Recently I switched on the news channel Aaj Tak only to hear the words, "main usko maar dalunga/I am going to kill somebody" and the anxious reporter going, "Acha, keya dushmani hain aapko Himesh Reshmaniya se/ Really, what problem do you have with Himesh?" Apparently this was a conversation between an underworld don with the reporter. This is just an example, and the real conversation did not entirely take place in this manner.

But, don't you find it ridiculous when Indian channels show conversation with the don's? What about the influence on the little kids growing up who happen to tune on one of these channels & listen to this? Don't you think they will find this whole thing so "special" that it is being aired on a channel. And the most ridiculous aspect is of the "don" talking about killing, yet no one saying a thing. These reporters still continue, as if the don just talked about yesterday's weather.

Anyway, if it's not the "don's" we regularly catch on news channels - then chasing the celebrities is another favorite - whether its Aishwarya Rai – where they will air a special segment on whether Aishwarya is pregnant or not – in that segment they will show her dancing on some song from some movie of hers, or walking hand in hand with Abhishek.

If not this, then they will talk about a victim of rape, and they will go around asking the people in the area what happened. But, what about the girl? I highly doubt it she would like her problem being revealed to the whole world. They usually don't show her face, but they do show the neighborhood she lives in, her parents, her brother everybody – so that anyone who possibly knows the girl can easily figure out who she is. In one particular instance, I saw, the news channel declared that the girl got raped, and no one came to her rescue, yet what was even more terrible and awful was when the news cameras went around asking questions to people from the area.

This is not only the case with Aaj Tak, but other news channels as well - atleast the ones that air in U.S & Canada. I'm not saying the news channels show all the wrong things, in some instances, they do show some beneficial things as well, but these are tid bits that are very disturbing to watch.

What are your thoughts on the news channels? Do you think they should be given a makeover & air a bit more educational stuff for the benefit of our future generation or simply continue with what they presently have?

This is a bit off topic but just want to share.

A few days back I saw one such conversation with a 'Don' (forgot who, some right hand man of Dawood) on Aaj Tak. It was regarding a video that has come out, where all the main accused of '93 Mumbai blasts (except for Dawood) can be seen together on the occasion of the opening of some mall in Dubai. This 'Don' was denying that Tiger Memon was in that video. He was literally thrashing and threatening the presenter over the phone for showing someone as Memon, and the next thing you know, this presenter starts addressing the 'Don' as 'bhai' and becomes extra polite and respectful in his conversation. It was disgusting but hilarious at the same time to see someone on national TV act like that.

i agree with both of you.
in 2003 at the onset of Iraq war, I remember Aajtak reporting " is vishay me saddam saab ne vishleshan nahee diyaa" 😆

these news media are terrible. not just in india, i am very disappointed even here although i admit it is lighter shade of grey.

People people people..!!!

Why are we looking at Aaj Tak as a yardstick??

India has 3 categories of news Channels... Good, Bad and Ugly...

Good- NDTV, CNN IBN, Times Now (To an extent)

Bad- Aaj tak, Headlines Today

Ugly- Zee News, Star News etc..

Aaj Tak being the only Hindi news channel in the "Bad" category gets voted the "Best" Hindi news channel... sadly... (The other Hindi Channel NDTV India is NOT considered too Hindi by Indians)

Tht doesnt mean all News Channels are bad... Its just that the target audiences differ... While the intellectuals truly interested in News would watch NDTV and CNN IBN, channels like Aaj Tak cash on gossip abt where Ash went on her honeymoon or what Paris Hilton ate in jail and stuff like Dons' interviews to sustain viewer interest... Its all about choosing the right news channel to watch....

Btw... There is no news channel that is truly unbiased... Even CNN, BBC and Fox News are as biased as the good Indian News channels...

THE SOLUTION LIES NOT IN CENSORING NEWS CHANNELS...

IT LIES IN CHOOSING THE RIGHT NEWS CHANNEL TO WATCH!!
