The Lone White Horse

The lone white horse galloped across the woods...gaining and losing speed in tandem with the speed of its rider's thoughts. There was a splurge of emotions in his being. Anger, frustration, guilt..

The horse was made of steel, much like the heart of its owner.. or so the world thought.

One after the other, thoughts rushed into the rider's mind. An angelic face covered in bandages... so much so that only her eyes were visible. Those beautiful doe eyes..closed. Monitors beeping all around assuring that the injured heart was beating, albeit slowly. A number of tubes jutting into that frail body trying to infuse life into what seemed like a dead frame. Did those hurt? Of course, they did. But, may be not as much as the needles he had pricked in her heart. She had always been a fighter. Always stood up to whatever life threw at her. Trying to win, knowing that the odds were heavily stacked up against her. But this time, it seemed she just did not want to fight. She had given up even before the fight began. The last threads that bound her, and in turn him, to life were being snapped one by one.

How did it come to this? It didn't seem too long ago when the angel had fallen in to his arms. He had shrugged her off then. He had been in denial way too long. He had ended up pushing her far, far away from him and yet, she always found her way back to him. When he shredded her hopes with his caustic tongue one Diwali night. When he doubted her and tortured her for something she never did. When he had been kidnapped and she almost gave her life for him. Each and every time, she had found in her to forgive him, to love him unconditionally. This time, however, was different. He hadn't actually ditched her. He was just a tad bit late. It had taken too long for him to make that critical decision. And the delay had cost him dearly.

On knowing the truth from dadi, his mind was clouded with the images of the gunshot, the shriek of a teenager and all that followed. He did come around. His mother helped him to see sense. But, he was too late. Dadi had spit her venom and had gone for the kill. She hadn't believed dadi, though. She had gone out to search for him, all by herself. He had sped towards the marriage hall as soon as he had realised his folly. He was a minute too late. Just as he was zoomed his car into the parking.. he saw her.. in all her wedding finery.. trying to cross the road... when she got blinded by the lights of speeding truck. And before he could yell out to her to step aside, he saw her being thrown up into the air and then falling down with a thud. He went closer only to see her smeared with blood all over.

Everything that followed was a blur. He just had a faint idea that the family had seen what he had seen and they rushed her to the hospital. The doctor said that they had been trying but she wasn't responding. Next 24 hours were critical. He didn't know what he could do. He just took his keys and drove off in his white steel horse.. his companion in despair.
