yes its true.. all married girls/ women wear it... in north india..

Malayali women truly used to be/hopefully still are part of the matriarchal/matrilineal system. No one is tying their feet to sasural :)

And hence a lot of customs are different from the rest of India.

I think what you are saying is partially right.. It is a ritual but not mandatory. i only wore it when they make you wear it as a ritual and took it out immediately next day as it was hurting my leg while wearing sandals.. My in laws had no problem with it as even my mil doesnt wear one.. hve seen the same with many ppl.. so wearing toe ring is not mandatory in North India but yes it is a ritual which happens during wedding

We Gujarati's don't have that ritual
& I don't know about Panjabi or Tiwaris ritualsšŸ˜†
