The new show on Indian television Shakti - Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki' has reached a new height in terms of TRPs. This daily soap came up with a major twist lately, when it was revealed that Soumya, one of the lead characters of the show, is a transgender.
While this has come as a shock for the audience, the makers have a some strong reasons for the twist.
"The show deals with a subject which has never been attempted on TV before. We fail to understand that eunuchs are as normal as we are and are free to live their lives the way they want to. We see them begging on streets and I feel that's because we have left them no choice. This show is an attempt to bring the audience closer to the reality of eunuchs. We hope that our efforts bring about a change. Today our society has accepted LGBT and it's time we accept the Third Gender as a part of our society,"
"It is for the first time on Indian television that something like this has been attempted, so I am definitely expecting a lot of mixed reactions. I hope the audience accepts the truth in the show, and in reality. We have put in a lot of effort in creating this show; we had to be sure of all the right terms and we also wanted to ensure that the story didn't hurt any sentiments."
Currently, Soumya is shown in a state of deep shock as she gets to know the truth of her life. She will even be seen attempting suicide.
