If channels and television actors are making pots of money on reality TV, it is also the best thing to happen to Bollywood celebrities. Not only does it enhance their brand value but also makes them richer by an average of about Rs. 70 lakhs in three months
eality shows are raining money and how. If television actors taking part in reality shows are paid anywhere between Rs. 2 to 4 lakhs per week, Bollywood celebrities who sit in as high profile jury members make anywhere between Rs. 4 to 12 lakhs per week, depending on their brand value, star status and popularity. Some settle for little less but no one really comes cheap, not even those who are sitting on the fence.
In fact, when shows of similar genres are telecast on two or three channels simultaneously - like it happened this year with Indian Idol, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Star Voice of India and is currently the case again with Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and Nach Baliye - price fluctuates with the demand. It hits the higher end as celebrities bargain hard for higher amounts. Though both sides try to stretch the rupee to the extremes, channels often give in to the demand to get the right celebrities because they not only lend star value and glamour to the show but also help bring in eyeballs which results in higher revenue.
While it might appear that the success or failure of a show depends entirely on the potential and popularity of the contestants, people in the reality TV business are of the view that judges also play a crucial role in the show's success. "If talent, popularity and the overall personality of contestants bring in eyeballs, the role that the jury plays also adds to the appeal and popularity of a show. If the participants are judged for their performances, the jury is also under scanner for its comments and impartiality," says a source in a production company that handles big reality shows, adding, "If getting the right mix of contestant is the key to the success of a show, so is true for the jury."
According to Vipul D. Shah, creative head of Optimystix which has produced quite a few reality shows and is currently making Jjhoom India, selection of jury is done on various parameters like the celebrity's stature, credibility, intelligence, articulation and capability to judge a show. "All celebrities do not make good judges. There could be a big celebrity that may not be articulate enough. Someone may be a good judge but he may not be able to express his thoughts. It is not easy to sit in the jury's seat. You got to deliver besides completing and enhancing the show's appeal," says Vipul. Agreed that it is a high pressure job and the jury has to be responsible enough while commenting and marking. But are they being paid more than what they deserve? Since the performance and elimination episodes are shot in one day, are they being overpaid for 13 days of work?
"One can argue either way. The celebrities may feel that it is justified but others may not," says a source in a leading channel which is currently airing a dance reality show. "In showbiz there are no parameters or benchmarks for working out the right compensation. From person to person, it fluctuates from the lowest to the highest range. To a lay person Rs. 70 lakh sounds ridiculously high amount but not for a celebrity." Elaborating further, the source says those celebrities who are sitting on the sidelines settle for less because a reality show is a good opportunity for them to come into some sort of limelight. "But the ones who are in the media glare and are busy will not settle for anything less than what they believe is the right compensation for them," adds the source.
Compensations are worked out either on a weekly basis or a flat fee for the entire show. While the weekly compensation for celebrities is anywhere between Rs. 4 to 12 lakhs - in some cases the higher range could be Rs. 15 lakhs as well - each celebrity jury member makes anywhere between Rs. 40 lakhs to about one crore in three months. Now let's take a look at the celebrity judges on various recent and current reality shows - Javed Akhtar, Udit Narayan, Annu Malik, Bappi Lahiri, Ismail Darbar, Himesh Reshammiya, Vishal- Shekhar, Sonu Nigam, Suresh Wadkar, Urmila Matondkar, Anandji, Shabana Azmi, Shiamak Davar, Jeetendra, Mahesh Bhatt, Ishaa Koppikar, Vaibhavi Merchant, David Dhawan, Adesh Srivastav, Jatin-Lalit, Alka Yagnik and Abhijeet.
A music director charges Rs. 2 to 3 lakhs per song which includes the studio cost and singer's fee. A singer gets paid anywhere between Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 30,000 for a song. It is anybody's guess what a lyricist gets for a song and choreographer is paid for five days of hard work.
An over the hill actor and retired music director have all the time in the world at their disposal. For a second-rung actress 24-hour day is bit too much. But when it comes to judging a reality show they all are busy mortals and big brands. And if channels are ready to shell out ridiculous amounts for the sake of having a Bollywood personality why would the so called film celebrities say no to Lakshmi.
