I don't understand what your brother did that was wrong. He wanted a professional relationship with a girl who misunderstood his intentions (possibly because of a troubled life). When she came to understand his real intentions she got angry and trashed him to your mom and you - totally getting the analogy but not your point. If she had a difficult childhood and bad relationship etc why assume your brother "sent wrong signals" instead of she was just wrong in her understanding. Why is she not wrong for making allegations against him to people whose opinions he values because she lacks social awareness and/or has a vivid imagination?

And I think Selina means if some girl shows up on your doorstep accusing your married father of sending her wrong signals what would be your reaction to that?
