20 Questions
Twenty questions is a game where each person takes turns asking the other a question, until they get to twenty questions. But Taani and Kriya had a different way of playing.
"Okay, so let's go over this one more time" says Taani, "We're going to take turns asking questions, but not only does the other person have to answer our questions, but we have to answer our own questions as well. Got it?"
"Got it" Kriya assures her.
She then asks "Do you want to go first?"
"Nope, that's okay" Taani says with a bright smile as Kriya groans.
"Um, alright let's see... Let's start with something easy" says Kriya, causing Taani to look intrigued, "What's your favorite color?"
"Oh, that's easy, red!" exclaims Taani, "It's the color of strength and determination."
"Yeah, I can see why you'd like that" muses Kriya.
"Alright, now what about you?" asks Taani. "Um, pink? No wait, maybe dusty rose... Nope, it's white! Actually... yeah, definitely dusty rose" Kriya indecisively rambles on. "Wow, someone likes to think things through" Taani says teasingly. "More like someone who has no idea what they want" Kriya admits guiltily. "And that's okay" Taani is quick to assure her.
"Alright, your turn" says Kriya. "Oh, um... okay then" says Taani, "What's your favorite food?"
"Mmm, chole bhature, especially the kind my mom makes because everything she makes is always really spicy" says Kriya, her mouth watering at the thought. "I'll have to keep that in mind" Taani says mysteriously. "Alright" says Kriya, unsure as to what she should make of that statement, "What's your favorite food?"
"Chocolate chip waffles, especially when my best-friend Maya makes them for me because she adds maple syrup, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, berries, and sometimes even sprinkles or ice cream" says Taani, moaning at the thought of having one of Maya's most famous creations in her mouth.
"Okay, I'm pretty sure you just described a cake" says Kriya. "A waffle cake" says Taani. "Well whatever it is, it sounds like a plate full of diabetes and toothaches" says Kriya. "Okay, what do you have against sweets?" asks Taani. "Four cavities and two silver teeth" Kriya explains. "Ah!" says Taani, "Well in that case, let's move on to your next question."
"Ooo, I know! My favorite question to ask ever" Kriya says excitedly, "What was your most embarrassing moment?"
"Ugh, why couldn't you have been nice and asked me what I thought about the Twilight series?" groans Taani. "Just answer the question" says Kriya, rolling her eyes. "Ugh, fine!" Taani groans.
She takes a deep breath as she tells Kriya her story, "Okay, I'm not sure if bhai ever told you this, but there was this one time when we went fishing with our naanu, and I was trying to catch this fish, but I fell of the boat, and when I emerged a few seconds later, I felt a slight draft near my chest."
Kriya's jaw drops as she exclaims "Oh my god, you mean-"
Taani doesn't even let Kriya finish, "Yeah, my top fell off."
"Aw, honey" Kriya says sympathetically. "It's fine, no one even saw anything, and I was ten so there wasn't much to even look at" Taani assures her. "Yeah, but still" says Kriya.
"Ugh, bhai never lets me live it down! He's always like, 'don't take her near the water, you never know when she'll end up flashing someone.' Brothers I swear!" Taani rants. Kriya bursts out laughing as Taani yells "Oh my god, it is not funny!"
"It's a little funny" Kriya manages to say in between laughs.
Soon, after seeing Kriya laugh so hard, Taani begins laughing as well. "You're right, it is a little funny" Taani admits.
"But did he seriously never tell you anything about it?" asks Taani, still unable to believe that her brother kept her very embarrassing secret. "Nope" says Kriya. "Huh, guess he did keep his promise" says Taani. "You made him promise not to tell anyone, and he didn't. What's the big deal?" asks Kriya, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion.
"Well, there's the fact that he's from this irritating yet oh so fascinating, due to their constant need to question everything that you do, species known as 'big brothers.' They tend to tease you, taunt you, make fun of you, except some kind of reward in return helping you because apparently doing things out of the kindness of their own hearts just doesn't do it for them" Taani rants.
"Okay, I think I get the picture" says Kriya, stopping Taani right there before she starts this entire rant on older brothers and why they kind of suck. "Sorry, I kind of tend to get carried away" Taani says sheepishly. "It's fine" Kriya assures her, "It's actually kind of funny."
"Well, I'm glad that I have the ability to amuse you" says Taani.
"Now, since this is your favorite question to ask, it's probably also your least favorite question to answer" Taani says cheekily. Kriya groans. "Crap, I forgot about that" she mutters. "Clearly" says Taani, snorting, "Now, Miss Kriya Ghai, what was your most embarrassing moment?"
"Okay, I can do without the dramatic voice and that weird thing that you're doing with your eyebrows" says Kriya, secretly amused by Taani's antics.
"Um, okay, so I don't usually get embarrassed around guys. But there this one time where I very publicly humiliated myself in front of this really cute guy who looked exactly like Shahid Kapoor" Kriya begins.
"Oh my god, what did you do?" asks Taani, extremely curious at this point.
"Okay, so I was in the food court with a couple of friends, and I was carrying everyone's food towards the table because, you know, my treat. Well, I couldn't see a thing because there was all this food in front of my face, and next thing I know, I bump into someone, and all my food goes flying! Oh, and get this? None of it fell on me, it all got on him! He was covered in hot, boiling food, and ice cold drinks... God, that is like the worst combination ever! And I was so not sure as to what I should do, so I just ran away as fast as I could!"
Taani was literally lying down on the wooden floor of the tree house as she laughed her head off, tears streaming down her face. Kriya dropping all that food on a Shahid Kapoor lookalike and then being all dumbstruck and running away like the spirit of Milkha Singh just entered her was a hilarious sight to imagine!
"Stop!" Kriya whines, Taani's laughter being so contagious that it was now starting to cause her to laugh as well.
"I'm sorry, I just- I can't!" Taani struggles to form proper sentences.
Once their laughter has died a little, Kriya says, "Alright, your turn Miss Shekhawat!"
"Why thank you Miss Ghai!" Taani says, mimicking Kriya's terrible British accent. "Hm, I think I do it worse" Kriya says 'apologetically.' "Oh honey, don't flatter yourself!" says Taani, causing both girls to burst out laughing once again.
"Okay, what the hell is wrong with us tonight?" demands Taani, absolutely baffled by the fact that both girls will at this point probably laugh at the drop of a hat.
"Yeah, why are we behaving like the giggle twins when we're not even drunk?" says Kriya. Taani snorts as she raises and eyebrow and questioningly says, "The giggle twins?"
"It just slipped out" is all Kriya has to say for herself.
There's a moment of silence that passes between the two girls, which is finally broken by Taani when she says, "I can't remember the last time I actually laughed like this." Kriya looks at Taani, just she turns to look at her. "Me neither" says Kriya.
"Who was your first kiss?" Taani blurts out all of the sudden. "What?" says Kriya, so taken aback by what Taani had just said that she was at a loss for words. "My question is, who was your first kiss?" Taani repeats her question. "Oh!" is all Kriya can manage to say, stumbling over her words for a good twenty seconds.
"Come on, you don't remember your first kiss?" Taani asks her, tilting her head to the side.
Kriya sighs. "My first kiss was with Karan, a couple years ago, in this very treehouse" she tells Taani. "Karan as in..." Taani trails off, waiting for Kriya to fill in the blanks. "Yeah" says Kriya.
"Di came over here for the famous once a month' get-together, which I'm sure you know all about. Anyways, she's brought me to them loads of times, but I was really bored this one time because Karan was, strangely enough, having some guy bonding time with Varun and Kunal, and Aliya seemed perfectly content with her camera, so I decided to take a walk into the woods. And that's where I met this one guy, I don't even remember his name. But we really hit it off, we had a lot of common interests, and he was fun hang out with.
Then one night, he invited me out on a date. I was the most dressed up that I had ever been, and I waited for him. For three hours. That's when I finally realized that he had stood me up. I went up to the treehouse, and I sat here all alone. I don't know how long I was here because the next thing I know, Karan is shaking me awake, telling me that it's almost midnight, and everyone is worried sick. And then everything spills out of me like a waterfall! About the guy, about being stood up, about the fact that I probably passed out from crying... And Karan just held me, let me cry my eyes out. Then next thing I know, I'd stopped crying and I was kissing him. Or, he was kissing me... I don't know! Bottom line is, we agreed to never bring it up again. That was my first kiss."
But while Kriya was telling her story, she hadn't realized that Taani's arms had wrapped around her frame. Now, Kriya's not a very affectionate person, not physically at least. But she let it slide with Taani because she had a feeling that Taani was the exact same way.
Kriya turns her head towards Taani and asks "So, who was your first kiss?"
"Well, my first kiss was my boyfriend Daksh. But it was before he was my boyfriend, when we were around thirteen years old" Taani begins, "It was also in this treehouse at around midnight. We were both feeling left out and fed up with our friends growing up faster than us, and I guess our childish minds were afraid that we would get left behind. So we made a pact of sorts. We agreed that we would kiss, just to get this whole first kiss business over with, and then never speak of it again. It was honestly the greatest moment of my life, it was magical! It will forever and always be my favorite kiss, and I'll never forget it."
"So having our first kisses in this treehouse during midnight is another thing that we have in common" remarks Kriya, causing Taani to chuckle as she says, "Guess so."
"Beat that" Taani says suddenly. Kriya raises an eyebrow as she says "Okay! Hm, let's see... Oh, I know! If you could have any superhero power, which one would you choose to have?"
"You got me" Taani says sarcastically, causing Kriya to giggle.
"But to this answer amazing, thought-provoking, in depth analysis of my life question of yours, I would want to have either the power of fire, or have super strength. With fire I can wipe out all my enemies just like that, and with super strength I can practically crush them in my hands."
"So you're someone that likes to have all power and control, huh?" says Kriya, as if she's in deep thought. "Are you analyzing my choices?" asks Taani, 103% sure that that's exactly what Kriya's doing. "Possibly" Kriya admits. "Karan was right, you are a meddler" says Taani, causing Kriya to gasp at the outrageous thought. Taani rolls her eyes and continues, "Just answer the question drama queen."
"Okay rude, but fine" says Kriya.
"If I could have any superpower, I'd probably either want the power of invisibility, or super stretch. Invisibility is the best advantage, defense wise, and it'll be great for sneak attacks. And super stretch can help to easily trap my enemies, not to mention, I can probably squeeze the life out of them like a snake."
"Interesting..." says Taani, rubbing her chin, pretending to be in deep thought, "So you prefer the silent but deadly approach?"
"Hilarious" says Kriya.
She then asks "Hey, did you notice that the powers that we picked are powers from-"
"The Fantastic Four?" suggests Taani, finishing Kriya's sentence. "Yeah!" exclaims Kriya, "How did you know?"
"Um, because it's the Fantastic Four and they are the greatest superheroes ever?!" Taani says as if it's the most obvious thing ever. "Exactly!" exclaims Kriya, "Finally, someone with a brain. When I told Swayam about this, all he did was go on some stupid Spiderman rant!"
"Oh my god, do not get me started on bhai and his Spiderman rants. We get it, he goes to school and he saves the world, get over it, move on!" shouts Taani.
"God, just imagine if we had the Fantastic Four's powers! We'd be-" Kriya begins to say, when Taani starts to say it at the same time as her, "the Terrific Two!" Both girls burst out laughing at the fact that they said it at the same time.
"Okay, that was freaky" remarks Taani.
"Yeah... Next question please" says Kriya. "Um, okay! What is the weirdest talent that you have?" asks Taani. "Oh, that's easy!" exclaims Kriya, "I can catch just about anything and everything."
Taani snorts.
"No you can't" she says. "Yes I can!" protests Kriya. "Wait you're serious?" asks Taani, realizing that Kriya was in fact not kidding about this talent of hers.
"Huh, well in that case, I can't wait to test it out!" Taani tells her, smirking. "Alright judgy, what's your weirdest talent?" asks Kriya, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Well, I can chop faster than The Flash can run" Taani informs her. "You cannot!" says Kriya. "I can too!" protests Taani. "Oh well we'll just have to see about that now won't we?" challenges Kriya. "Oh we'll see alright" says Taani, narrowing her eyes at Kriya.
"Your turn" Taani then reminds Kriya. "Right!" says Kriya, "What was your favorite childhood toy?"
"That's a very interesting question" remarks Taani. "Yeah, I don't know how my brain works sometimes" says Kriya, shaking her head. "Same girl, same" says Taani, nodding her head at Kriya.
"Alright, now answer the question!" Kriya says excitedly. "Okay, you are way too excited about this question" remarks Taani. "Oh hush!" Kriya says snippily.
"Okay, my favorite childhood toy was a teddy bear who was nameless up until I had reached the age of twelve, and I started becoming obsessed with this one singer named P!nk, so I decided to name my teddy bear after her."
"Your teddy bear was nameless for over a year?!" demands Kriya. "Ten years if you want to be specific" says Taani. "You monster" growls Kriya, causing Taani to look amused and confused as to whether or not she's actually being serious. "You're very interesting, you know that right?" Taani tells her. "Why thank you" says Kriya.
"Anyway, back to P!nk, the name is kind of ironic because I hate the color pink with a burning passion and I think that it is the most repulsive color on the planet, but that's another story" says Taani, unaware of the monster she's unleashed with that phrase.
"You hate the color pink?!" demands Kriya, "How can you hate the color pink?! It's the color pink! It's the color that women are still continuing to use today to define our gender, despite the fact that it is constantly used to put us down. Do you have any idea how powerful the color pink is?! Not only does it represent us as women, it is the color that represents anti-bullying. I mean, come one, International Day of Pink? 'On Wednesdays, we wear pink' - remember that?"
"Wait, I thought that was just a quote from Mean Girls" Taani scrunches her eyebrows in confusion, unfazed by the death glare she's getting from Kriya, because compared to Sanju, Kriya looks like a puppy trying to be a wolf.
"The point is," Kriya breaks Taani's train of thought, " Going against the color pink is like going against everything that it stands for. The color pink supports our gender and those who are being bullied everyday. The color pink, might just be the most important of all colors!"
"Okay, you are way too passionate about this one color" is Taani's way of gently telling Kriya to calm down the crazy. "And you missy are not passionate enough!" Kriya fires back.
"Okay!" Taani exclaims, throwing her arms in the air in surrender, "So what was your favorite childhood toy?"
"Oh, um..." "Kriya, if you don't want to tell me, that's okay too" Taani tells her. "No, no, it's okay" Kriya protests, "It was just a stuffed dog."
"Alright then" says Taani, not wanting to pry just yet, "What's your favorite holiday?" Kriya's face immediately lightens up when she hears the question.
"Oh, that's super easy!" she exclaims, "It's New Year's! Every new year brings a new day, and new possibilities. It's kind of like a restart button you know? New year, new me? I always liked that phrase, it's so true. Every new year is like a fresh start. You've learned from your mistakes, and you're ready to change, to be a different person. I think that New Year's gives people the perfect opportunity to have a more positive outlook on life, that things and can and will get better."
When Kriya looks over at Taani, she can sees this smile on her face. "What?" says Kriya.
"Nothing, it's just... you're so optimistic and positive and happy! I don't know, it's just... really nice" Taani explains. "Thanks" says Kriya, smiling back.
"Me and my boyfriend actually got together on New Year's a couple years back" Taani says out of the blue. "Daksh right?" Kriya looks up at her innocently. Normally Taani would flinch or freak out if someone said his name, but for some reason, it felt okay for Kriya to say it.
"Yeah, Daksh" Taani says, a little sadly, "We actually confessed our feelings in a jungle, weirdly enough."
"Well, I think that that's very romantic" says Kriya. "Thank you" says Taani.
"So, what's your favorite holiday?" asks Kriya. "Um, probably Raksha Bandhan" says Taani, "I look forward to it every year because it just always reminds how lucky I am to have Swayam as my brother."
"When we were little, during our very first Raksha Bandhan, bhai wasn't exactly happy. He said something like 'well why do brothers get their own special day, why can't sisters have one too?' in his little five year-old voice, and ever since that day, bhai did what every sister does for her brother on Raksha Bandha. He fasted for me, he made a rakhi, and he liked to joke that he only does it to get a return gift, but I know that he does it because he loves me. Because he wants me to know that he appreciates me and he'll protect me, just like I appreciate him and I protect him.
That's the thing that I love most about my brother. He sees me as an equal, he treats me like as an equal. I'm his baby sister, but that's not how he treats me. He knows that I don't like to feel weak, and that I can take care of myself, and the best part is, he respects that. He doesn't pull any of that overprotective big brother crap on me, mainly because he knows that I'd smack him silly if he did. I like that he has faith in me, that I'm not some helpless little girl to him, and that's why I love my brother. That's why I love Raksha Bandhan! It reminds of how lucky I am to have a brother like Swayam."
"That sounds exactly like something Swayam would do" muses Kriya, "It's one of the main reasons why I'm friends with him."
"My dad and my naanu are a lot like that too, so I guess that's why he turned out the way he did" says Taani, "If they'd been different, he might've been different too."
"Do you really think so?" Kriya sends Taani a questioning glance. "I know so" says Taani.
"We'll discuss more nurture vs. nature later" says Kriya, "What was your worst haircut?"
"Oh god, I'm getting horrific images in my head just thinking about!" groans Taani. "Yeah, well, how about you project these thoughts using your mouth?" suggests Kriya. "Don't sass me" says Taani.
"My worst haircut was probably at age ten. It was one fine summer day... Translation: it was hotter than hell and having long hair felt like being under the biggest curse imaginable. So stupid little ten year-old me decided to let my best-friend Maya cut my hair. Biggest. Regret. Of my life! And I dyed my hair orange once. Like, seriously, to this day, I don't know if she used scissors, or a buzzsaw, I kid you not!"
Kriya bursts out laughing trying to imagine Taani's hair. "I am totally going to see if Swayam has pictures" she says. "You wouldn't dare" warns Taani. "Oh, I dare" says Kriya, not the least bit fazed by Taani's glare. When your mother is literally Rani Lakshmibai, and your older sister is the queen of all ice queens, nothing tends to faze you. Other than one of Sharon Rai Prakash's mood swings.
"Okay hyena that's replaced Kriya Ghai, please enlighten me with the story of your worst haircut" says Taani. "Ugh, fine" groans Kriya, "My worst haircut was when I was about nine maybe, and I blew this really huge bubble, and when it popped, all the gum got stuck in my hair. So in the end, I had to shave my hair off, and wore hats for over a year."
"That is hilarious" says Taani. "It is not!" protests Kriya, "People called me Hat-ah-tah-tah' because I would wear my hat during dance, and in trying to make sure that it didn't fall off, I completely messed up all my steps, like, no coordination, whatsoever. It was a mess, I was a mess!"
"Hat-ah-tah-tah?" Taani snorts, raising an eyebrow, "That is like the worst nickname I've ever heard, and I am actually disappointed in you right now for being affected by such a sucky nickname."
"It was pretty stupid..." Kriya trails off, now giving it some thought. "And it only took you over ten years to realize that!" Taani exclaims, causing Kriya to lightly smack her on the arm.
