BENGALURU: Bollywood star Salman Khan's comment that he felt like a raped woman' shooting for Sultan has sparked social media outrage, with two opposing hashtags, #InsensitiveSalman and #SalmanMisquoted trending.

"While shooting, during those six hours, there'd be so much of lifting and thrusting involved... That was tough... I'd have to lift the same 120-kilo guy 10 times for 10 different angles...get thrown that many times on the ground. (The) act is not repeated that many times in... real fights... After the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman. I couldn't walk straight...(sic)," the actor who plays a wrestler had said at a press meet to promote the film.

In the interview, Salman also referred to women as a vice', saying he had quit two others " cigarettes and alcohol.

Reacting to his remarks, National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Lalitha Kumaramangalam sought a public apology and explanation from the actor.

"This (giving such a statement) is very irresponsible of Salman. The commission has taken suo moto cognisance and has sent him a letter, asking him what drove him to make such a statement as his comments reek of the patriarchal high headedness prevailing in our country. We are extremely offended," Kumaramangalam told ANI.

The letter, she has said, also states that if the commission is not satisfied with his answer, it will summon him.

"(Rape) is not equivalent to lifting 120 kg. I believe Salman's fans, especially women, should react negatively to this statement," she added.

Women's rights activists were also critical of the Bollywood star and said such remarks could encourage rape culture.

Sunitha Krishnan, Hyderabad-based social activist and rape survivor, describes the comment as disgusting'.

"Such statements promote rape culture. We should not merely condemn such statements but also the people (who make them). Someone with his looks, luck and status should be more responsible. I don't think he understands what he's talking about," she said.

Bengaluru-based college lecturer Renuka Balachandran observed that people are dismissing him as a fool. "But his comment is not foolish', it is misogynistic," she said.

Bengalurean comedian Praveen Kumar said the actor has gone from being Salman Bhai to Salman Bye'.

"I have lost the little respect I had for him after his comment," the stand-up artiste elaborated. "Tired after a day of shooting? Think of the black buck that couldn't walk properly after he shot it, or worse, the poor guy who went under his wheels."

Gowthaman Ranganathan, lawyer at Alternative Law Forum added, bitingly: "Appropriating his experience with rape...I don't think he will ever experience anything like it, though some of his victims might have."

Corporate employee Rajkumar Shandrasekaran said as a celebrity, he must be careful what he says, especially on sensitive topics.

Chinmayi S K, the techie behind developing the Bachao Android app for women safety, thinks though the comment is insensitive, given his history of insensitivity, people should not pay too much attention to it'.

Subhratim Das, senior business analyst at Vmware, and a fan of the superstar, admits that trying to draw an analogy to hard work and persistence to feeling like a raped woman is not right.

"Only a victim can understand the pain, distress, self-loathing and anger that she is going through," he said. "That said, let us keep in mind he realised his mistake and retracted the statement immediately."

Salman's shame

  • Indian Bollywood actor Salman Khan at a promotional event in Mumbai. AFP Photo

National Editorial Jun 22, 2016

Was Salman Khan #insensitive or #misquoted? Those were the two rival social media campaigns launched after the Bollywood star made a grotesque analogy, saying his schedule during the filming of Sultan was so gruelling he felt like "a raped woman".

Outrage was swift, especially so in a country where there has been widespread discussion about rape and sexual attacks against women. Khan has not yet apologised, although, in the interview, he did immediately realise his mistake and backtrack.

So was he insensitive? Yes, he took his comment back. But the insensitivity is that he said it in the first place. There is an attitude in parts of Indian society that doesn't see the seriousness of sexual assault. To a large degree, that atmosphere aids rapists, because it means their victims are afraid to come forward or find their complaints discussed. A public figure of Khan's stature should know better.

Whats amazing is these people still had respect for this loser even after his court cases, his hit and run, killing a man, killing endangered species and getting scot free by using money power?
WHY? HOW? 😲 How can anyone still have respect for this arrogant, nasty bully?

Calling the actor's mindset misogynistic', Dr Ranjana Kumari, director of Centre for Social Research remarks, "It is a totally irresponsible, insensitive and callous remark. In his pervious films too, he has been seen making jokes about a woman's body. This is not a matter of such light and frivolous comments that speak volumes about his mindset, which seems very misogynistic and sexist. This is violating the law of the land, and according to current sexual assault laws, such statements are considered illegal. He has hurt the sentiments of the women of this country and he should apologise. Being such a big celebrity followed by countless young men and women, one should be aware of what one is speaking in the public domain and this kind of statement coming from Salman is totally unacceptable."

Women's rights activist and secretary of the All India Progressive Women's Association (AIPWA) Kavita Krishnan feels that the debate should revolve around the systematic ideological misogyny prevalent in society, and not one particular actor. She elaborates, "Of course, his statement trivialises rape but the debate should not be about Salman Khan alone. The fact is that he has made this kind of statement precisely because it is common to make such jokes and rape analogies are extremely common in India and all over the world. Our colleagues do it, our classmates do it...we need to resolve to speak out whether it happens in films like 3 Idiots, in colleges and workplaces, if a stand-up comedian cracks them or a celebrity like Salman Khan. Haven't many of us smirked when our colleagues or batchmates mentioned being raped' in an interview or a cricket team being raped' in a game? Why have we never stood up against such comments? There was never this kind of a backlash, for instance, when a balatkar (rape) joke was cracked in 3 Idiots. It should not be against just one Salman Khan doing it because it is easy to say that he is always putting his foot in his mouth " that way the debate would just revolve around him! One should look at a broader perspective instead."

how can anyone not get that people are allowed to judge him as an actor?

he is an actor by profession

you are allowed to admire someone's artistic work. they can be a douchebag, but if you have the ability to judge their work on its own without being emotional about their douchebag status, then you should have the freedom to do that without others pouncing on you and questioning your morals and your character.

there are a lot of people in this world with skeletons in their closet, but people can judge them for their work strictly and are allowed to like them for their work.

you look at him from a moral standpoint focusing only on his cases
others focus on him as an actor
