SRK beats Tom Cruise

By: Tushar Joshi
November 13, 2007

The Om Shanti Om defeats Lions for Lambs at the UK box-office

The two are superstars in their respective countries. Recently, Shah Rukh Khan and Tom Cruise clashed over garnering eyeballs for their releases Om Shanti Om (for SRK), and Lions for Lambs (for Cruise).

Trade reports indicate that OSO did 323672 business with 52 prints while Lions for Lambs took in 457348 with 404 prints, both in two days. The UK collections indicated that Saawariya did 105848 on the same weekend.

We spoke to trade experts who revealed the reasons why OSO fared better than the Tom Cruise starrer, and why it would emerge as the biggest box-office earner of 2007.

Indu Mirani

I have a feeling OSO will emerge as the blockbuster of the year. The fact that it has done better than a Tom Cruise film says a lot about how not just the NRI audience, but the locals as well have taken to the project. I also think that OSO will go down in history as one of Shah Rukh's biggest hits of all time. With no big competition coming its way, it will easily break box-office records.

Also with the audience rejecting Bhansali's Saawariya outright, the viewers are left with hardly any choice. I think the reason why OSO has fared so well is because it's a bright, festive, entertaining film. It isn't a no-brainer with some gags filled in to make the audience laugh. Farah has made a hardcore paisa-vasool movie that keeps you charmed for over two hours. Both OSO and Saawariya are based around fantasy worlds, but their presentation and technique are poles apart.

Amod Mehra

Om Shanti Om will easily emerge as the biggest hit of 2007. The film has immense recall value, and people are going back to watch it a second time. At the domestic box-office, the film has emerged as a clear-cut winner. OSO has no competition of any kind. What's worked for OSO is the paisa-vasool treatment. Also, in lot of single-screen theatres, the public love the Deewangi track featuring all the Bollywood actors. With no big film releasing in the coming weeks, OSO will be in huge demand. As for Shah Rukh, this may easily emerge as the fourth biggest hit of his career after DDLJ, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kal Ho Na Ho.

Taran Adarsh

Om Shanti Om is the second biggest opening of all time for a film in UK. It's got a fantastic initial worldwide and is on its way to becoming one of the biggest hits of 2007. The reason why the audience is loving OSO is because it's a complete masala film. On the other hand, Saawariya isn't for the masses, its too dark and depressing. With no major release in the near future, OSO will have a field day raking in all the moolah.

Om Shanti Om v Saawariya:One horse race-13/11/07 10.00 IST

The diwali battle of the biggies has turned out to be a one horse race with Om Shanti Om emerging a clear winner. On Monday the collections of Saawariya had fallen to the 35-50% mark while Om Shanti Om was rock steady at 80-90% which is extraordinary for Monday in the multiplex era.

Our source at Eros says "Om Shanti Om is the fastest money spinner ever and in time will emerge the highest grossing film in Indian film history. It has taken the domestic boxoffice to another level. In India our film has done nett business of over 25 crore in 4 days and we expect it to touch the business of our 2007 blockbuster Partner within two weeks. Wherever we have sold the film it has fetched record prices and these prices will be recovered in one week flat. We expected the film to do very well but the collections till date are way above expectations especially if we take into account the competition".

The story is different for Saawariya, after three good days the collections fell apart from Monday. But due to healthy weekend there is still chance of recovery as long as the multiplexes do not drop the screens showing it heavily in its second week.

CBO- Diwali weekend (Nov 8 to 11)

Moviebuzz |

Diwali in Tamil Nadu comes a day before it is celebrated in North India. So the Tamil releases, six of them released on Thursday November 8, while two Hindi releases had the normal three day weekend. Vijay's Azhagiya Tamil Magan, clearly leads the Diwali pack as it took a fantastic opening in seven Chennai screens with a total capacity of approximately 4500 seats per show, due to the stars terrific pull at the box-office. It is clearly the number one at CBO, though it carries mixed reports.

As expected the number two is Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om, it's three day opening is a fantastic 96 percent in five Chennai screens including Mayajaal ( taken by the trade as a part of Chennai city for Hindi films). OSO has been declared a hit by the trade and King Khan has reiterated his position as the 'numero uno' non- Tamil hero in Chennai city.

In the third position is the Hari directed Surya masala entertainer Vel, which opened in eight screens, most of them small screens (Seasons, Inox, Suriyan, Chandran). The film caters to the family audience, which means by next week it will move further up the charts! In the fourth position is Dhanush's Vetrimaran directed Polladhavan, which also opened in seven huge screens, but due to good word of mouth picked up by day two. It is expected to be the sleeper hit of Diwali. In the fifth position is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya, after a super 100 percent opening on day one in six Chennai screens it collapsed by day two. The audiences found it to be a big bore that put them to sleep!

Film Cast Pluses Minuses Trade fact
