Woman power and its 'filmi' avatars |

adhuri Dixt is back - so said the film promos of Aaja Nachle - dangling before the viewers the proverbial carrot. The good news is that it worked. In spite of the not very flattering reviews, there were enough people queuing up to watch la Dixit in action. Enough, in fact, to declare 'Housefull' during the weekend. Trade pundits are not yet unsure about the fate of the film but I, for one, certainly hope that Madhuri's magic manages to pull a few surprises. After all, this seems to be a year when women in the industry have had a few surprises up their sleeves. Earlier this year, Shilpa Shetty after Celebrity Big Brother turned into something of a postergirl for those facing racial abuse, director Farah Khan managed a coup of sorts with her big hit Om Shanti Om while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan continued to occupy our collective mindspace with her constant straddling of the east and the west with a Pink Panther and Jodhaa Akbar in the pipeline. The buzz about Tabu is that her performance in Mira Nair's Namesake might just take her where no Indian actor has gone before. Priyanka Chopra, following in the footsteps of her male contemporaries is reported to have signed a multicrore deal while Bipasha Basu, after a period of being dubbed as John's girlfriend has reversed the power equation in her favour. Not only has the sultry star managed something of a serious commitment from her man, she's also the one whom filmmakers are roping in to promote John's films. And we are not even getting into the film projects and shows she's snagged. Kareena Kapoor, with her stellar performance in Jab We Met has walked away with not just the kudos but also Saif Ali Khan, a man after her heart. She's also back to being friends with Karan Johar. Katrina Kaif has managed to surprise everyone with credible performances in her recent films and Malaika Arora-Khan continues to be popular choice for a sizzling number. Raima Sen and Konkona SenSharma are fast cementing their position as competent actresses in both mainstream and multiplex movies. Soha Ali Khan is gradually turning into an actress to watch out for while Amrita Singh's regular appearances in films give one reason to hope that she may just walk back with a meatier role. Sharmila Tagore too is holding her own as the Censor Board chief and making fleeting appearances. This year has also been good for Sarika who's put her past firmly where it belongs (in the past) and is on an upward swing with some watchable performances. The gracious Waheeda Rehman continues to fascinate filmmakers ever eager to pencil her in their projects - she's currently busy preparing for Dilli 6. Dimple Kapadia has signed up for films opposite the Big B and Mithun Chakraborty while Hema Malini continues her reign as Dream Girl with films and dance. Shabana Azmi has been busy doing what she's best at - nuancing roles big and small with elan. Ekta Kapoor continues to dominate the entertainment bandwidth with her soap factory as does Zarina Mehta of UTV and now Indrani Mukerjea has made an impressive debut too with an entertainment and music channel. Meghna Ghai has put in place Whistling Woods International, a film school with a difference. |
The Chak De! India girls are still about town promoting products, themselves and signing new deals while Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor after their high-wattage debuts have moved on to newer movies with big banners and more women directors with good scripts are finding takers.
Women in showbiz are in a mood to rewrite the rules. More power to them.
