Today we finally find out the truth of Om's ominous past. The boy who has been shown thus far as trying to be better than his parents, breaking their cycle of viciousness, is a boy who was running scared and alone and trapped in the life his parents had given him. Om at some level feels like a failure not being better than the cycle of toxicity his parents have wrought in not only his life, but everyone else's. It makes sense why he views himself so differently from his father, from his mother and at times his brothers. He has a past that he's ashamed of, but one he nonetheless fought to survive. Om fails to see that HE survived all on his own, HE got better, HE got help, HE is still here and HE is the one that keeps trying to be better than his past and his parents. It makes sense now why he upholds honesty as his moral North, it's because his life as an addict before was marred by lies and dishonesty. How many things he must have hidden, how many feelings must he have kept bottled up or just lied about to have gotten him to the point where he felt that his only out was a high? This poor boy who's suffered so much but CONTINUES to be better and to show that he is better, all his progress was disgustingly snatched from him by his aunt's words. What a callous thing to do. Om, you are so much better than your circumstances, and one day you're going to see it for yourself.
