After a long gap, Aamir Khan is back with a new film. Taare Zameen Par is especially special. After all, it marks his debut as a director.

Aamir will also produce and act in this film.

The film's idea came from Amole Gupte, who apparently went to college with Aamir. The film was to be directed by Gupte initially, but Aamir was not happy with the way the film was progressing, and eventually decided to make it himself. Amole, however, has been credited in the titles.

Taare Zameen Par, which releases on December 21, also stars Darsheel Safary, Tanay Cheda, Sachet Enginner, Tisca Chopra and Vipin Sharma.

Taare Zameen Par: Songs of innocence

Sukanya Verma

November 05, 2007 14:59 IST

Nothing compares to the carefree, curious and confused days of childhood. Producer Aamir Khan knows it only too well.

The actor known for his perfectionist ways celebrates the splendour and spontaneity of the wonder years in his directorial debut, Taare Zameen Par.

And who better than the gifted troika of Shankar Mahadevan [Images], Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa to helm the music of this children's film?

The lilting and measured pace of Shankar Mahadevan's fine rendition of Taare Zameen [Images] Par transports you to a wondrous world of poetry and possibilities. Trust them to infuse tender magic in Prasoon Joshi's sweet-sounding similes, an ode to the unforgettable memories of childhood.

A stirring guitar, backed by electronic enchantment, contributes greatly to Raman Mahadevan's rocking delivery of Kholo Kholo. The track's promising 'spread-your-wings' philosophy is perfectly brought out in this enthusiastic production.

Aamir, with generous help from Shaan, mouths gibberish to get into the good books of fidgety kids in Bum Bum Bole. A quintessential bachcha party number celebrating the colours and dreams of schooldays. Though it's a fun song, it is likely to appeal more on the visual medium.

Exit Kiss Of Love (Jhoom Barabar Jhoom). Enter Jame Raho. Composer cum singer Vishal Dadlaani merrily discusses the different breeds of children here -- the obedient types, the laidback ones and the dreamers. Again, a situational ditty. But an imaginative one, nevertheless.

What goes on in an impressionable mind when sent away from home -- insecurities, fears and concerns -- are eloquently and emotionally conveyed by Shankar Mahadevan in the sentimental Maa. This one tugs at the heartstrings.

'Idiot, duffer, lazy, crazy. Tumhara problem kya hai, beta?' Blistering questions directed at a hapless young thing make up for the hollering Bheja Kum. Oddly enough, all the rebuke and yelling is music to been-there-heard-that ears.

Gleehive, a kid's chorus group, opens the endearing motif of Mera Jahan, followed by Adnan Sami's [Images] soulful performance. Guest composed by Shailendra Barve, Mera Jahan gives us a musical peek into the child protagonist's idealistic and innocent universe.

The album wraps up with Ishaan's Theme, an instrumental, reflecting a little boy's emotional graph. It starts out seemingly soothing, becomes ruffled and complex, only to calm down to a happy melody again.

Taare Zameen Par isn't your regular soundtrack about fluttering hearts and sleepless nights. What makes these delicate and whimsical creations special is their underlying innocence.

I have eight or ten pack abs

Says Aamir Khan in a lighter vein, as he flexes his muscles to promote Taare Zameen Par

A cigarette packet, a personal cellphone, an easy smile and accessibility.

Aamir Khan never carried any of these. But the child in him has made him change.

Taare Zameen Par, the story of a child and Aamir's latest movie, has also altered his prefix from actor-producer to director now.

He says, "I am so nervous that in the last 20 days I have lost count of the cigarettes I have been smoking.

But I don't smoke in front of my kids and promise to give up the moment the movie releases," says the actor, who is making a big screen appearance after nearly 18 months."

Changing ways

"Yes, I have been accused of making selective appearances. But now I am more accessible. It will take time but I am changing," defends Aamir.
However, he is quick to add that the cellphone will never become an extension of him, "The last few days have been crazy.

I need to stay in touch with my core team, make last minute changes and decisions and hence...." says Aamir, known to communicate only through a set of walky-talkies and confidantes.

Taare Zameen Par, Aamir's first as a director, is about a dyslexic child. But Aamir stresses it's commerical, "This is not just a 'cause and message' picture. There are songs, dances, fun and yes, there is the message that comes across.

I don't want people to assume it's a serious movie, "He cites RDB (Rang De Basanti). "There was a message in the movie but, wasn't it entertaining and commercial as well?"

Are you this nervous before every release?
Yes, I am generally apprehensive but this time, all the more. Not that I haven't smoked in the past. But one evening, I was even more nervous than usual. And took it up. Haven't stopped since. As the nervousness recedes, I am sure the smoking will too.

The toughest part of directing?
The decision to direct. Writer Amol (Gupte), and I had umpteen discussions on who could be the appropriate choice. We did zero in on several names but taking on a new director would have meant a delay of at least six to eight months. We would have had to wait for a fresh school session as well to shoot in the school.

And most critically, delay would've meant, Darsheel Safary, (the child lead) would have grown by eight more months. His looks would've changed. I couldn't afford to wait longer. Hence, both Amol and I decided it was best was to take charge myself. Also, the new role meant that I would be away from my children for a longer time than expected.

It takes a lot to satisfy you. And this time, not just an actor, but a producer and director as well.
Yes, now I am satisfied. It took a lot to do that. Wasn't exactly happy at the initial stage. But as time and film cans started filling up, it started taking shape. I am quite excited with the music though. I believe there is much promise there.

Fanaa got caught in a political fire. Where do you stand with TZP?
I did think about it, as a producer. But, that's now the role of the distributor. Then, the circumstances were different, I am hoping that's a thing of the past and, children and families get to see TZP, irrespective of which state they are in. And that's what I have conveyed to my producers. So far, it seems on course.

Till the release, will Aamir Khan be all over the place?
It's good for the movie. Hence, anyone who comes up with a good idea, I'm making time for them. The back-to-school experience is fascinating.

What about your Tamil remake?
TZP releases on December 21, and, a week later, I intend switching off myself (and the cellphone) for the new year. The first week of January, I get busy on what you guys have named Ghajini.

I must confess, the name has been finalised and will announce it subsequently. I hope to complete it by March-end and then take a six-month break, hoping for a Diwali release. I have promised my children an exclusive six-month break after Ghajini, and I plan to live up to that.

You have one more change in you. Are six-pack abs in fashion suddenly?
Nope. The new muscular look is for Ghajini. And though I may not have measured them at last count, they are definitely more than six. I think I have eight or ten packs." (laughs). And for the record, I haven't watched OSO as yet. Please don't look for meanings in this. I am busy promoting my movie, that's all.

I f estimates are to be believed, roughly four to five children in a class of 40 suffer from either a mild or severe form of dyslexia. In such a case, the school becomes the primary space for identifying and treating the disorder. But are Delhi's schools geared towards helping dyslexic students? The Central Board for Second- ary Education (CBSE) and the Indian Council for Secondary Education (ICSE) both recognise dyslexia as a disability. As a result, students are given certain conces- sions such as exemption from third language, lesser coursework, and a writer and extra time during exams. Moreover, CBSE made inclu- sive education mandatory some years back, following which all Delhi schools now have at least a counsellor or a special educator on roll (if not a special education department). Take the case of Springdales school, Dhaula Kuan. "We've al- ways had an inclusive education programme in the school and in the last two years we have built a centre for special education," says Sonali Bose, a 'special' educator who head the special education cell at the school. Yet, there are reservations about the success of these meas- ures. "In relative terms, there has been an increase in aware- ness, but it is still a far-from-ideal situation. The so-called 'fancy' schools and international schools have the wherewithal to acknowl- edge it (dyslexia), but most do not," says Geet Oberoi, co-founder of the Delhi Learning Disabilities Association. So what kind of educational tools are teachers in Delhi using currently? Amar Jyoti has the Lin- guaphone for language learning, Montessori equipment and educa- tional CDs. Sondhi uses programs and practices laid down by Ameri- can Orton Dillingham as well as the Alpha to Omega program de- veloped by Dr Berry Hornsby, while Springdales provides all its less-abled students with com- puters to work on. Timely diagnosis and appropri- ate remedies can help children cope successfully with dyslexia. "It shouldn't even be necessary to recognise dyslexia as a disability, but merely a different learning need," believes Bose, something that many others echo.
