First Things First!

(August 20, 2016)

With so many exciting trailers releasing, the audience is spoilt for choice in the coming weeks

They say, the first impression is the last impression. And the same goes for our films. Cut the perfect trailer and that's half the battle won. And there is absolutely no arguing with the fact that grabbing the audience's first response is the only way to get a great first-day opening. It has become very important for filmmakers to catch their audience's attention with the first trailer as the competition is only getting tougher, given the rich content that films now boast of.

Starting this week, every week has at least two big films releasing. This has put increasing pressure on film producers to make the biggest impact they can while unveiling the first look of their film.

Many trailers have hit the bull's eye with their content and several recently released trailers have garnered a lot of appreciation, thanks to big banners making films that are high on content. Judging by the look of recent trailers the upcoming line-up looks rather exciting.

Kicking off the list of trailers is Nitya Mehra's Baar Baar Dekho; Sohail Khan's Freaky Ali, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury'sPink; Ravi Jadhav's Banjo; Neeraj Pandey's M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story and Ajay Devgn's Shivaay.

This week, we asked tradewallahs to comment on the performance of these trailers and what they think, feel and hope about them:

Remo D'Souza, Director

I am busy promoting A Flying Jatt, so I haven't been able to catch all the trailers but I watched the trailers of Shivaay, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story and Pink.

The moment you watch the Shivaay trailer you just go blank, as the scale and everything is so massive about the trailer that you feel like watching the film right now. There is so much grandeur and you know that Shivaay will take Hindi cinema to another level, I have never seen any film shot in ice so beautifully. The action also looks very high octane.

I am a huge fan of Dhoni so I am eagerly waiting to watch his film as I want to know about his inspiring life. Dhoni is like God to all Indians and the trailer fulfills all your dreams. Hats off to Sushant Singh Rajput, who worked very hard on this film because, when you watch the trailer, you feel as if you are watching Dhoni himself.

Pink, on the other hand, is very edgy and the trailer brings out that thriller element. And, after watching the trailer, you want to know what exactly happens in the film. So it leaves you with a query. I believe that's the best part about this trailer.

Sajid Samji (Farhad-Sajid), Director

I think all the trailers that have released have huge potential as they all are being talked about. The Shivaay trailer literally gives you goosebumps as the production quality is looking massive. It has got thrills, suspense, action, drama and romance. The film speaks about a father-daughter relationship and once you finish watching the trailer you want to watch it again and again because the way Ajay sir has shot it is marvelous, the snow mountains never looked so beautiful, atleast in Hindi cinema.

Baar Baar Dekho had a song release first and everyone is now looking forward to the film.Banjo looks very raw and the trailer gives you a feeling of watching something you've never seen before. I also loved the trailer of Freaky Ali... the humour is superb and Sohail bhai has come up with a comedy film after a long time. The M.S. Dhoni... trailer leaves you speechless and you can see the effort put in by Sushant Singh Rajput. It's the perfect trailer. With Pink, you know the content is going to be outstanding as watching the trailer is thrilling.

Nitesh Tiwari, Director

I have been busy and haven't been able to catch up with all the trailers but I loved theFreaky Ali trailer and I am waiting to watch Nawazuddin Siddiqui's humour on screen. On the other hand, Pink and the MS Dhoni biopic leave you with the feeling that there is much more to watch out for in the films, way beond what the trailers show.

Another trailer which I found very intriguing was the trailer of Shivaay, it looks very intense. Obviously Ajay Devgn has taken action and production value to another level which you realise right after watching the trailer. Diwali will be action packed because ofShivaay.

Mrigdeep Singh Lamba, Director

Suddenly, September looks like the most exciting month as all the films set to release look exciting. Of course, the first look and first trailer of a film decides its fate, and all the trailers that have released so far look very promising and different.

One trailer which gave me goosebumps was the trailer of Shivaay, the background chant just grows on you and so does the way the film has been shot. When you see the trailer you feel like there is so much more to watch in the film, especially the action, seems like Ajay Devgn will take Indian action to another level with this film.

Baar Baar Dekho's first song Kaala chashma became super-popular, and the trailer talks about time travel, which we haven't seen in Hindi cinema so far. So that generates some curiosity. Then the Freaky Ali trailer leaves you laughing, and obviously Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the lead is always worth watching. Pink looks intense. Raaz Reebot is a hit franchise and Emraan Hashmi is back in his favourite genre. And after watching the trailer of M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, you can't wait to watch the film. It promises cricket, emotion, drama and humour.

Rajat Arora, Writer

These days, the first look is the most important factor when it comes to any film and that's why a lot of planning and research goes behind giving out the first trailer, as the audience decides with the very first trailer whether they should watch a film or not. And among all the trailers Freaky Ali, Baar Baar Dekho, Pink, Raaz Reebot, Banjo, Shivaay, MS Dhoni biopic they all have made the trailers keeping their audience in mind.

Baar Baar Dekho is a commercial film and gives out the vibe of a clean family film and that's why they put the song first. Freaky Ali is a Nawazuddin Siddiqui film as the trailer promises mind blowing performance and humour. Pink looks edgy and is an intense court room drama, the trailer shows you some hard hitting dialogue, that's one film I am waiting for.

Raaz Reebot has its own audience and I am sure the film will have some brilliant melodies. Banjo looks very interesting it speaks about a music band from local place and as Ravi Jadhav has delivered such good films in Marathi it is something everyone will watch.

MS Dhoni biopic is a film that entire nation will watch for Dhoni, to know Dhoni. The trailer is outstanding you feel like clapping and seems like you are actually watching the match, it's the perfect trailer.

And the trailer which left me speechless was the high octane action-packed Shivaay, which sends adrenaline soaring as high as the snow-capped mountains it's shot on. This film will definitely take our Hindi cinema to another level, the production looks outstanding. Awesome action. Truly world class!

Tinku Singh, Group President & CSO (Chief Strategy Officer) - SRS Group

Bollywood has evolved over time, and movies like Pink showcase legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, who is playing a person with a bipolar disorder. These genres are spreading awareness among the masses in the best possible way. On the other hand, movies like M.S. Dhoni... give you a rush and make us look forward to the film's release because it is about our favourite Indian cricketer MS Dhoni's inspirational cricket battle. Baar Baar Dekho, a love story that unfolds through flashbacks and flash forwards will be captivating for the audience and Raaz Reboot will engage the audience with its thrill series, as usual. Viewers will certainly look forward to this one. We foresee these movies as great entertainers for our viewers.

Rajesh Makhija, AVP Sales and Marketing, Carnival Cinemas

Visually all the recent trailers are looking very appealing. Baar Baar Dekho looks vivacious and hooks a viewer on the conceptual level. MS Dhoni biopic talks about everything behind the skipper's super success. Riteish Deshmukh gets his rockstar look in Banjo and Pink is touted to be a suspense thriller that reflects on the dubious morals of today's times. In Freaky Ali's trailer, Nawazuddin fits right into the premise and steals the show as a golfer. Shivaay's trailer is intriguing on all levels. It's looking truly international.

Ramesh Sippy, Distributor, Mumbai

Shivaay, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story and Freaky Ali are the top three trailers which I liked most. All the trailers offer you something entertaining and are films to look forward to. But among all Shivaay definitely looks like it could come up with a look not seen before in Bollywood.

Vijay Kher,Distributor, CP

Undoubtedly, Shivaay is a sure-shot blockbuster as the film looks at par with international standards. The trailers have been cut so well, not revealing too much about the story and at the same time showing Ajay Devgn's character. The Shiv chanting in the trailer too is spectacular. From the action scenes to the drama, the trailer shows it all. Kudos to Devgn for attempting a film as bold as this. The other trailer that intrigued the audience with its thrilling courtroom drama is Pink. Amitabh Bachchan's character will once again woo the audience. Everyone is looking forward to the release of this film.

Jeetu Khandelwal, Distributor, Orissa

The trailer that grabbed maximum eyeballs was that of Shivaay, and for all the right reasons. The film has everything that a family masala holiday release should have, from drama to romance to emotion and most importantly, action. Ajay Devgn has done an outstanding job with the film. Visually, it is such a treat. Ab agar trailer hi itna zabardast hai toh film kis levelki hogi! Other than that, the trailer of M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story has drawn a great response from the audience and the trade. Sushant Singh Rajput has done a fabulous job.

Jaspal Dhingra, Distributor, East Punjab

Most of the trailers that released lately are very fresh and new. None of them is the regular masala-oriented trailer and their first look reveals that there is a story in the film. This is very important for today's audience as you can't fool them even with trailers.

Freaky Ali has very quirky comedy and has Nawaz as the lead. This is the first time the audience will see him in a ludicrous role. Shivaay is the perfect holiday release. It will be huge at the box office and create records for sure. Baar Baar Dekho's songs showcased fun but the trailer shows time travel, which is new for our audience. Dhoni's film too will be a winner.

Rakesh Singh, Distributor, Bihar

All these films look interesting to me but I would have to say that the best one is Shivaay as it has mass appeal with its action and it will also attract the classes due to its international style of filmmaking. The trailer of the film is absolutely great and it has created a lot of buzz. Dhoni's biopic too has a hard-hitting trailer and it has impressed the audience. Freaky Ali is a different kind of comedy, which also involves sports and the humour is being appreciated. It looks like a promising start to the festive season.

Murli Chhatwani, Managing Director, Muviwale Entertainment

According to me amongst the mentioned trailers Shivaay is one of my most favourite and preferred one as Shivaay has a blend of action and emotion and it gives you the feel of a complete entertainer for everyone. Also the MS Dhoni biopic is very well narrated and looks like an exciting film. The trailer gives you a complete insight on the life of the Indian Captain even before he became a cricketer. Pink too looks like a classy film coming from Shoojit Sircar and a National Award winning director.

Ainvaay will surely flop. Such roles don't suit Ajay neither a story with head or tail.

The article is written by BOI.co.in hmmm...Every producer has visited their office..Almost all actors too.

The timing makes it very clear that the industry wants Kjo to move ADH..and dont want the date announced on the teaser releasing in the next few days.

The entire exercise was to convey that Shivaay will get bigger share of screens even in multiplexes cause it looks "international" and that they have confidence in the product.

Seeing Ramesh Sippy here convinced me 100%

Shivaay seems to be the clear favourite. But then it needs a good story as well. Only then the movie will work.
Am looking forward to BBD and ADHM.
