Omkara and Shivaay- A study in contrasts

I am making a post to increase the forum activity (not that it isn't already active with all the threads dedicated to Omkara 😆) and because I've had this question going round in my head. What I find most intriguing in this show is the similarities and differences between the two elder brothers of the Oberoi clan (of the latest generation).

There was this article I read long back about a model of the human psyche made up of three distinct parts- the Id, the Ego and the Super-ego. Every person shows traits which are a fair mixture of these three units.

(Quick psychology lesson: As per Google- the Id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual trends, like eating, sleeping, sex, sometimes rage etc., all those activities that are essentially second nature and do not involve a deeper analysis by the mind. The Super-ego plays the critical and moralizing role, weighing pros and cons before taking a decision. The Ego is the organized, realistic part that mediates between the desires of the id and the super-ego through means that may at times be instinctual and at times well-analysed. Okay lesson over! 😛)

Now if we superimpose these trends over the Ishqbaaz brothers, we get a personified version of each trend among them. At least one trend is dominant in the personality of each brother.

My take-

Shivaay is the instinctual one who lets anger/arrogance/grief dictate his every action. For instance, his indifference towards those of the lower class (as he perceives them) and subsequent annoyance at Priyanka for associating with such people is quite evident (and instinctual). His ruthlessness (at times devoid of ethics) involved in running the business empire or upholding the family name often portrays him as someone who would go through any means to secure his ends. He is more Id than anything else.

While some may find his present character the end-result of the toxic domestic environment at home, his brother Omkara, who's been witness to Tej and Janvi's broken marriage, survived a stint at a rehab and may have gone through the same dystopian home life as Shivaay, presents a fairly contrasting picture. He is the Super-ego among the three, who has found an outlet for his woes in his sculptures. He has braved all the negativity perpetual in his family and still strived to hope. He is the quintessential voice of reason, who is not prone to extreme emotions until provoked. Or his inner turmoil bursts forth only when graves of the past are dug open.

The goofball, Rudra, is the binding force that ties them together. The first argument between Shivaay and Omkara was brushed under the rug once Rudra stepped into the scene. He is the Ego that's bound to swing between two ends of the spectrum to keep his brothers from drifting apart. The show is yet to explore Rudra's character with any depth, so I wouldn't really comment more on his success as the Ego.

However, at the end of the day, all three are humans and the Id has bits of Ego and Super-ego, while the Super-Ego may react on instincts at times. 😊

Phew! Okay done! Thoughts?

P.S.: If it all sounds stupid or resembles plain gibberish, blame my wacky mind and yeah, ignore the post. 😛 But I would love to have a discussion on this front if anyone is interested.

I forgot to unres! Sorry for the delay 😒
I loved the way you analysed the three brothers using psychoanalysis! 😃

a human being is composed of all the three id, ego and superego so the three brothers unity becomes the strength and hope for humanity or here for that matter the Oberoi family 😃 In this totally dysfunctional family if something at all makes sense and logic then it's them. Just like how human beings strive to survive is a completely destroyed land.

I was just adding through your comparison. Hope I make some sense 😆

I think people learn problem solving skills from their parents. As children they watch their parents deal with things and may absorb some of the traits (not a hard and fast rule)
Look at Pinky. She's obnoxious and rude. Attacks whom she perceived as weaker using their weakness as taunts. Doesn't think twice to rub it in to glory. The other person's pain is inconsequential and irrelevant to her. Hides behind her great elevated status to feel important. Remind you of Shivaay yet?

But he is breaking the rule in parts where his brothers and Dadi are concerned.

Then look at Janhvi, she is sullen and tortured. Keeps her woes to herself. Able to be hopeful and loving to the children in the house. Strong sense of right and wrong and justice (although denied to her ). Although Omkara has his art, Janhvi turned to drink. Notice how they're always at it, him with sculpting and her with her drinking.

Now Rudra doesn't fit at all..😆

That is because Rudra has been protected by his brothers!!!!

You protect the young one as you don't want them to suffer as you have!!!!

Shelter them from every storm!!!!
