, even Harshvardhan Kapoor, whose debut film hasn't released, has two other films lined up. He's got industry biggies already vouching for him, and giving interviews touting him a star. If this isn't nepotism, what is?

And the next generation of "star kids". We've already been hearing for years about how Sri Devi's daughters, SRK's kids, all these ask.fm/insta famous kids will be debuting soon and most of it starts when they're still kids. Aaradhya Bachchan is a toddler and the media's already calling her a future superstar, printing stupid stories about how she'll act opposite AbRam Khan. It's as if they are being told, "this is the job for you". Most of the star kids debut so young, and most of the time work behind the scenes before their debut, sometimes even starting as teenagers. They start working towards this goal before they really even have a chance to consider their options.

If nepotism wasn't so prevalent, maybe we would have better talent, and talented actors would be given a fair chance (IMO Rajat Barmecha, Huma Qureshi among others). There's so many actors who aren't given the chance, and have to struggle so hard to even be noticed. Television actors, some who've worked for years and have an established fanbase, shift to movies and do not get quality work to do, either doing eroticas or side roles (Vikrant Massey comes to mind).

I'm done. lol I don't even know why I ranted about this.
